In-room safe on Carnival ships

Good morning!

I was reading on carnival's website that some of the safes open using a magnetic strip card.. Maybe I'm missing something, but this doesn't make any sense to me, it doesn't really seem as secure. Can anybody explain this to me? How does it stop anyone from using any random card to open it?

Thanks in advance!!

Erin

Erin, some safes you can set with a credit card strip. Once you set it only the person with your credit card can open it. It's like a secure combination but it uses the strip which is exclusive to your card(s) but only to your very own.

In the past when we've had this type of safe we've used something like a library card or room key from a hotel and kept it in a book like a book mark in "plain sight" the room so either of us could access the safe when we needed to.

I have a strong preference for the electronic combo safes.

Autocorrect responsible for most typos...

That's a great idea! Thanks :-)

I used the magnetic stripe on my driver's license. It was a minor hassle to have to carry two cards (didn't leave the DL hidden in the room).

One thing you DON'T want to do is use your Sail & Sign card. If your card is erased/damaged and has to be re-coded the new coding won't open the safe.

First sailing on CCL and has been years since our last cruise.

I vaguely remember using a magnetic card to open but certainly don't want to leave CC outside of safe.

We are on the Legend and I appreciate comments on whether the in-room safes use magnetic card, digital pad or both. Seems there is something new for me to be concerned about. If any digital card works, library card would be great

Thanks

We use an OLD Belk Department store card that isn't good anymore. It stays in my carry on bag when we're not cruising. We hide it somewhere in the cabin so you have to look for it, it never leaves the cabin. DO NOT USE YOUR SIGN 'N SAIL CARD! The safe is safe, the only other person who can open it is the head of security. Once we couldn't get our safe open so he came, got it open, we set the combo and he made sure we could open it.

Older ships still have the combination safes where you put in the combo.

When we did our cruise on Carnival, we were advised to NOT use your Sail-n-sign card. I used my drivers license card. I like the idea of using an old hotel room key or old gift card that no longer has $ on it. that way nothing gets erased from a card that is good.

Those Carnival safes WILL NOT accept your Carnival room-key-card.

The safe will scream at you, and you'll know you've done something wrong.

Bin there done that!:)

I use any other card in my wallet at the time.

Upon closing with said other-card, the safe reads and records all info on the mag stripe

and upon opening, it expects to read the identical info on that other-card.

Or it doesn't open! :)

The real reason to not use the S&S card is that if you lose it, the finder could get into your stateroom and also the safe.

We just sailed on the Triumph in Sept 13 and used our Sail & Sign cards for the safe. 4 hrs into the cruise, cabin next door lost her S & S card! Went to the desk, new card assigned, but had to wait in the room for nearly an hour for someone to come open safe. WASTED hour first day on vacation. Use another card.
