taking ones own drink on board

I really don't think alcohol on a cruise is that expensive! I went to the Mohegan Sun on Saturday with my dad to see a Dion concert. Wine was $10 a glass. Drinks began at $7/glass and went up from there. I've done many comparisons of the beer and wine prices on the NCL and posted them in this forum - they come in *cheap* compared to many restaurants.

Also, I really think that considering inflation, cruise prices have come DOWN since the 90s. Does anybody really believe cruise prices have risen outrageously since then? Can anybody post what they paid for a cruise in the 90s and we can compare?

In short I think cabin prices are steady if not down. I think alcohol prices are cheap compared to many casinos / resorts I've been to! I'm not exactly sure what people who complain about the prices are comparing the prices *to*. This is a "floating hotel" after all - not a "floating super-cheap vet hall" :)

I will let you know next week. Bar service is not promoted. It is handled as part of Passenger Courtesy. The Jewel Passenger Courtesy Coordinator was on vacation this week but returns on Monday. This is the same person that would set up space for a Cruise Critic Roll Call meeting.

If you don't have access to the 866 number posted. I would send an email requesting the set up to passengercourtesyjewel@ncl.com

Hello again everyone. Sorry to bang on about this but I took Shoreguy's advice and e-mailed customer courtesy to request a bar set up on the Jewel, but still no joy. This is what I got back:-

"NCL offer a Bar Set Up facility which is payable prior to joining your cruise or once onboard. Please see below for costing. This price includes a free drinks flask, and unlimitted refills on Sodas only (where specified).

$80.50 adults - 14 days

$34.50 teen pack - 20 sodas

$32.00 kids - 14 days

Unfortunately NCL do not allow passengers to pre-pay for alcoholic drinks which would be consumed by the bar or in the restaurant. However, champagnes and wines can be pre-purchased, which will be delivered to your cabin or whilst dining in particular restaurants."

I will be responding to the e-mail but I'm really getting a bit despondent and my cruise is less than 2 weeks away. I'm only after a bottle of gin and whiskey so we can sit on our balcony and have an apperitif before dinner and maybe the odd nightcap! Anyone else had any joy yet?

Not sure how it worked for them but we had three bottles and they knew there were three and asked for all three. I REALLY would have felt embarrased had I given them the top one and then had them say, "Uh what about the other two?" LOL

I knew they knew because our cabin number was written and next to it that theere were 3 bottles detected. And we DID try the one on top "trick" :(

Just a heads up

Here in the US, to order a set-up for your room dial 1-866-625-1159 and request an email confirmation of your order.

If the 866 code is not available, you may try emailing yperez@ncl.com ~ if she can't help you, she will direct you to the correct person. I have emailed her regarding Jewel questions. If she does accept your order, be sure to get an email confirmation and bring a copy on board with you.

As far as prepaying bar drinks (like the soda cards), I don't believe you can purchase prepaid drink cards on any of the NCL ships.

Wishing you a wonderful cruise!:)

Just had to tell you all that persistence pays off! I've just received confirmation from NCL UK stating that it IS possible to purchase gin/whiskey etc for consumption in your cabin. The customer support rep has sent me a list of gins and whiskeys available under the scheme along with an apology for the misunderstanding. Apparently only a few staff in NCL UK are actually aware of the scheme. Many thanks for all your help and advice.

Glad it worked out. It is a very well keep secret. If it were not for the cruise boards almost nobody would be aware of the option. It is in fact not a formal prgram but something made available as park of passenger courtesy.

It works out well for both sides. We can enjoy a cocktail in the cabin and NCL gets to make a little money providing a $9 duty free bottle of Vodka for $40. The last thing I want to do is carry a water bottle full of vodka halfway around the globe

The bottles of liquor are the full-liter size--we ended up bringing a bunch of it back home with us! Nuthin' wrong with that ... we actually think of our cruise everytime we have a drink from our "leftovers"! Worth every penny for that alone.

This is the sad truth that the company wants to earn more and more and more each year. You will be cruising more believe me and it will get worse and still wonder why?

isn't that what we call capitalism? it is a business, with a goal to make healthy profit increases year over year.

from my pov, it is still a great value; if it ever gets disproportionate, then i'll look to other types of vacations.

HUH???

If you want a raise/bonus every year does your boss have to raise his prices in order to facilitate your raise/bonus?

How can you retain your employees if you do not give them a raise/bonus????

Health insurance prices have skyrocketed in the past few years! Has the price of food/coffee/milk, etc., gone up?...It's called "cost-of-living"!

Should a cruise line absorb all of this???

Where would the profit be?? ~ no corporation can operate at a loss for too long! Hence - there would be NO corporations/cruise ships!

Cruise ships are a great value for your $$$ ~ relax and enjoy them!
