You can buy them ahead of time. Either call DCL or do it on the web site. You are charged for shore excursions when you take them, not in advance. The charge will be on your bill,at the end of the cruise.

To place money on your account in advance, you call DCL. This can be done in any amount at or above $25. If you don't spend it all, it will be refunded in the same form you paid it--credit card will go back to credit card, gift card will go back to gift card, etc. If you use a TA, they must make this call since it involves money.

Excursions will be charged to your account on the first or second day of the cruise.

When spending your account, DCL will first use any "free" money (OBC from DCL or from TAs, then use any gift cards you might have applied, then any cash, and finally bill your credit card. Your card will be billed when a set amount is reached. This amount varies with the length of the cruise. SO, your card can be billed multiple times during a long cruise....or even a short one depending on how much you spend.
