Cinderellie Posted November 10, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 10, 2013 Hello, cruisers. We are planning a honeymoon cruise in March and would love to try the 15 Day Hawaii trip from Los Angeles on the Star Princess. Anyone been on that ship and itinerary who is seasick prone? My fiance' has cruised before many years ago, but it was on a very short itinrary -- not near 10 days at sea like this one. Your honest feedback is appreciated. Thanks! Just Want to Cruise Posted November 10, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 10, 2013 We did a similar itinerary last December but I believe we were on the Sapphire. My husband and I are not prone to seasickness and didn't mind the rocking and rolling experience we had due to gale force winds on the trip back to Los Angeles. From what I have read, there can be quite a variety of weather conditions during the winter months.

We took a February cruise from Los Angeles to Hawaii on the Golden Princess which is the same class of ship as the Star. It was rough sailing on the first couple of days but we never got sea sick. The high winds made being on the open upper deck unpleasant and even had some areas closed off for safety reasons. We took another L.A. - Hawaii cruise in October and it was calm the whole way. Cruiserkenn Posted November 10, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 10, 2013 On this itinerary, you will probably have one or two rough days. Just be prepared with seasick pills, and take them when the captain warns of rough seas, and you will be OK. This is a great cruise! Don't miss it. Mr. Bubble Posted November 10, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 10, 2013 It is a wonderful cruise and don't miss it. That said, be prepared. My wife gets terribly seasick but has excellent luck using seasick patches. We had 15' seas from Hawaii heading to Ensenada and she did fine. Enjoy your cruise. Rare Cruise Raider Posted November 10, 2013 #6 Share Posted November 10, 2013 We've done this a couple of times -- yes, it has been particularly rough the 2 days going out and the last two days sailing back. There was one night that only 7 people were at the theater for the headliner show -- everyone commented they were in their room feeling very ill. I am actually prone to sea sickness and still love those cruises with all the sea days. Here is my list of tricks to help me be one of those 7 people at the theater: Green apples -- eat one when you are feeling nauseated -- maybe grab some and have them available in your room Chicken noodle soup and breadsticks -- they may make you some of this in the MDR if your stomach cannot handle much more Limit your liquids -- don't have too much liquid of any kind in your stomach Limit big meals -- only have big meals (if you have to) when the seas are calm or you are in port Go outside -- get outside and feel the fresh air going right into your face Go dancing -- it is amazing how when you are moving you don't really feel the motion of the ship moving Stay midship on a lower deck -- this is the area with the least movement Ginger tablets -- these naturally calm my stomach though some brands are pretty spicy; you can get them at the local drug store for about $5 a bottle Wrist bands -- some swear by these -- I am one of those that does; these come in elastic bands for anywhere from $5 to $15 a pair to electric ones for over a $100 a pair; this is based on acupressure so can wear them and still take meds or have a cocktail without negative consequences. They aren't particularly attractive but for me, work like a charm If all else fails, go lay down and close your eyes -- sea sickness is a balance issue between what your eyes see and what your ears are doing to keep you feeling well; if your eyes are closed, this shouldn't be an issue And catch it early because in the case of sea sickness, precautions to prevent getting sick is more than 99% of the battle. Once it starts -- argh!!
Love.II.Cruise Posted November 10, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 10, 2013 Hello, cruisers. My fiance' has cruised before many years ago, but it was on a very short itinrary -- not near 10 days at sea like this one. Your honest feedback is appreciated. Thanks! We traveled with family and friends on this cruise, but it was on Island Princess. We have 2 family members that are prone to sea sickness. They always brought some sort of sea sickness medication, but not sure what. I will admit that one of them left the dining room table in a hurry... he didn't make it to the bathroom in time and vomited in the dining room. He was really embarrassed and thought he could handle going to dinner. Be sure to bring a couple things for sea sickness, you may need to experiment with them on board until you figure out what works for you.
sassyredhat Posted November 10, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 10, 2013 We have taken 3 Hawaii cruises, and pretty much what the others have said. I sometimes have minor problems the first day over, and the first day back. I use the wristbands and 1/2 tablet of Bonine. The patch makes me very sleepy and thirsty, so if I use it, I cut in in half. I have never been sick on any of these cruises. Pat
morriscats Posted November 11, 2013 #9 Share Posted November 11, 2013 This was the only itinery DH and I experienced being seasick - and it is also our favorite. We now take Bonnie the first couple of days and are fine after that. The crew told us about the green apples.
Astro Flyer Posted November 11, 2013 #10 Share Posted November 11, 2013 (edited) Hello, cruisers. My fiance' has cruised before many years ago, but it was on a very short itinrary -- not near 10 days at sea like this one. Your honest feedback is appreciated. Thanks! My wife is VERY prone to all types of motion sickness & has enjoyed dozens of cruises including the Hawaii roundtrip several times. :) She has tried all types of preventative measures & while treatment will vary for each traveler, the generic form of Bonine (meclizine; penny's per tablet OTC) works best for her with the fewest side affects. It's an antihistamine with the only side affect she rarely experiences being a slight sleepiness. She's able to drink wine without excessive sleepiness to fully enjoy cruises...including near hurricane force winds & 25' seas in the Tasman Sea. Like all medications, check with a doctor and/or pharmacist for professional recommendations based on your health & any meds you're taking. RNGALNG Posted November 11, 2013 #11 Share Posted November 11, 2013 We did the Hawaii trip this New Years on the Sapphire. The captain said he had never had such a rocky passing - both ways! So, it really does vary due to weather conditions. On my first ever cruise, I used the wrist bands. For the next two cruises, I brought along the patches but never used them. I now find the rocky seas wonderful! I would bring the bands, some tablets that you can get and even some of the patches. (Insurance covered the cost of the second two items listed) I have also heard about ginger being helpful. You can buy candies with ginger in them, the ship does sell ginger ale and a ginger tea in the International Cafe. And if all else fails, the ships medical center can help you out too! But, do not pass up this cruise. It is wonderful! What a wonderful way to honeymoon! Be sure to sign up for the 'not so newlywed show!' They take 3 couples (one newly wed, one married about 20 years and the third about 50 years) and ask them questions like on the real show. If you get selected, you will be given free champagne while doing the show and a bottle to take back to your cabin as well! Enjoy your trip!
