Does anyone know of a cruiseline that does a northbound (or southbound) trip from San Francisco to Whittier or Seward? We would love to do a land portion at the end (or beginning) of a cruise- and would equally love to cruise out of SF- avoiding a flight one way!

thanks for any info!

of the major cruise lines only Princess departs from SF for Alaska and it is a roundtrip that takes around 11 days.

The only other thing I can think of would be a re-positioning cruise at the beginning of the season - but that would be LA to Vancouver and then one way to AK - again it depends on exactly how the lines handle getting their ships to AK for the season.

None of them do a one way out of SF, its a violation of the PVSA. The only one ways have to go to/from Vancouver to satisfy the PVSA.

The PVSA does not allow a non US flagged ship to transport passengers between two US cities without stopping at a far distant port. Canada does not count as a far distant port, hence the round trips will make the stop in Victoria (didn't anyone really wonder why they bothered with the stop since its always the last night and you don't get there until 6:00), and the one ways travel between the US and Canada.

You could probably do a LA to Vancouver on a ship and then switch ships and do a Vancouver to Whittier or Seward. You may or may not need to spend one night in Vancouver (not a bad thing by any means). This could only be done early in the season (mid-May) but a possibility.

Though, you would want to time your trip to Denali after June 1st.

Just a possibility.

Can't figure out why you would want to start an Alaska cruise from San Francisco. If the point of the cruise is to see Alaska, how much time do you waste cruising from San Francisco to the interesting and scenic bits?

In my opinion, it is even a waste to even start an AK cruise from Seattle.

Maybe because he lives in CA? One way airfare?

We did LA to Vancouver and then Vancouver to Whittier and back to Vancouver last year. Great trip! Saw some great cities on our way to Vancouver and then enjoyed Alaska for 2 weeks.
