Review- Breakaway 2 Night Cruise to Nowhere January 17-19 2014

Recommended Posts

There are already several reviews on this cruise but I wanted to quickly add my thoughts.

I booked this cruise for my mom and I since her birthday was on the 13th. We usually get suites but since this was a last minute decision and a short cruise we went with the balcony guarantee (and got cabin 14186).

The cabin- When we first walked into the cabin our first thoughts were that there was a musty odor to the room and the room was very small. The beds were separated but they were practically one since there was very little room between the two beds. I found the bed to be comfortable since it was firm and that's my preference but the pillows were lumpy and too soft for me so I didn't sleep very well during the cruise. I thought the bathroom was a good size but the shower had very little water pressure which neither my mom nor I liked. Also, I like using a washcloth and a bar of soap, and there is only liquid shower gel which didn't lather very well with the washcloth so if you prefer using a washcloth I would bring a cheap bar of soap, or bring a shower pouf to use with the shower gel. There was a beeping noise that we would hear only in the bathroom and I couldn't figure out what is was, so if anyone knows what that might have been please let me know!

The crew- Overall the crew was friendly but we did encounter a few who didn't seem to be as outgoing as we're used to seeing on NCL. We had a very nice server both nights for dinner at Savor but had a not so friendly one at the Manhattan Room for lunch on Saturday.

Entertainment- I booked us for the 7:00pm Rock of Ages show on embarkation day so I did end up missing sail away because we were at dinner before the show, which was disappointing but I did get to see the skyline from the restaurant. I would get to dinner before they open if you have a 7:00 reservation so you can be one of the first ones in; we did that and were able to finish dinner but had to skip dessert to make it to the show on time. I never saw the Rock of Ages musical or movie so this was a first for me. I thought it was a very good performance; some people didn't agree though because a good number of people did leave (for whatever reason). Yes, there was suggestive language and sexual gestures but the Freestyle Daily made this very clear so I don't see why people would be surprised by this. I also really enjoyed watching the Just Dance on the Wii in the atrium. We didn't attend any other entertainment options but it seemed like there was plenty to do. I didn't have too much luck in the casino but I did have some small wins at the Haunted House and The Lovely Outlaw machines.

Dining- I usually try to avoid the Garden Cafe but we did eat there a few times and overall the experience was good. We had to sit outside a few times because the inside tables were taken, but it wasn't so cold that it was unbearable. The food selection was good and I was glad that they had drink options other than iced tea and water. I made the mistake of not reading the description for the Caesar salad at dinner the first night because it came with huge anchovies (which I know are part of a traditional Caesar salad but they've never been on the ones I get on cruise ships), so if you don't like them just ask to have yours without them. I wanted to go to Carlo's Bake Shop but the lines were always long so I didn't get to try them out.

The ship- This was the largest ship we've been on to date and we definitely noticed that. It was very crowded in the public areas and elevator banks during dinner time and after a show let out. I really liked the decor and color scheme of the ship. Due to the cold weather I didn't get to the sports deck or ropes course. I'm sure during a longer cruise and one with better weather the ship wouldn't feel so crowded but that was something we definitely disliked. Overall I liked the ship and would like to experience it during a longer sailing.

Fellow passengers- I expected there to be a large number of young people there to party and there definitely were, but there was also a good number of older people and families with small children. I didn't encounter anyone who was rude or drunk, which I know is a concern for some people when booking a CTN.

Overall impressions- This was our first CTN and of course two days weren't enough to do and see everything. I liked the ship but feel that I need to go on a longer cruise to really get an idea of what she's really like. I was worried that the CTN would be too much of a party cruise but it really wasn't, and I would book one again (I'm not sure if my mom would though). There's nothing better than sailing out of NYC because not only can we take the bus there for a good price and the scenery is amazing, but I always get to do some shopping while I'm there :)

I did not keep the dailies but I'll try to answer any questions anyone might have. Thank you for reading!

Gatormom108 to the rescue! I usually keep them but my mom thought I didn't do that anymore so she threw them out. We were there to celebrate her birthday so I forgave her :)

Thanks soooooooooo much for this review!!!

I am going in 11 days, same 2 night CTN booked in 14150.

You had a spa stateroom correct? Did you ask them ahead of time to split the beds, or did they just do if before you arrived? I'm going with a friend for a girl weekend.

I like the idea of a quick little getaway close to home........I don't have HUGE expectations.......just want some chill time.

You're very welcome! We had a regular balcony, I think a BA, not the spa cabin unfortunately. The beds were already separated when we checked in; I'm not sure if that's the default setup or if they saw that we requested two beds when we made the reservation and set the beds up accordingly. If the bed isn't in your desired configuration when you check in you can mention it to your stateroom attendant and I'm sure they'd be able to fix it during turndown service.

I think this cruise would be great for girls getaway. I saw a lot of groups of girls and they all seemed to be having a blast. I've actually suggested to my sister that she get her girls together for one of these cruises because I know it would be perfect for them. I was talking to another cruiser friend of mine about the CTN and I think that as long as you go into them knowing that they're short, possibly very crowded and that you won't have time to do everything that you'll have a better experience, so I think you have the right idea :)

Hi Niya!!

We were with you on the Gem in 2010, a great cruise. ;)

Thanks for posting your review....very nice.

We were on the 12 night Breakaway cruise on 5 January. As soon as I met my steward on embarkation day, I requested bar soap.

He kept us supplied with those nice round Elemis cakes of soap throughout the cruise.....:)

I have done this on all my cruises, since they have replaced bar soap with the liquid soap. No problem.....

Hey stranger! My mom and I still talk about that cruise; not just because of the GV but also the great group we had, including you!

I wish we could have gone on a longer cruise but I'm not sure I can convince my mom to go on the Breakaway/Getaway unless the ship is sailing at half capacity. I didn't know you could request bar soap from the room steward, thank you for telling me that.

Do you have any upcoming cruises?

Yes...we still talk about that cruise too. We well remember your generosity and hospitality to all of us on our Cabin Crawl...;)

My mom was apprehensive about going on the Breakawy, too....but

she sure had a great time, and gushes about how much so, to all her friends and relatives.

Coming up this year, we are going on the Royal Princess to Canada/New England on 18 October for a week.

And then on 12 December, the Quantum of the Seas for an eight day to Florida and the Bahamas.

So within one years time, we will have sampled all three of New York's new megaships....:)

If a last-minute bargain comes up, we might do something in May, like a Bermuda cruise, but only if we get a really good deal.
