Viking China Tipping question

We are contemplating an 18-day Viking river cruise (11 days) and land tour. Our only other river cruise was last summer in Europe on Scenic, no tipping.

 

We've read Viking's gratuities guidelines, and are interested in knowing if those guidelines are generally followed, or if not, how you chose to tip.

 

I promise this is an innocent question and hope not to start a gratuitous gratuities argument! :)

When I went on the river cruise to China I tipped the recommended amount and gave Larry our guide extra as he was extremely helpful and fun. He spoke English as well as we did.

We tipped a little over the guide lines. They deserve the money for the quality of service.

Carol, I would have LOVED to have done that for both of us, but we have already been in contact with Viking (a few days ago) and have a quote.

We did Viking's Imperial Jewels of China Tour. Viking ship staff and tour escort more than exceeded our expectations so we tipped above the guidelines.
