2 Coronas, 2 beer lanyards - $1 Just back from Progresso

Recommended Posts

That's right. 2 Coronas and 2 lanyards to hold them around your neck for $1. Just head towards the beach from where the shuttle drops you off and keep an eye out for the Corona girls. I think Sol beer also had some kind of deal as I saw so many people walking around with cheap little Sol cowboy hats. Also, save a little time for the bar thats in the cruise terminal shopping area. The drink deals aren't as good, but they had a GREAT drum band and some dancers, and we made a wonderful party out of it.

We are also just back from Progresso/Merida. We enjoyed this port. We met up with a guy named "Tony" who took us to Merida, showed us around some of the historical areas where we took pictures. Some of the historic buildings were very pretty. Then we sat in an authentic Mexican restaurant and had great Margaritas and fresh guacamole!! He would escort us where-ever we wanted to go, shopping, sightseeing, etc. He was great and very helpful with the language barrier. He is originally from Progresso, but had lived in Denver, CO for four years. He spoke very good English. On our way back from Merida, we stopped in Progresso at his sister's restaurant across from the beach and had another Margarita before heading back to the ship. The beach was nice and it was a pleasant little town. This was the best Margaritas we had during our cruise.

Some of the passengers on our ship went to a resort where they paid $30 per person, which included all the alcoholic beverages and food for the day. They played volleyball, used the pool area and beach as well. Most everyone seemed to enjoy this less commercialized port of call.

Skylark

Sorry, but I don't know the name of the resort. The girl that told me about it said they met the guy while waiting to take a shuttle into Progressive from the ship. He charged them $25 for the transportation, drinks and food per person. Then they had to pay a $5 per person entrance fee. The pier is 6 miles long and there are free shuttles that will take you to the end of the pier. There is a nice beach and there are some small restaurants/bars across from the beach. You could probably ask around once you are off the ship. There are always someone there wanting you to take their excursion. Have a great time.

How did you find Tony, and do you remember the name of the restaurant? We had someone make guacamole at our table in Puerta Vallarta on our last cruise and would like to find a similar place nxt time.

Can I get a little more detail regarding this beach where there are $1 beers? From the ship, how do I get there? And is it a beach that kids 12 and 14 can hang out on???? I would love to try Mexican food there too but don't want to eat inside a restaurant.....are the ones you have all mentioned in this same area and outside dining? I would love some authentic chips and salsa. Thanks for any info.

Le Saint Bonnet is a very nice thatched roof restaurant with open walls. There are many ceiling fans. The food is fantastic. Best darn fish dinner I've ever had and you'll never find fresher. Staff was very nice. It's accross the street from the beach. The beach is about a 3 or 4 block walk from the plaza that the courtesy bus drops you.

We were in Progreso on July 20th while cruising on Carnival Elation...we took the city tour ($2.00) on a double decker bus...it was fun...we stopped outside a restaurant and ordered a couple of beers from the staff standing outside...they brought them up to the second deck of the bus...two beers-$3.00...we continued the tour and saw much of Progreso...we were taken back to the marketplace and we bought some very nice t-shirts for $5.00 each...we walked to a place called Barlovento...had a bunch of cruisers inside partying...had dos equis girls dancing...bought 4 Sol beers, a Sol tshirt, two Sol temp tatoos, and two lanyards for $4.00...partied there for a couple hours and then walked to the beach checking out the shops as we went...went to the beach and had a great time...never bothered by anyone and the waiters brought us beer and tequila while we were in the water...continued the party with a bunch of fellow Texans on the beach...Progreso was one of our favorite stops on any cruise we have taken...my 10th...so if anyone is wondering whether Progreso is worth seeing I would definitely say YES!!...I hope this helps all future cruisers to this port...Jake

how long does the "$2 city tour" last? the tour sounds like a lot of fun but i would also like to go by le saint bonnet for some nachos and definitely make it to the beach just to hang out. we are going to be in port from 7:30 - 3pm - is this enough time to do everything???

clemsoncruiser...the $2 city tour on the double decker bus lasts about 15-20 minutes...drives right by le saint bonnet which is on the street directly across from the beach...we used the beach just across the Malecon from le saint bonnet...we hung out in Barlovento at least two hours and got to use the beach for another two or three...730a-330p is plenty of time to do it all in Progreso...if you get the time find a poster named *hdawson* he is a nice man and emailed me pics of Progreso and Merida...he loves Merida and is a great ambassador for Progreso/Merida...has pics of le saint bonnet inside/out and the beach and many, many pics of Merida...hope this helps...Jake in Texas

Clemson. I'm not a fish eater either. Very rarely order it. However, the deep fried whole fish at Le Saint Bonnet was fantastic. Email me for a picture. Both taste and texture were different.

BTW many shrimp dishes are also available.

Hello hdawson,

I read in an earlier thread that you have some good pictures of Progresso. I'm cruising on the Elation in November and this is one port I know nothing about. Any info you have and would like to share would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

shaieberry

Good morning from Central Texas!! Has anyone found "Tony" the driver? Ya'll make it hard to decide whether to spend the day in Progresso con cerveza fria on the playa or explore the culture of Merida. I thought cruises were meant to relieve stress, not add to it :D Elation sailing 09/26/04
