legalwife Posted April 21, 2004 #1 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Alright I know I posted this before but no one answered. I did not put question mark in subject line and did not know how to correct so I am re-posting. Does anyone have an opinion? Maybe Clay???????? I know it has been tossed around, but has anyone done both and which did you like better? I understand you can get off Trolley but not Conch Train. Do we ride Conch and then after learning go walking on our own? Do we ride Trolley and just get off on own? Is there someone on Trolley telling us what we need to know? We are one of the short stays, I think it is only 7 am till 3 pm. We will be going in October. Just hubby and me. What do you think? Thanks for your ideas, as always. VaCruzers Posted April 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 21, 2004 This is a toss up depending on what you want to do. We have done both. If you want a good overview of Key West & then have time to do more aside from one of the stops for the trolley, then take the conch train as you can finish faster. If you think you want an overview of Key West and might like to spend more time at one or more of the areas it stops, then you might want to take the trolley getting off and on as you like. You can check the website for the map with the stops. If you are on the trolley you can take in things as you go without having to worry about returning to that area. I doubt this has been much help. I will say that on our next visit to Key West, which will be our first with our kids and first on a cruise, we will take the trolley so we can show them everything, but also stop and spend some time at Southernmost point, the lighthouse, Hemmingway's house, etc. Either way, you will not lose! Have fun. Debbie - not a local, but a 5 time visitor
Rare Clay Clayton Posted April 21, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 21, 2004 Debbie stated it succiently! Only thing that I could add is that the trolley is better in a rainstorm, as it is enclosed while the train is more open to the elements! legalwife Posted April 22, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted April 22, 2004 Thank you both very much. Well said and I understand completely. I am thinking trolley so we can get off and on if it is interesting to us. I will try to find website unless you can give me a link. Just wondering though, do they talk on the trolley as well telling you bits and pieces about things you see or is it all on your own? Thanks again. Rare Clay Clayton Posted April 24, 2004 #7 Share Posted April 24, 2004 They tell you about the history etc on both the train and the trolley. Of course you never know how much they might be making it up<G>
garnetjanet Posted May 8, 2004 #8 Share Posted May 8, 2004 When we were there last August, we took the Trolley but they never let us get on and off. Just thought you might like to know that. Don't know if it has changed or not. lyndasilk Posted May 19, 2004 #9 Share Posted May 19, 2004 We went on the Trolley in April and we weren't allowed to get on and off either. But the tour was great! We had a tour guide who was so funny and informative and he just made the entire tour a pleasure! We really enjoyed the tour; didn't realize Key West was so pretty with so many historical homes and lovely trees! It probably worked out better for us that we didn't get on or off because we didn't have too much time in Key West either. Our ship was leaving at 3pm and we were asked to be back on board by 1:30pm. The tour took an hour and we were back by the pier by 12pm. That left just enough time to do some shopping and browsing. legalwife Posted May 19, 2004 Author #10 Share Posted May 19, 2004 Thank you to all of you. The plot thickens though now that we can't get off the trolley. Was liking that idea. Will contemplate... VaCruzers Posted May 19, 2004 #11 Share Posted May 19, 2004 I've e-mailed the trolley company to get a final answer about whether you can get off & on or not. I'll post their reply. I, too, wanted to be able to disembark at will to spend some time at a few spots along the way. Hopefully, we'll get to the bottom of this. I'm not doubting the above posters, but my previous experience as well as the info on the website is that you can get off & on as you like. Maybe that has changed, but the website is not updated, or perhaps there was some circumstance that changed their policy for a while. Anyway, inquiring minds need to know as this affects our plans. VaCruzers Posted May 19, 2004 #12 Share Posted May 19, 2004 According to the trolley company, you may get on and off. Please see the email reply they sent me copied below. "Thanks so much for your interest in Historic Tours of America. Our trolleys do allow you to get on and off throughout the tour route. If you log onto www.historictours.com and choose the city of interest our website will allow you to view and/or print out information regarding our tours. 487 Posted May 20, 2004 #13 Share Posted May 20, 2004 What kind of distance is involved. Is it a easy walk from Mallory Square to the Southernmost Point? Is the trolley worth the $20 as compared to just walking up and back?
VaCruzers Posted May 21, 2004 #14 Share Posted May 21, 2004 The trolley tours the entire island pointing out many points of interest and history. You can walk from Mallory Square to Southernmost point if that's the only place you are interested in visiting. I would recommend comfortable shoes as it is probably a bit over a mile each way, but I am just guessing.

lyndasilk Posted May 26, 2004 #16 Share Posted May 26, 2004 Oh, teedee, that sheds a lot of light on the situation! We did book our trolley tour through the ship. I was under the impression that we would have the choice of the trolley or the train, and that the trolley would stop while the train would not. But as I mentioned, the trolley didn't stop either. I didn't understand why we didn't stop but enjoyed the tour so much, I didn't worry about it. Thanks for clearing that up!
