No announcements

First let me say that we LOVE the fact that there are no announcements on Celebrity hawking Bingo, etc., etc...BUT...occasionally they do make announcements (don't ask me about what because that is our problem)...when we are in our cabin, and we can hear the muffled PA outside, we run to the door and open it and we have missed whatever it is that they were saying. How do others deal with this? I know they would announce an Emergency IN the cabin, but if the usually blissful silence is interrupted, I assume it must be for a very good reason, and I would like to find out why. Do the rest of you just run to the door faster than we can?

If there's anything dire, you'll hear it in your cabin.

Other than that, you may have been hearing any of the following:

Each morning, you're advised when the ship has cleared local port customs, and they'll typically let you know which exit to take to get to the dock.

Another thing you might miss would be the position report at noon on at-sea days.

On some itineraries (in our experience, only Alaska), a whale sighting or similar is announced shipwide.

I have not personally verified this, but I would have thought that one of the the announcements could be heard on one of the TV channels in the stateroom. I know the ship narration during our Alaskan cruise could be heard on the TV.

as we had with Hurricane Lille on our Transatlantic last Sept. We had some amazing waves crashing up on 9............

When Iceland was cancelled & Spain put there it was announced, as was the weather near Iceland & getting to Iceland (25 ft waves & 95 mph winds).

Those announcements that you only hear in the hallways are of no great importance. We heard an announcement this past Feb on the Summit and it was the captain saying "Good Morning". I've heard other announcements on the P.A. where the captain was giving us the position of the ship and the depth of the ocean. As "Canderson" has already said, if there is a dire announcement you will hear it in your statement.

Actually, on our last 4 Celebrity cruises in the last year or so, there was a pretty extensive (5-7 minute) rundown of daily activities by the CD after the Captain spoke. Not to the extent of Carnival/NCL/et al., but definitely announcements (bingo, games, specials in the shops, etc.). The "no announcement policy" is now a "limited announcement policy."

I've heard some rumors to this effect over the last year, but on our April '05 Constellation trip, they were still sparing us this. What ship, and when did you last experience this?

Still .. I could live with that!

We had a new CD on our Infinity Panama Canal 2 years ago...he had come from either Carnival or NCL (or something similar) and he did an abbreviated version of the horrible announcements we sail X to get away from...I hope this does not become a trend...we did NOT like it at all. I don't remember his name, but I do recall it sort of rhymed with Jackie Gleason. Does anyone know if this is the new trend in CD's? I certainly hope not.

But anyway, I'm not going to bother going to the door anymore...does sound like we're not missing much.

Here you go:

Mercury, 2/04

Horizon, 4/04

Horizon, 9/04

Galaxy, 6/05

Only announcements were immediately after the Captain's position/weather update at noon. Perhaps it is the CD's decision as to have announcements or not?

Agree that this is a negative trend. On our last cruise, after the Captain spoke, the CD actually read the Daily to us. Seems a bit unnecessary to me, and is close to annoying.

Prefacing with the fact that we are big Celebrity fans with 3 cruises this year, but...

Probably even more annoying than the announcements that seem to be creeping into more and more Celebrity cruises is something we saw last month on the Galaxy. Embarkation day, on the pool deck, they had a big display of what they called their "revenue partners" (meaning these are the people who will be taking more of your money even though you have paid an insane amount for this European cruise). All of the big moneymakers (spa, casino, art auction, Celebrity @ Sea computer classes, the boutiques and shops, shore excursions) gathered in one place so the art auctioner could, at the top of his lungs, extol the virtues of all these "revenue partners". "We can save you 40% over land prices on art!" "Don't even think of going on your own in these ports, take an excursion" "Learn how to gamble from our professional casino staff" "BIG SAVINGS in our onboard shops, duty FREE!!" ad infinatum...

This went on for a good hour and a half at ear blasting volume (you would not want to be anywhere near the pool deck during this period). Louder than anything we have ever heard on a "lower class" cruise line.

Sorry, but this isn't close to the Celebrity we loved (or the Celebrity that so many posters on this board love to use to slam other cruise lines like Carnival and NCL).

Celebrity...are you listening?

Thanks for this post.

I do hope Celebrity is listening. The trend toward LOUD is getting worse aboard Celebrity. There are so many positive things about Celebrity; however, while I understand the revenue producing behaviour, the deafening mike systems are not working for me. On our last Galaxy cruise, we left the dining room on baked alaska night because the yelling into the mike CD was whipping the crowd into a frenzy...not a pretty picture on a "premium" line.
