We sailed Royal Carribean..but sticking to Carnival

Thank you for your balanced review.

I agree - I have sailed on Royal twice and it's a good cruise if the price is right (we sailed the explorer out of Bayonne and got a couple of very good deals) but I do prefer Carnival (though not their policy on accessible cabins - they really need to separate them out of their regular inventory).

For my dollar, Carnival offers me more entertainment. I don't do rock climbing or ice skating and don't find Quest all that much fun. On Carnival, it seemed to me that from 11am to 11pm, there was gnerally a choice of 2 or 3 things I wanted to do; I didn't find that on Royal. On Royal, there is one "big" entertainment in the evening instead of choices (Kareoke, comedy club, show, etc).

And I really like the placement of the Casino on Carnival - they put them where you get natural light, have space between the rows of machines (yes, I'm a slot junkie) and you can always seem to find a slot host or bar server. On Royal, I found the casino dark, tucked away, crowded with machines crammed together and if there was a problem with a machine, you had to wait forever for someone to come.

I'm with you on the location of the casinos on RCCL. They are on a separate deck from the Promenade and it does appear dark and cramped. It is almost like they placed there as an after thought.

OP I have no opinion either way. We have sailed on Carnival and probably will again is the price is right and the itinerary is calling us. But we do prefer Royal Caribbean because we are older, in our 60s, and they do carter towards the older crowd.

During our March 2nd cruise on The Navigator we were on Family Oceanview 9200 and I am curious as to which cabin you had as our bathroom toilet wasn't chipped.

As to people sitting on the helipad looking in while we were looking out all we did was wave, they waved back and then turned around and kept enjoying the view of the waves.

We found it no different than someone in a Promenade Cabin looking down on the Promenade while we just happen to be looking up and getting a glimpse of them.

I do give you credit for trying Royal Caribbean. This is much better than someone come here to Cruise Critic and bashing a cruise line based solely on something they read here. I want to tell them to give it a try and form their own opinions.

Ive been on two cruises, Caribbean Princess and RCCL Oasis of the Seas. I am booked on the Carnival Valor in 2 months (CANT WAIT!!). Here is my assessment....

Maybe it's just me and the way I am, but I didn't notice many differences other than the decoration and design of the ships. People on both were great, service was excellent (although I have a soft spot for two employees on the princess cruise, our room steward and the one waitress at the piano bar...they made our cruise). Enjoyed food on both cruises, however the specialty steak house on Princess was better than RCI. I cant wait to see how Carnival stacks up, but like I said, I am a pretty easy going person and it takes ALOT to get me out of my vacation mode haha.

I should say that activities vary which could sway opinions....flowrider, rockwall, slides ect.

I will leave everything with one thought....

During EVERY vacation, not matter if it is a cruise or land vacation, you will be faced with a less than perfect situation. It is how you handle those situations and let them or not let them effect you which will set the overall tone for your vacation. Don't fret the small things! Time away from work is too precious to waste them worrying about a waiter or another passenger who was rude to you. Just take that moment and realize that they are most likely having a miserable time....don't let their miserable time ruin your good time!

I simply am offering an outlook for those that might be interested in another point of view. I absolutely enjoyed by cruise…I still had a BLAST on Navigator of the Seas…there was nothing on that cruise that kept me from doing that…actually it never does…cruising is just fun!

I agree…rock climbing, ice skating, flow rider…those aren't activities for me or my kids. I think once my kids are older…they might be able to take advantage of all this and my point of view might change. With young kids…I guess you are paying for things that you won't use.

For the poster who is implying that I'm lying or making up a chipped toilet…I'm not sure why someone would make up such a story…but if it makes you feel better to know our cabin number it was 7500. Yes we did wave at the people below…however I did not pay for helicopter pad view…I paid for a true ocean view. For the people who booked those balcony cabins overlooking the promenade..well they paid for that view.

Totally agree about the casino…didn't realize all casinos were placed as such on Royal carribean. We like to gamble so the casino is important for us.

Last…I don't want anyone to think I didn't have fun…I'm stressing again…we have had a blast on EVERY cruise we have been on. I just know that I appreciate every detailed review on this site so I thought I would pay it forward :)))))

My GOD where did I say you were lying. I DID NOT SAY THAT. I asked what cabin you were so no one else would book that cabin and maybe consider booking the cabin we had.

Try and re-read my post and see if you can show me where I said you were lying so I won't do it again.

Thanks for your review. We are about to go on a Carnival cruise and will be going on RC with kids in June. It should be interesting to compare the two! We have been on RC before, but that was many years ago without kids.

hard to compare an older RCL ship with the other line's newest, but you did. Arrogance? How is that?

NOS just came out of a big dry dock. It has the flow rider now. I've been on both these ships, the NOS before the dry dock, and I'm going on it again this Sunday with my grandkids. I believe this was a fair review. New doesn't always mean best. My favorite ships are many of the older smaller ships in both lines. Arrogance? I don't understand that at all.

We have been on 37 cruises on 4 different cruise lines, with the majority of them on Carnival due to the closeness of the terminal. We just returned from a RC cruise (our 4th on them) and were thoroughly disappointed. Carnival surpasses RC in food, entertainment, and service. After 9PM on RC, the only food you can get is on the prominade deck with the same little sandwiches and pizza every night. The biggie for my family was no ice cream after 9pm unless you wanted to pay for Ben and Jerry's. Food in the dining room on Carnival is superior to RC, as well as on the Lido Deck. A big complaint of mine is there are no places to sit and converse at night unless you are in a lounge (where you can't hear each other) or in the small 24-hr cafe. As one other person mentioned, good luck getting a drink or food by the pool. Carnival has burgers, hot dogs, chicken strips, nachos, and pizza by the pool and bar servers continuously asking if they can help you. The entertainment was also better on Carnival as far as the production shows. If I was going on my honeymoon, Carnival would be my choice.

We've done Disney, royal and carnival.....to find a ship that meets the desires of every one in our family, carnival wins hands down. Disney is very loud. Children everywhere. Shrieks. All. The. Time. Love the classic designs of the Disney ships, and it's fun to look for hidden mickeys......but I don't want to cruise with them with out my own little shrieker :) We found the service to be lacking on RCCL, the food to be meh. I love the design of RCCL ships and the art everywhere. Carnival comes up third for us here. The review between the two lines are similar to what we have found. I would also say there is a bit of arrogance about RCCL, but i didn't see it on board. It's the cruisers that are in the ports, here on cruise critic, conversation around town at home. People somehow think that carnival is inferior. Carnival owns Cunard, princess, Hal. They have been around a long time. Clearly they are doing something right. I guess if you pay more for a cruise, you want to feel its better....to each their own. I like the serenity areas, my son the sports deck, my husband the casino. So for us, carnival fits the bill. It's sad that the OP can't post her opinion on what her experiences were for her family. Remember, each cruise, is different, with a different mix of passengers.....maybe she experienced arrogance. She says over and over she had fun. Her money, her experience. We are lucky enough to hear a different pov that might help us make a choice in our vacation.

I am in total agreement with you!! I loved my last cruise on the Freedom of the Seas, but I still preferred carnival. I am weird but 24 hr ice cream is AWESOME. I love going up on the pool deck and getting ice cream at 11 or 12 at night. And I didn't like having to go so far for a drink (didn't buy a drink package).

Now I am going to try something totally new and go on the MSC Divina in September. I hope I like it as much as Carnival but even if I don't I will still enjoy the cruise. It would take a major disaster for me to not enjoy any cruise!

DH and I are 38 with three boys (ages 5, 5, and 4). In the last 4 months we have sailed NCL Epic, Carnival Magic, and last week RC Navigator of the Seas.

Room: We had a family ocean view on carnival magic and RC. We had the family haven suite on NCL…which was fabulous and really can't compare with the other two so I won't. Our bathroom on RC did not get refurbished. The toilet was chipped in multiple areas and stained….ewwww. Our bathroom was dated and small. I was not impressed with RC. On Carnival magic we had two bathrooms and this is nice with 5 in a room. The room was larger on RC compared to Carnival. The storage would have been more efficient if RC would have added shelves to the closets. On RC our family OV overlooked the helicopter pad and beyond that we had an ocean view. We had two windows on RC..but we had to keep them closed for privacy as people could look in from the helicopter pads. Because of the bathroom situation for us…Carnival's room was better.

Windjammer Cafe: With 3 young children…buffets are always a nightmare. On RC having the drinks already poured was a nice touch. On carnival and RC we got offered help twice. On carnival a drink cart comes around and offers refills and pastries…that's a nice touch. Service was the same on both ships. Food options were better on carnival..but this is just personal preference. We though the food was tastier on carnival. NCL's service was lacking compared to the above two ships.

Activities: SAME…RC has the ice skating rink and rock climbing wall. Carnival has the sky course and rock climbing wall. NCL has the bowling alley and climbing structure for kids. SAME for all three

SHOWS: NCL had the best shows. RC got second place. Carnival third place.

Kids Club: We were in the young club (ages 3 to 5) on all three ships. Carnival wins. Carnival offered a structured schedule but allowed some leniency for the kids who might want to color or play with toys instead. RC was very strict…you had to participate in what they were doing…no other option. NCL had free play the first hour of all opening times…so three times a day you had 1 hour of free play. Carnival was open first cruise day. RC and NCL did not open until the second day of cruising. RC and NCL close from 12 to 2 and again from 5 to 7. If you leave your child in the club on a port day, NCL charges to feed your child. Carnival will give your child a mat, blanket, and pillow to sleep on. RC will leave your child on a bench (we witnessed this multiple times with other children). NCL will not allow your child to sleep in the club…you have to come get them. Our boys will be 6 next week and we have a 4 year old. RC offered to move our boys to the older group…but they also said once we move them they can't come back to this side…I thought that strict. Overall vibe: Carnival really gets it…they want your children to have a good time and they want them to come back..they will bribe them with candy and do whatever it takes…I didn't get this vibe from RC or NCL. CARNIVAL WINS!!!! Having said that…my kids had a blast in all three clubs.

Casino: We only play blackjack at the tables. RC opens their tables at 12 pm. We like to gamble but can only do this when the kids are in the club…but the club is closed from 12 to 2 so that was a schedule conflict for us. On the NCL epic we felt like we were gambling in a hallway…we just didn't like the lay out of this ship. Also the payouts are not as great on the NCL epic. NCL epic kept all but one table open for high rollers. RC and Carnival had two $6 tables. Smoke was the same on all ship casinos…I liked that Carnival had nonsmoking tables.

Main Dining: Taste is personal preference and relative. I will only say that the service was the same on all three ships. They all offered great ambiance in the main dining area.

Fog delay: On carnival we didn't get off the ship until 6pm and on RC we got at 1pm. Carnival handled the delay better. They kept service going as if we were still their guests. They even let us sleep in and told us to pretend it was a dream and we could keep our cabins. RC shut down completely! You had to vacate your room as normal. They had breakfast but that ended at 9. You could not find food on the ship. My young boys were getting hungry at 11:30 but there was no food to be found. I heard from another passenger that he had the drink package and they wouldn't even refill his cup with soda. I did hear that they had cookies in one of the lounges, but that's not enough. Shame on RC for this one! If felt like being kicked out the door…we have served you for the time you paid and now we are DONE! RC could have handled this better.

pool layout: On Royal carribean there was nothing by the main pool…only ice cream. If you wanted food you had to go inside the windjammer. On the magic they have a grill right by the pool…so you could get in line wet! Also the drink station wasn't too far in either. Also on RC…once windjammer closed…you had to go to deck 5 to get water…unless you go upto a bar I suppose. It's minor…but with three young kids…these little things matter.

Movie night: I liked that RC played Frozen and Smurfs on the big screen…they had a good variety of movies for all ages. Carnival gave us popcorn

Overall Vibe: RC is of arrogance, Carnival is more modest and fun, and NCL is somewhere in between.

Overall: There is no doubt that RC's decor is prettier..but that's not enough for me to pay more then other cruise lines. I didn't feel their service was any better to warrant the extra cost in sailing with them. In fact at times their service was lacking compared to carnival magic. With young kids carnival was best for us. Would I sail RC again? Maybe….is it worth the extra cost? NO! Having said that…I had a blast on all three…cruising is FUN!

__________

We sailed Disney in January And everyone in our Travel party kept saying how much better our few previous Carnival Cruises were? When we got of DCL my DH & DS asked me never to book another DCL cruise again!

Give RC another chance..but try the Allure or Oasis. Those 2 ships are top notch. Surprisingly enough our recently booked Allure Cruise worked out to be $600 cheaper then our Breeze cruise we were looking at for the same week..

Thanks for sharing your experience! I agree, carnival tends to offer the best deals- and that is hard to beat.

If you don't mind the question, what promoted you to take several cruises is such a short window of time?

  • 2 months later...

To the poster who is upset about RCI not allowing you to cancel a booking & rebook under a promo...

May I ask... Will an airline allow you a return a ticket so you can buy a new fare? Will a wireless phone or cable company give you a promo if you are an existing customer? NO. It's not unheard of... You're reaching.

Each line has it's strong points & it's weaker points. This is subjective & all depends on what's more important to you or your family's needs. I have over 20 cruises under my belt (must update my signature.) And yes, while I get many perks as a RCI Diamond member I am sailing on the CARNIVAL BREEZE in a mere 14 days & I CANT WAIT!!!

This time around it's a matter of price point, date, itinerary & ship. PLUS we felt like we didn't want to dress to the nines since we are flying. And for this... Carnival is most lenient -- Apparently khakis & a hawaiian shirt qualify as formal wear. If the rest of my party could travel one day earlier, we would have been on another ship. We know that either way -- We will enjoy ourselves.

I have also learned that you cannot base your entire decision on a line by just one ship or itinerary. Each ship has it's own persona & vibe. And something else to consider is WHAT PORT you're cruising from. Depending on where you cruise from will also dictate the crowd on board & that too can greatly affect your cruise. Have you ever sailed in Europe? Or from San Juan or the Dominican Republic? Even the difference between NY, Baltimore or Tampa. ALL VERY DIFFERENT!

Here's my 2 cents.

If I want to have FUN & be well taken care of: RCI hands down. Best mix of people: all age ranges & lots of activities. LOVE LOVE their ships, staff, decor & easy to navigate around the ships!

If I want to have fun, pay less & don't mind carefree parents & kids running everywhere: CARNIVAL. I LOVE not having to dress up, the lido buffet & tandoor station. Their ships are a little cluttered with narrow passageways & low ceilings but I always have fun!!

If I want to RELAX in style: CELEBRITY. Great food, excellent service, less activities, less kids, less announcements, but also much less nightlife. The best solariums & eggs Benedict station ever!

I have been on NCL didn't care for it in 2002 but that was when they first came out with freestyle dining. It was early in the concept & they've changed a lot since then. Would not be my first choice, but would not say no.

Also must try PRINCESS next. Hear they are most like RCI & apparently they have the best pizza on the seas. I am looking for a new ship & itinerary I like.

In the end......

ANY CRUISE is better than being in the office!

I love how people here quibble with a poster's point of view. It is really arrogant to think that somehow your point of view from 1, 10, 100, or 1000 cruises is somehow better or more enlightened than another poster's. It isn't about how you feel a poster should feel about their cruise; it is how they feel about their cruise.

I've been on (2) Carnival and (1) RC cruise... on my RC cruise, I spent a lot of money in the casino because the activities were very lackluster and not of interest to me. No offense to anyone on here, but everything seemed geared more towards an "older" crowd. The decor was 1000x nicer than Carnival, but the only decor I care about is the one in my house where I actually live.. when I'm on vacation I want to have fun and "be on vacation".

ITA, TexasRon! People have differences in opinions and experiences, which I find valuable as a person who loves to travel and stalks travel websites and reviews. So sad that people get upset when someone puts a crack in their rose-colored glasses instead of simply respecting their opinion.

After six cruises in 13 years on RCI, CCL and Disney, I have to say I had a lot of carefree fun on my 1st Carnival cruise because I appreciated the value and service for what I actually paid. I have paid RCI thousands for a cramped balcony room on the Explorer of the Seas 9-day out of Bayonne and that turned me off to cruising for 6 years. I used to say I would never cruise again after that cruise, and that was after having a gorgeous wedding on an RCI ship for my very first cruise. I'm well-traveled (grew up with a flight attendant mom) so I've been to many, many vacation destinations around the world. Cruising is addictive but IMO you have to find the right ship for you and your current lifestyle.

Disney doesn't do it for me because the shows and service just can't make up for overcooked and bland food. They even messed up the Krispy Kreme donuts! They were freezer burned and mushy. I had a great time in a lovely, spacious inside cabin on the newly-refurbished Magic. But I like to enjoy food on my vacations and Disney is subpar in that area. Won't pay lots of $$$ when I never look forward to my next meal. If I had little kids, I'd suck it up for them. Parents of kids under 13 should try this line at least once because it will create a lifetime memories for them.

RCI is inconsistent and extremely arrogant. I'd rather pay $$$ for Princess and Celebrity if I have to deal with snootiness from staff and guests. Their product is very comparable to CCL but is overpriced. I do want to go on Quantum, Oasis or Allure in the next few years but I won't expect great service or consistency unless I pay major $ for upgraded cabins. I'll expect to pay for WOW factor and that gets old after being on a ship for a week. I'd probably have the most fun on that kind of ship with a big group like I did for my wedding cruise.

Carnival pleasantly surprised me when I took a last-minute on the Dream. Their ports were great and I especially loved Mahogany Beach in Roatan. I hated RCI's Labadee island. Everything was nickel and dimed. I might as well do a land vacation if I have to pay for every little thing. Carnival seems to respect that some people don't want to add hundreds of dollars to expensive vacations on things that should be included. If I spend extra money, it will be on the spa, excursions and shopping. I just liked the more laid back and "fun" atmosphere. My kids are older teens and it worked for us. We are going on the Breeze in 3 weeks!

I don't take issue with her opinion. I'll do what works for us , period.

What is odd is when asked what is arrogant about an ENTIRE company her explanation was one person said sAid something-and let's be real? What was the tone! Was it a poorly times joke the OP didn't get?- and they wouldn't give her her own way in regard to rebooking.

Some would say THAT is arrogance

You'll love the Breeze.....we had a great time, but it's time for us to explore the Allure in September for our yearly anniversary cruise. But, no way would we go to Labadee. We chose the Eastern Caribbean, even though we've been to St. Thomas, St. Martin, and Nassau, a bunch of times. we're cruising for the ship this time. We got a really good deal with all of our gratituities paid for and a $50 OBC. We picked a nice Ocean View balcony and what's not to like? Enjoy your Breeze cruise and read my review with lots of pictures!

I'm sorry, did I hit a nerve or miss something here? I hope this was not intended about me. I did not mean to offend anyone. Not bashing anyone as I am an equal opportunity cruiser & just believe that everyone has their own budget, views, taste level & needs on vacation. Then again... that's what these forums are for. To share ideas & thoughts. If you're going to post something for all to see, you need to understand that people WILL comment on it! Not pointing any fingers.. Just a general statement here folks! LOL!

Like! Totally agree! It's nice of the OP to take the time to share her "personal" views. You don't have to like someone else's view. There's no reason to pick their views apart...it's just their opinion. Agree with it or not but don't be bashing someone for what is just their personal view they're sharing.

If she thinks someone was being arrogant...that's their opinion.

If she doesn't like a cruise line's policy regarding not being allowed to rebook at a better price that's their opinion.

The OP just gave a personal view of how the three different cruise lines stacked up IN THEIR OPINION, which they are entitled to. The OP specifically stated that they enjoyed all the cruises but felt, IN THIER OPINION, that they preferred Carnival. What's wrong with that...I have no idea.

Threads like these are so funny. The poster said 100 times that she enjoyed her cruise. But I get why she took issue with certain things. What stood out most for me is how the kid's club is described. That's a turnoff to someone like me with young kids. Don't care about chipped toilets or the casino location, but I find value in other parts of the review. Once you start comparing, some people will be offended regardless. Thanks for your take.
