CalCruzers Posted April 18, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 18, 2014 Hello! We are taking our first cruise "up north" from San Francisco to Vancouver on May 13th. We've always done warm weather cruises and are wondering what we might expect on this journey. Thanks so much! Peggy:)
dorisis Posted April 18, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 18, 2014 Be prepared for rain and it can be quite cool so layering works best for most.
wineforhealth Posted April 18, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 18, 2014 I've done a few of these and I would dress for Vancouver Weather. Each time in May we have had great mild weather but its is still coastal cruise in the Pacific.
TM Posted April 18, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 18, 2014 (edited) You most likely won't be laying out on the pool deck working on your tan. Edited April 18, 2014 by TM
Urban trekker Posted April 18, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 18, 2014 If you are on the Grand have you joined our roll call. You will sail about 200 miles offshore where there is usually a strong ocean breeze. Astoria's weather can be anything from rainy and cool to sunny and pleasant. Nanaimo is on the dry side of Vancouver Island and is generally drier and a little warmer than Vancouver Long range forecast is for below normal precip and above normal temps for the Pacific Northwest so as the others have posted layering will be the best option. Cheers! Dennis
AKman2495 Posted April 19, 2014 #6 Share Posted April 19, 2014 We sailed from Vancouver to LA in Sept of 2012. It was in the 60's on the way down, until we were somewhere south of San Francisco. I would expect about the same on the way north in May.
bigenna Posted April 19, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 19, 2014 (edited) Nice and sunny and dry in Vancouver today, about 12 degrees Celsius/54 Fahrenheit. Like others have said, dress in layers and don't forget your umbrella! Thrak Posted April 19, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 19, 2014 Whatever the weather we will be sharing it with you. :D I don't recall your name from the roll call. dad604 Posted April 19, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 19, 2014 (edited) Middle of May can vary between raining and under10c (45 F) to sunny and well over 21c (70 F) Temperature similar to Golden Gate park area of San Francisco but more chance of rain. capriccio Posted April 19, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 19, 2014 We did an LA to Vancouver cruise in mid May 2012. The weather was lovely except Santa Barbara where I wore my fleece jacket, gloves and a hat on a fantastic whale watching excursion (and wouldn't have needed the gloves and hat if we weren't on the water). During the days everywhere else, including Victoria and Vancouver, we didn't need fleece jackets - long sleeves were sufficient . It was glorious! We could see land of some kind for the majority of our northbound coastals.

We did not see land until I got up early on the day we arrived in LA.

cambio Posted April 21, 2014 #16 Share Posted April 21, 2014 We are thinking about this for next year. Is the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco usually calm this time of year?

No. You'll probably encounter rough seas from SF going North...
secretcastle Posted April 21, 2014 #18 Share Posted April 21, 2014 We did a coastal from LA to Vancouver a few years ago in mid May, and it was very smooth pretty much the entire time. :) guess we were lucky
CalCruzers Posted April 21, 2014 Author #19 Share Posted April 21, 2014 We will pray for smooth seas but wont complain at the price $30 a night on Lido with balcony. Last minute email deals. Peggy:):)
KPLIONMA Posted April 21, 2014 #20 Share Posted April 21, 2014 We are doing LA to Vancouver on May 3rd. Thanks for the reminder about the umbrella. We won't be packing too many shorts and probably won't be taking the swimsuit out of the luggage either. But who knows? We've been in pretty rough weather before even in the Caribbean. It's all part of cruising...:)
remydiva Posted April 22, 2014 #21 Share Posted April 22, 2014 Doing the coastal in May heading north CAN be anything from smooth to rough to VERY rough off the coast of Oregon. Always smoother doing it southward in the fall as you follow the currents so smoother in my experience . I have done the trip many times both ways. Better safe than sorry so pack some bonamine just in case.:o
