Smoking on your balcony is out! Gratuities are going up.

I would like to know for sure if this is truly a fact as we have a group of 11 cabins booked on nov.30th on the dream. a lot of us are smokers and booked balconies for that reason .i'll call tomorrow and see if I can talk to someone in the know. we may have to rethink our vacation.

I've never been able to figure out how smoke can linger on a balcony when the ship is traveling at 21 knots. I think a lot of non smokers are blowing smoke themselves.

 

I have had a couple of cabins that the balconies were totally useless because of the smokers next to us. Not an exaggeration at all. The smoke smell actually blew back into our cabin on occasion and you would think WE were smokers because the smell was so strong. We could not leave the door open or even sit out on the balcony because of the smell and the smoke. I just wondered how a person can smoke so much and still be alive. Also, on occasion, it was not just cigar and/or cigarette smoke that ran us back in the cabin (if you get my drift).

 

Since we only book balcony, I hope this is true and I can't wait for our November cruise to test it out.

It's true. The balcony smoking ban and increased gratuities begin October 9, 2014. I read it in a letter from Vicky Rey - Vice President, Guest Services.

I see no problem with smokers doing their thing with the e-cigs on the balconies... But I am sure someone will complain about that also.

 

As a non-smoker with a smoking spouse, it's definately gonna be harder to get hubby on a cruising vacation....

My guess is that Carnival has for the last year monitored Royal Caribbean's no smoking balcony policy. If there has been no long-term significant impact, then you can bet that Carnival will follow. And then NCL.

I agree. I quit smoking but DH still does. I would much rather have a smoke free casino and him smoking on the balcony.

Excuse my ignorance here is this rumor? Fact? Bored people posting? . I am a fairly experienced crusier. We always book balconies, suites in fact on every crusie line. We have recently only crusied NCL for the suite perks and the convenience of the NY Port. I just booked Carnival 4 days ago from San Juan for March 2015. I booked a GS balcony yes we smoke and now you are saying that someone is going to change that 4 days after I booked with Carnival and they had no knowledge??? . If people don't like smoke why book a balcony room?? I just spent $$$$ money on Airfare to San Juan and would liike To know if CCL is going to refund my airfare when I cancel this cruise if a new smoking policy goes into effect? They can increase DSC I have no problem with that the crew works to death. If this is true, this is not going to go over well with many many people.

 

When all of you book balcony rooms on Carnival you know that smoking is allowed so if you hate it don't book it. This will leave NCL as the only ship to allow smoking on balconies. Kevin Sheehan will be thrilled. and I will return to NCL gladly but I will be damned if I will be out $1600 airfare without a fight.

They'll spend the money to upgrade the ventilation systems in the casinos and ionize the air before they ban smoking there. It'll smell as fresh as just after a summer rain.

IMO, if they ban smoking on balconies you'll get the smokers congregating in the casino and cigar bar, the amount of smoke in those areas will increase by two or three times and permeate other areas of the ship. They'll end up with more complaints doing that than what they have now.

 

They will lose a certain percentage of presently booked and future cruisers as many smokers will take this personally. I myself would still cruise as the islands are what the draw is for me. My onboard spending however would be curtailed.

 

Balconies would no longer be a consideration for me because I'd spend less time in my room.

I smoke when I drink, therefore I'd spend less on alcohol.

The less I drink, the less I gamble and the less I'd spend in the fun shops and on photos.

All of that means less money comes out of my pockets and goes into Carnivals.

 

On the bright side though, they may have to cut rates to fill rooms.

When they implemented the No Smoking in rooms policy they gave more notice than this. They also gave everyone a 30 day time frame to cancel cruises and refund deposits even though booked Early Saver. Hopefully, they will do the right thing this time and do the same as there will be many canceling their cruises.

 

I would definitely fight them for your airfare as that was not the policy when you booked!

I think only about 20% of the population smokes so allocating half a ship doesn't make sense.

Casiino at Sea on NCL may differ with you on that. Smokers generate a lot of money on cruise ships

Taking it a step farther, they could even limit it to a couple upper decks on starboard side. Smokers are decreasing in numbers, so they're probably not looking at a huge number of cabins anyway.

Just received an e-mail from our TA. Starting in October, smoking will no longer be allowed on balconies:). Gratuities will also be raised to $12.00/day/person:(.

 

 

Hot damn, I hope it's true, because I'll book in a minute. Going the way of the other big time cruise liners who do not allow smoking on balconies. I knew it would happen eventually! Whining pays off....:D

Our local Indian casino went smoke free and it is more packed with people than ever. I certainly hope the balconys being smoke free is true. I think it's ridiculous for smokers to think its their right to smoke there with no consideration to the people in the balcony next door.

I want them to ban perfume. Perfumes have horrendously terrible health effects, especially when making them.
