Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Recommended Posts

I saw on Norwegian's FB page that NCL is no longer allowing smoking on the balcony? Is this true? I know there are a lot of internet rumors, so I just wanted to ask before assuming anything. NCL didn't post it, but a few different people did. Thank you!

Good possibility that formal announcement will be made tomorrow. That will have details.

Best, IMO, to avoid making too many comments about it since we don't have all the information.

As a Non-Smoker let me say that this is an awful policy and will entice me AWAY from NCL, not to it. What they're saying is the casino is open season for smoking. This will drive the non-smokers away from that spot for sure. I wouldn't be surprised to see it keep smokers away too given the amount of smoking that will be going on down there now. And what about the poor employees working down there?!

If they wanted to do something constructive they should have set the Casino as smoke free and allow smoking on one side of the open deck area.

If this was a new policy intended to appease the non-smoker, they sure didn't think it through.

The official word and the details of this policy are not even public yet. There are rumors that the smoking in the casino will be limited to certain sections of the casino and for active players only. We will just have to see what comes out from NCL tomorrow. Until then all details are pure speculation.

One can never have too many threads about smoking, no?

We are supposed to find out tomorrow if the rumor has truth to it or not. (About the 'new smoking policy', if there is one.)

You are absolutely right and tomorrow there will be more new threads with the same participants and most of all the lack of tolerance. A little humor would be preferred.

So if you have any good smoking jokes (pro or con) let's hear them:D

Maybe you have access to something the rest of us do not have. No policy has been announced.

How can people make statements about a policy they have not read?

Just amazing.

JOKE #001:

Cigarettes are like weasels. They are both perfectly harmless until you put them in your mouth and set fire to them!

But an excellent week to start sniffing glue!

I wonder if there is a corkage fee for glue?

Joke #004

My doctor told me that "1 out of 3 people who start smoking will eventually die."

The other two apparently become immortal.

If true, interesting that NCL changes their smoking policy just one week after Carnival.

Why do some freak out because there are 2 threads (or more) on the same topic. If it does not interest you then don't open it. If you are not interested then why do you waste your time in writing on everyone's thread " there is another thread on this."

Good luck policing that. For starters most of those casinos are so damn small having a non-smoking section is a farce. Secondly, how in heck will they police it? Buddy fires up a smoke while he is walking through the casino - > "Excuse me sir, only active players can smoke". The response? "Oh, I'm just going from that machine over there to this one over here so I'm active". A poorly thought out policy. For God's sake let them have a section of the open air deck. Any smoke up there is going to vanish like a fart in the breeze. Its only going to linger in the casino. I sure hope that this policy is re-thought.

I don't know why, but it amuses me to no end when people lose their ish over new policies, deeming them "unenforceable" and "horrible" and stopping just short of declaring them to be the end of the world as we know it... when the policies haven't even been announced yet.

People amuse me.

In a sad kinda way.

I have enjoyed the jokes from everyone, but just got off the phone with NCL and all balcony rooms are going to be non smoking as of November 1st. They also said they are changing the areas where you can smoke outside. I did have a reservation on the Getaway. I just called the regular number and they just got the information and were kind of shocked themselves.

I'm not sure whether these big companies realise how useful things like these forums are to them.

NCL will have wasted a lot of time making this decision (whatever it turns out to be). Top level management will have been involved in discussions. They will have experts who know the regulations in great detail. They have probably had the designers of the ship involved. They know a lot about the airflows in the internal areas. They will have demographic experts advising them on smoking rates, and what the effects of the change will have on future incomes, both in terms of bookings and onboard spend.

They will be using past comments from customers, and post cruise surveys. They have very likely done some research into peoples opinions.

All wasted I'm afraid.

All that time and money, they've made their decision and apparently will announce it today, but they needn't have done it, because there are some people on message boards, who have spent a couple of weeks onboard cruise ships who could just have told them what to do. :)

I agree and I am all for a smoke free casino primarily because it is an indoor venue which means it should be smoke free just like all the other indoor venues. Cigar bar excluded if there is one of course. But even that should be in a secluded spot with doors that open up to a secluded area of an open air secluded deck area
