Can you do the catacombs on your own?

If you are referring to one of the several catacombs along the Appian Way, it is very easy to get yourself there by public transportation, either from Rome or from Civitavecchia -- not clear to me if you're wanting to do this from the ship or from a pre- or post-cruise stay in Rome.

 

Be aware, though, that the catacombs have their own tour -- you can't just enter and walk around by yourself -- and they also have some odd closing days (and mid-day closures), so I'd be sure to check the official website for each before you head out there and end up disappointed.

Thanks for this info. I would never have known that they have mid- day closures. I will keep this in mind for my next trip.

Yes it is posted on the website. San Sebastián and San calixto are 2 popular catacombs and they close if different days and times

 

Priests give the tours and they keep certain schedules
