Another TA Question...lol

I have read a lot of the TA or not to TA threads, but had a few different questions...

Here is the situation. We are in the planning stages for 2015, and we would like to explore a few different vacation options - some land-based, some cruise-based. I would like to contact a TA and have them research a couple of these options and provide to me an estimated cost for each. For example, a family escorted tour in Europe, an AI in Caribbean, or a cruise (e.g., on Allure/Oasis). I can give the TA a rough timeframe of when we want to travel and a budget, but will they do all the work looking into each option?

I have started to do my own research, but it can be a bit overwelming as there are so many different options in each land-based area - the cruise is easy to do, but I thought maybe a TA would be able to narrow down resorts and land tours that are best for family with small child, check to see which of these may be offering best deals or have availability during our timeframe, and then figure our total price of the best option.

Is this a realistic expectation, or do TA's pretty much want you to do all the research yourself, and then just contact them to package everything up?

A good TA can put together a pricing list of options for you

You may not find an online agency that is willing to do this

Some may charge a fee which could be deducted off your booking if you choose to use them

Time is money

I would look for a store front full service agent in your area where you can go & give them a list of your personal expectations

YMMV others may not agree to paying for the service

or you can just do your own research & book direct

Thanks Lyn. I will plan to visit our local TA to discuss. I just wanted to set my expectations before I went in. I am not opposed to paying a fee up-front, but perhaps she can help me to narrow things down a bit. I wasn't sure if it would be easier for a TA to run these down for me or doing it myself...lol.

The first family trip we took we booked through the TA, and they saved us a lot by packaging everything up for us. We booked our cruise directly, and were quite happy with doing it that way. Our lady trip we booked air direct, rental car direct, and hotel direct, and wondered if we might have been better with package deal.

I have used online TA's and local ones too and have never been charged a fee except once many years ago when I was charged a mere $10.

I agree to consult with a local agent with your ideas and preferences (resort on the beach, etc) and let them sort it out for you and give you suggestions.

These days it is easy to DIY but some people will pick the TA's brains then book it themselves

Cheaper maybe less hassle for you ..yes

TA's prefer not to work for free :D

I take just the opposite approach. I enjoy doing the research and the wife and I make a choice. Then I contact a TA and tell them we are considering a trip and give them the particulars we want and a couple of dates that work for our calendar and ask them for a quote. If they cannot beat what I found myself (or offer extras I cannot get) I tell them it is out of our price range and book everything myself.
