Going on the Celebrity Solstice to Alaska in Aug.

First time on Celebrity. I have some questions:

We have open seating in the main dining room, do I still need to make a reservation, and can we opt to sit with other people?

What excursions are recommended?

What is the best viewing spot to see the glacier?

Any other information would be helpful. Thank you

Welcome to cruise critic, I am doing the same cruise on Aug. 29th.

With open seating you may or may not make reservations, choice is yours. If you do not, there could be a short wait.

I don't know what your interests are but we are doing the tour of the glacier from a small boat which get closer than the cruise ship. There are several threads on here with some good recommendations and there is also an Alaska board for other info.

We did this cruise earlier this year. Usually no need to reserve for Select unless you are very particular about what time you eat. 6 to 6.30 seemed to be busy but we usually eat at about 7.30 to 8 and rarely had to wait.

For tours I recommend a whale watching trip in Juneau. We picked a combined Mendenhall Glacier and whale watch. Did not book in advance just picked it up next to information centre. White Pass Railway at Skagway was great. We booked with Chilkoot Charters and had a small bus and a whole rail carriage to ourselves. We went up by bus and back by train. We loved this cruise. The ship is immaculate, the officers and crew friendly and helpful. You are in for a real treat.
