Ebola making a difference in your next cruise?

There is no "Ebola" scare on the ship. There is a complete overreaction from the Belize government. And the average American citizen.

 

She has not shown any signs at all of Ebola. You are not contagious unless symptoms arise. I'm so freaking sick of the fearmongering.

Lets not continue to feed the fear machine. If you consider all of the appropriately trained health care folks' date=' treating some very sick and contagious people on a daily basis to be a risk, then none of us would ever be able to travel.

There have been TWO Ebola cases born within the United States. Both directly related to immediate care of an Ebola patient who was flown here from western Africa.

 

This is not a disease that's running rampant. It's flu season, it's just going to get more out of control. You have a fever? Did you touch an Ebola patient or something that had their liquids? No? Then YOU DON'T HAVE EBOLA!

Just a quick update for you.

Late afternoon on Wednesday, October 15, we were made aware by the U.S. CDC of a guest sailing this week on board Carnival Magic who is a lab supervisor at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital. The CDC informed us that at no point in time has this individual had any direct contact with any infected patients nor has this guest exhibited any symptoms or signs of infection for 19 days since this guest was present in the lab with testing samples. We were not aware of this situation at the time this guest embarked the ship, and the CDC deemed this individual to be low risk and cleared to travel.

 

 

 

We continue to be in close contact with the CDC and our medical team continues to monitor the guest. The individual remains symptom free and is not contagious. The CDC has advised us the guests and crew on board are not at risk.

 

 

 

Due to a change in CDC monitoring procedures yesterday the CDC requested this guest be returned home from Belize. The U.S. government did make an attempt to arrange to fly the guest home from Belize yesterday, however, was unable to finalize arrangements with the Belize government. This resulted in our delay from departing from Belize last evening. At this time, the guest remains in isolation on board the ship and is not deemed to be a risk to any guests or crew.

It is important to reiterate that the individual has no symptoms and has been isolated in an extreme abundance of caution. We are in close contact with the CDC and presently it has been determined that the appropriate course of action is to simply keep the guest in isolation on board until we return to Galveston on Sunday.

 

 

 

Our plan is to arrive in Cozumel this morning at 10:00 am and depart this afternoon at 6:00pm.

From all I have heard, this woman has not been identified as being a nurse but rather a Lab Supervisor. She is said to have acted in the most responsible way. She is being praised for having self-quarantined herself and her husband and they, to date, show no signs of illness. The U.S. State Department is deciding if/how they will bring them home. They have three days remaining for their cruise.

 

Before we hang this person, let's get the story.

I would suspect yes as 'cover their A**.

 

Carnival has already issued a statement referencing the medical questionnaire all guests have to sign before boarding their ships. That might be a sign as to their thinking.

 

What good is the questionnaire? Mr. Duncan answered No when asked about exposure to Ebola.

The "Today" show had the Carnival Magic passenger news as part of their headlines this morning.

 

The reports I have heard indicate the passenger is a female, a Lab Supervisor and has acted in responsible manner since learning of the ill nurses. She self-quarantined herself and her husband and they have not left their cabin since she learned she could be a potential victim or carrier of the disease. The U.S. State Department is deciding if/how to get them home. They are on day 19 (I think I heard that) and show no signs of illness.

How in depth are these questions going to get before they become too extensive to process and overly intrusive?

 

If you read the news reports, the cruise passenger would have had no reason to suspect she might, maybe, perhaps, could have been exposed. She is a lab supervisor, who may have been in the same lab at the time Patient Zero's fluids were there for testing.

There is no reason to believe that she came in contact with the patient, and no evidence that she handled his fluids. Other than a question about working at the same hospital, she would have answered questions honestly, and still not have raised concerns.

I agree with you both.

 

As much as many (most ?) of us here love cruising and traveling, there comes a point where going through airports, flying, answering cruise line health questions, dealing with Noro like viruses, respiratory illnesses some of us have suffered during/after cruising and flying, cut backs on the ships, Code Orange, lower crew levels ........ when does it become too onerous and just not worth it anymore?

I'm good with proper precautions, but I refuse to live a life of fear.

It was just announced on our local news that 3 people from PA were on the plane with the nurse who flew from Cleveland to Dallas. All 3 are self quarantining themselves for 21 days in the Dallas area. The names of the people were not given nor where they are from.

Two of our hospitals here in Pittsburgh are now prepping for Ebola. Reason being that we are close to Akron where the one nurse came to from flying into Cleveland.

 

Presently 2 elementary schools were shut down in Ohio starting on Wednesday and hopefully they will reopen on Monday.

 

Shouldn't they have been prepared before this? :confused:

Well, if they stayed 3 feet away from her they should be fine. Again, notice that Duncan's family has not come down with ebola and they were confined in a small space with a man sick enough to try for hospitalization twice. He was admitted second time round.

Will be interesting to see what, if anything, Carnival might do as compensation for the several missed ports. This was clearly not Carnival's fault, and at one level seems akin to missing ports due to unfavorable weather, where typically only port charges are refunded. On the other hand, this is an extraordinary situation that is also highly visible, and Carnival is in the position of setting a precedent.
