sail7seas Posted November 11, 2014 #27 Share Posted November 11, 2014 (edited) Topsham..... anyone? Does anyone know if Disney actually has a sensible horn for use in fog and signal to other ships etc? Can they turn off their ridiculous tunes and sound a 'real' horn? I've wondered about that every time I've heard that silliness. Edited November 11, 2014 by sail7seas

I've wondered about that every time I've heard that silliness. One would think that would be manadatory equipment. The ship has to be able to make a distress call. When I sailed on a Windjammer, they would play a recording of Amazing Grace every time we set sail from a port. I liken that to Disney's horn, playing a Disney theme as it bids farewell. Oceanwench Posted November 11, 2014 #29 Share Posted November 11, 2014 Just found out: Princess does have a "regular" horn so won't always be tooting The Love Boat theme.
freestyling Posted November 11, 2014 #30 Share Posted November 11, 2014 I prefer the traditional horn for all HAL ships. I also love the horn display by the Westerdam. Especially when I'm lucky enough to be on my verandah enjoying it live.
InTheWASide Posted November 11, 2014 #31 Share Posted November 11, 2014 (edited) Absolutely not... was also considering replying with "HAL no!!" ... you can substitute a word where you feel it applies :) Edited November 11, 2014 by InTheWASide

Hidden Minnie Posted November 11, 2014 #33 Share Posted November 11, 2014 Disney does, indeed have a regular horn. It is sounded at the muster drill. I like Disney's horn, but the melodies are a part of the Disney experience and something we expect as part of the overall cruise atmosphere when sailing DCL. I also appreciate the traditional and lovely ship's horn of the other lines, and would not like to hear current pop music bleating out.

Folk Singer Posted November 11, 2014 #35 Share Posted November 11, 2014 At the suggestion of another poster, I am starting this thread. Royal Princess and Regal Princess both have horns that can play a signature melodic tune: the opening notes of the Love Boat Theme. Lovely to hear and very nostalgic for those of us who were/are Love Boat TV fans! Why not have HAL's newbuild also have a signature melodic tune that could be played on the ship's horn? Suggestions have been made of Christoper Croft's "Sailaway" and Enya's "Sail Away (Orinoco Flow)". Since the ship's name is a reference to the new King of the Netherlands, perhaps the opening notes of the National Anthem of the Netherlands? What do you think? Love Boat Theme. ;)
rkacruiser Posted November 11, 2014 Author #36 Share Posted November 11, 2014 You would probably prefer Christopher Cross's song "Sailing". Yes, that is the artist and the song that I was thinking of. Thanks for updating my memory!
jtl513 Posted November 11, 2014 #37 Share Posted November 11, 2014 Perhaps that makes me juvenile, but it is quite beautiful when the Westerdam does it. Remember "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" ... and we apparently have very different eyes! :):)
mountainmare Posted November 11, 2014 #38 Share Posted November 11, 2014 It would have to be "Edge of the Ocean" from the old HAL ads if anything....but I like the regular toots.

Rare foodsvcmgr Posted November 12, 2014 #40 Share Posted November 12, 2014 Instead of music, I believe one of the classic steam whistles from the original NIEUW AMSTERDAM of 1938 is floating around somewhere. It was offered to HAL for the current NA, but apparently they balked for some reason, maybe cost? Could be set up to run on compressed air like the steam tyfon horns on QUEEN MARY 2. Rare Murray's Pop Posted November 12, 2014 #41 Share Posted November 12, 2014 I say no, but only because there is no "tune" associated with HAL. Love the Disney and Princess horns.
serendipity1499 Posted November 12, 2014 #42 Share Posted November 12, 2014 Should the M.S. Konningsdam have a signature melodic horn? I certainly hope not!:eek:
