Amatique Bay -- best way to get there

Hello all! I'm starting to look at options for what to do while in Santo Tomas, Guatemala in February 2015. The search results for Amatique Bay on CC are nearly 8 years old, so I'm wondering if anyone has been there recently.

 

My main question is whether it's possible to just take a cab there in order to spend the day enjoying their facilities or if a cruise ship excursion is the only way to go.

 

Can anyone lend some insight?
