MIAMI - Carnival Cruise Lines said Wednesday the federal government has asked whether its cruise ships could be used as emergency shelters or help Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in some other way.

The world's largest cruise line said that although "to undertake such an endeavor would involve many complicated issues, we are actively taking a look at it."

Carnival operates 21 ships, each of which holds anywhere from about 1,500 to 3,000 passengers.

"It is our intention to work with federal officials to determine the feasibility of moving a ship into the area if that is their desire," the company said.

Carnival is owned by Miami, Fla.-based Carnival Corp.

It would likely be Holiday as she is sitting around anyway and to cancel any other cruises would impact less people then if a larger ship was used.

An interesting question is what facilities would be avalible for those onboard. Certinally the staterooms would be utilized but what about the bars/lounges and food service? I also wonder how security would be handled and if they do allow people to come and go as they please, would that make issuing them IDs or Sail and Sign cards neccessary? If this does come to pass the logistics of it would be quite interesting.

It would be basically a shell, they would have food service, but not the chef's they have now... FEMA and the Red Cross would basically take over like they do for shelters and camps... I doubt FEMA would pay for the employees to stay, they would have their own people and Red Cross to take care of things... it wouldn't be luxury that is for sure.
