With so much wine imbibed at one-sitting that, to bring my total alcohol consumption for the year within recommended limits, I ought to abstain until September; and unsteady on my feet but undeterred, I meandered with irrepressible determination towards my chosen viewing position, The Waterfront on Deck 8 outside Cagney’s. As I had hoped, it was not too busy to find a spot right-beside the railing from where a reasonable view of the firework display was possible. Actually, up top would have been better because the overhang from the pool deck partially blocked part of the view at times, as can be seen in the last photo...

It was a pretty clear night, with the moon and stars clearly visible. I didn’t have high hopes of getting any decent snaps, as this would be my first-ever attempt to photograph fireworks since my interest in photography was ignited eighteen months ago. Considering my tipsiness, I am surprised I captured anything...

Bear in mind that the viewing experience on the ship is more-distant than some of these close-up photographs would suggest; so the impact is not quite what you might imagine. The show lasts around 10 minutes, I guess, and is worth a look at least once. Did it justify missing the post-prandial liqueurs in The Haven? Not sure that I thought so at the time, but with hindsight I hate to think of how I would have felt the next day had I accepted the generous offer to linger...

Next time - St Thomas where I went ashore and took the Skyride to take some photos; Legally Blonde in the Getaway Theatre and Dinner at Cagney’s...

Still loving your review megacruiser! For a first time fireworks picture taker I'd say you did good! (Much better than any I've ever taken) Since you watched them from Cagneys, is it pretty much true that you can see them from anywhere on the port side of the ship? Thanks!

This is an amazing review. We are on the Sun in about 3 weeks and just learning about the Viva Vino list is a little grace. But you are giving us all so much more - definitely following!

Do you remember how the smoking was on the Getaway? I sailed on the Breakaway in 2013, and I remember the smoke from the casino was not well-contained. I could smell it on the far side of the art gallery on some nights, and the atrium where Le Bistro was frequently intolerable for me. Since the Getaway is basically identical to the Breakaway, that's been the only thing holding me back from booking a room, since I'm really sensitive to the smell.

Please see post 292...

Hi Megacruiser, loving your review especially as we did the Breakaway in 2013, loved it that much we had to do the Getaway last year when we had such a fantastic time that we're going back to repeat the experience this September. :o

Love the photos and it's always interesting to get a fellow British opinion which is comparatively rare on these boards.

Hate your photos. ;) I wish I could take photos like that. I'm jealous.

Hi Tony,

Thanks so much for your very kind feedback. As regards the photos, I am most certainly learning by trial and error. Should have taken a course really. The main thing I find is focusing manually gives me better results; and for low light I avoid zoom lenses...

Warm regards

Dancing (ballroom) did you seen any??

Thanks for commenting and sharing with others.

I looked in to the Tropicana Room when professional dancers from Burn The Floor were putting on a display during dinner. That was all really...

Following your enjoyable review. Loved the Getaway last May, am going again this May, and feel as I am reliving my Getaway fun - plus seeing some new sights through your review. Nice to see the current dailies. Great job and Thank you! :D

Hello netchik,

Really appreciate your feedback, especially since you have already experienced the Getaway.

I will be excited to read your final review on it. Every review I have seen on it suggests it is good but not really worth the upgraded price. Both side dishes sound gross. I'm very excited to try Le Bistro though.

Thanks for your ongoing contribution and patience. :)

Marvelous review, Mega, both informative and entertaining. Thanks for the painstaking effort. I didn't think anything could pry me from the Jewel class, but you just might have convinced me to try this new class.

Thanks for sharing this. If you do take the plunge, as always best not to focus on the areas that are not quite as good but on the ways in which it is better, like more options of things to do and especially the wider choice and standard of entertainment...

Great review. Great photos. There must be 36 hours in each of your days LOL Do hope you will publish it all in one at the end. My DW will not have the patience to go through the whole thread.

Many thanks for the flattering remarks. I do understand the frustration of having to wade through lots of comments to get to the next part of the review. Maybe someday, when I have time, I will edit all my reviews and post them in their entirety, uninterrupted.

Some might say that I should have written the entire review first, then posted it when finished. The trouble is that the task then seems overwhelming and it would be all-too-easy to give up. In fact you will notice that some contributors who write their reviews a bit-at-a-time give up part-way through. I don't want that to happen...

I also know some folk reading this review will be irritated that I ask for people to let me know if they are following; and in fact I have been openly criticised on these boards for this. The reason is simple; when you spend hours day-after-day, sat at home alone, writing and editing photos; a "following" comment is just what you need to remind you that people are actually reading what is posted and find it interesting enough to keep following... I do hope this explanation will at least partially assuage those with any such vexation...

Megacruiser, thank you so much for your efforts, much appreciated! I also just binge-read your Epic review, since we will board her this Sunday. Will be my second time on this special ship, your review helped refresh a lot of good memories!

Hello Anna32,

Thanks for the feedback. Hope your second Epic cruise is as good as the first. I still maintain it has the best entertainment I have ever experienced.
