Disappointed with Captain's meet on May 18,2015 Carnival Inspiration

Recommended Posts

I was on Carnival Inspiration.

My cruise friends decided we meet the captain on the formal night.

When we got there, the attitude of the captain was really bad.

He would not Iook into our eyes when he shakes our hands.

It was like he had no mood to be there and that we are not important.

He was such a snob.

The friendliest guys were the directors in HR, and the doctor...

I guess he was upset at the low turnout...

Some Captains are more social that others and I doubt playing social host is one of their higher priorities. I would expect HR people and Doctors to be more outgoing since they have to deal with all sorts of people on a daily basis.

This.

Ship captains are people who love the sea and love to sail. Attending parties and PR aren't necessarily high on their list of "likes".

Now if the CD or people at guest services were as you described, that would be a problem.

The captain should not even have to do a dog and pony show ,to impress the guest . He is doing his job ,getting the ship to the ports you paid to go to .

I would be just as happy meeting the cook ,or laundry person , Each is as important in doing his/her job as the captain .I really have no need to meet any of them .

Please keep in mind that not all captains are 'sociable' people nor should we expect them to be. To ME - their responsibility doesn't lie in entertaining us but in making sure that we have a safe cruise. Please give the captain a break. You made it home safely and hopefully had a wonderful trip!

How awful! If the Captain had been nonchalant about meeting ME, I would have made a beeline for Guest Services to demand compensation for the affront.

I hope no one ever sails the Inspiration helmed by such a impersonal Captain!

LOL. My thoughts, exactly. Is there nothing too trivial that there isn't someone who will come here to complain about it?

I'd rather have a captain like that than a Mr Charming who preferred socializing to being Master of the Vessel. I'm sure the former Captain of Costa Concordia is a very charming, warm, friendly fellow. :p

Yes. Can you imagine how many boring people the Captain has to endure each cruise? There has to be many things with higher priorities that are on the Captain's mind.

Maybe you and OP should invite the captain over for a delightful and sophisticated candlelight supper. Seat him between the major and the admiral so he can learn how to properly socialize from other military men. Then the vicar, Richard and Elizabeth can help lead off a rousing round of sea shanties. It will be the social event of the year, and all the neighbors will be green with envy!

No wonder he is the captain of that rust bucket Carnival Imagination...

Yep, as noted above, he's probably all BUMMED and EMBARRASSED about being aboard the wrong ship! He's the captain of the Imagination, and here he is, at the "dog and pony show" for passengers of the Inspiration. Guess he turned the wrong way on the pier? (I HATE when that happens!)

Candlelight supper or soiree, Mrs Buckett - oops, I mean Boquet...

Loved that show....

Quite possibly he was worried about the weather and currents in the Channel. The Channel's nasty at any time and worse when a storm is brewing, as it was on Tuesday.

He may have other things on his mind but if it's part of his job then he should be there with bells on. We all have things we don't like to do at work. Or at least I do. That doesn't mean I can be rude or dismissive to the customers.

On another note. I have never met a captain nor do I have a desire to so all our captains could have been that way.

On the comment about the captain being unhappy because he was the captain of a 'rust' bucket.

A lot of people with his experience would kill for that job. Being the captain of a cruise ship ,especially the mid sized and up, is a goal for a lot of folk in the industry. Having been to Italy several times I can comment that while I have met many friendly and hospitable Italians I have also been on the receiving end of curt and cold customer service...more so than any other European country.

Our recent Captain on the Legend was wonderful, very present and smiley and would greet people if they said hello and his family joined him on board as well. Theres a photo of me with him on captain's night.

I feel sorry for the captain and his staff who have to stand out there for everyone to meet. On those short cruises, people are more interested in getting to the bar or the comedy club or the lido deck or the atrium and don't really care to stop and talk to the officers. For me, I'm terribly shy and don't hear very well, so talking to the Italian captain with his accent is a nightmare of "I'm sorry, what did you say?"

When the great majority of the passengers sail right by and ignore the officers, it's no wonder they find it a waste of time.

My husband and I keep saying we'll go meet the captain, but we always manage not to do so.

I think they should do away with the whole meet and greet thing. Reserve it for the longer cruises when you have a greater chance of seeing the officers around the ship anyway.

We've sailed the Imagination 3 times. Definitely not a rust bucket. Very well maintained and the crew take tremendous pride in her. We did the behind the scenes tour and the captain was extremely accommodating. When we saw him around the ship later he made a point to stop and talk to us. Sorry, kind of felt the need to stick up for the Imagination.

As far as the Inspiration goes, we'll be there in September, on a 4/3 B2B. I don't usually go out of my way to meet the captain as he has his job (safety of the vessel) and I have mine (emptying my drinking vessel).
