What did you do to celebrate you retirement?

I retire June 30, 2016 and every time I'm in a silly meeting I just keep repeating my mantra . . . June 30, 2016.

But really, we will go on a cruise from Vancouver to Whittier and then two weeks on land in a rental car and take my son with us. His girlfriend is coming too but paying her own way . . . I know, I'm mean. But she doesn't have the cabin payment because I figured I'd be paying it for him so she could take advantage of that.

The TA asked about a retirement celebration on board so we will do that the first formal night, they say there'll be cake!

Then we will see about a Panama Canal cruise

We took a transatlantic from Miami to Barcelona and did it again the next year and are scheduled again for April 2016. My husband is retired Army so once we get to Europe we can fly home from Germany for $20.00

It works great for us. We did the Canary Islands and Paris while we were there the first year and Germany this past April.

I spent a year in medical hell--6 hospitalizations totalling almost 2 months, including 5 surgeries and 3 months with an IV port at home.

Celebrated surviving that with a cruise last summer, and that started the cruise bug biting hard.

Now enjoying retirement and renewed health by cruising every chance I get!

WOW look at all those upcoming cruises! Congrats and good thoughts on your renewed health.

Looking forward to my Husband retiring January 13.

We celebrated by selling our house to escape the heat, humidity and cockroaches of the South and moved to Colorado to be with our daughter and her children.

Cockroaches don't survive the winters here and we have 4 seasons here compared 1 in the South.

I know that you shouldn't assume, but I will throw caution to the wind. I assume that many of the members that post in this forum are retired, and I was wondering what you did to celebrate your retirement. Does not have be a cruise, just curious (throwing caution to the wind again) what other people did.

I took a cruise on the Freedom of the Seas with DW and another couple. All four of us got the drink package, and it was nice to not have to have a designated driver. We (DW and myself) booked a JS on the hump. I think we got spoiled and will be looking to book JS or higher on our future cruises. It was a Western Caribbean itinerary, and we had a great time. Labadee and Falmouth were alright, but the Caymans and Cozumel fantastic.

So what did you all do?

Craig

We took a retirement cruise on the Explorer 2009,out of Cape Liberty.:)

I am celebrating my retirement by taking this cruise one year later. My lady friend and I are both widows. My brother told me getting on this website might lead to a party the first night of similar people. My first cruise in 10 years and the other was only 3 nights long. So 7 nights is really exciting! Any interest in that kind of party? Dont know much about how this works...Thanks. Alyson;)

tomworldwidewaftage....very much enjoyed your website.

This is what I wanted to do and still want to do. We sold at the same time and travelled for seven months. Kept a few things in a container. Now we rent and travel 5-6 months per year.

Thinking of giving up the rental, travelling for 12-14 months, and then starting again. Lot of things to consider.

Great website, thanks.

The one thing we have learned....yes we can travel with carry on only! It is surprising how little your really need when you come to grips with the fact that you are travelling for months and cannot 'take it all with you'.

Alyson,

You didn't give much info -- and this is your only post so I can't stalk you!

What you need to do is come back to Cruise Critic -- on the yellow 'banner' under the major buttons (like Reviews, Find a Cruise, etc) -- find the link that is Roll Call Tool.

Click, and put in your ship and date. FIND YOUR ROLL CALL!

This is the trick to one or more get-togethers on board, putting faces to names, and possibly linked up with people for lower-priced/higher-value port adventures.

Hi MCC

I have not worked "outside the home" in 30 years, but my husband is still working what his office considers full time (8 half-days plus every sixth night/weekend on call) as a family physician, at 68. He's getting tired, physically tired, NOT "tired" of helping people! He's also on the Board of his medical school alma mater with matters to attend to every couple months, so a full 100+ day world cruise is probably not in the works.

Cruising (which I tolerated in my younger days) is now more and more appealing, over bus tours and never really unpacking! Also we've been on so many of the common escorted tours we're running out of places to go, that we want to go. So the two types of travel that attract me now are going somewhere for a week or more, staying in an apartment or studio... and cruising! Well, three types -- I would also like to see more of the US, in our travel trailer. But all about not living out of a suitcase.

1995 Orient Lines Marco Polo, Cape Town to Buenos Aires

2000? HAL Statendam, Ensenada to Hawaii and back

June 2009 HAL Statendam, Vancouver to Seward, Alaska

June 2011 Vodohod MS Russ, St.Peterburg to Moscow

Sept/Oct 2012 Vodohod MS Russ, Astrakhan to Moscow

Dec 2013 Norwegian Star, Panama Canal & Mexican Riviera

Nov/Dec 2014 HAL Zaandam, Santiago to Buenos Aires

Apr/May 2015 HAL Nieuw Amsterdam, Transatlantic and Western Med

March 2017 HAL Westerdam, Panama Canal

We took a 5 week road trip across the US from Ohio to California. Spent Thanksgiving with son & family in SF, a week in a house in Tahoe and the rest of the time on the road. Oh the sights we saw. Can' wait to pick another part of the US and take off for several weeks at a time. Oh I forgot, we ended the trip with a Mexican Riviera cruise before we drove home from LA.

We won't get a chance to celebrate my husband's retirement. After 41 years and 5 months with the same company he got laid off 18 months before he was scheduled to retire. In fact we canceled an Azamara cruise we were scheduled to take in November and scaled back a land based trip to an all inclusive that was planned and under deposit long before they dropped the hammer. Luckily, we were able to downgrade the hotel to save several thousand dollars.

So, while you enjoy cheap gas think about the over 200,000+ people worldwide who have been laid off in the oil and gas segment.

We will buy a modest home north and south to become true snowbirds and sell off the current house as it is Too big.Still have family up here to visit but we don't want NE winters!

Then, i will take advantage of all those last minute deep discount cruises since i don't have to put in and get approved for a vacation. i will go when i feel like it!:D

Started to looking at at homes in Florida, west coast.

Once the paperwork was done and I had sold my house, I moved down to the city of Toronto and decided to take a great cruise to celebrate. Took the 16 day Hawaii cruise out of Vancouver on the Zaandam and loved every second of it. Retirement beats teaching/working anyday! :)
