Just back from Splendour - Happy to answer questions

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Just returned from the Splendour's European cruise. Happy to answer any questions (if I can) :)

One thing I must mention is that thanks to the wonderful information provided from these boards, I was well prepared for the trip in terms of packing, money, excursions, etc. Thank you Cruise Critic Boards!

Only negative thing to say about the cruise (other than not being able to go to Marseilles due to bad weather, but that's not anyone's fault) is that the food quality (particularly dinner entrees) was disappointing. I love Royal Caribbean and will continue to cruise them -- I just hope that they will make some changes (the way Carnival did) to bring up their standards in this area.

On the positive side, I've read a lot about how old the ship looks. I only saw this in very very slight ways and found the ship in excellent condition and pretty spotless. The staff was all very professional and friendly. Everytime I passed any of the crew on the stairs or hallway, I was greeted with a cheery hello. The Spa, Casino and Shops staff were also very nice. I had heard about the high pressure sales tactics used in all the RC spas, however am pleased to say I didn't get that at all. I definitely recommend the hot stone massage!

I was particularly impressed that I received a letter under my cabin door a few days into the cruise telling me that, as my flight out of Barcelona was late in the day they would be happy to refund my Barcelona airport transfer excursion that I had previously bought and gave me alternative options so I could spend the day enjoying myself in Barcelona rather than sitting on a bus only to be then sitting at the airport four hours before I needed to. Since I hadn't even questioned/complained/commented to anyone on my airport excursion prior to this, I was beyond impressed with their thoughtful and considerate alternative. I took them up on their offer, got my $$ back for my excursion and thoroughly enjoyed the day in Barcelona.

Other positives were that check in and check out were the easiest and fastest that I had ever experienced. It's such a drag to be waiting and waiting on either or both parts of your trip so this was definitely a joy.

As far as excursions, in Villefrance, I went on my own to Monaco and Eze (very easy by train and bus -- thanks again to these boards for all the info!) In Florence, I did Florence on your own with a group, In Rome, we took the train in and made the only bad choice of the cruise. There is a Tourist Bus that goes around Rome where you can hop on and hop off throughout the day. Since there's not much time, this we thought would be a good idea. However, the bus runs every 30 minutes at some times but then every hour at other times. The bus we wanted to pick up came 5 minutes early and we couldn't get to it in time, missing a chance to use our all day pass due to timing to get back to the ship. Instead, we hopped in a taxi and got very lucky to have a friendly driver who wanted to practice English. If we had to do it over, we (there were 4 of us) would have spent our 18 Euros each that we used for the tourist bus and put that towards taking cabs from place to place. In Naples, we took the hovercraft to Capri and did the Blue Grotto.

Thanks for the information. I do have a couple questions which you may or may not be able to answer. Alcohol in the room - what is the story here. Should we pack before we board in Barcelona or can we purchase on board and bring to room? Also curious on the water situation. We drink a lot of water during the day and plan to bring drinking bottles to carry with us. Can we refill the bottles with tap water from the room with Ice or is there water available for purchase at a reasonable price?

Any tips and suggestions are welcome. Thanks again for the info - we are looking forward to it.

Hi Carl,

I can't really address the alcohol question as I'm not much of a drinker and signed up for the soda card on the first day of the cruise. There is water in your room that you can purchase or you can drink the water from the tap as it's treated.

Hope this helps!
