Carnival Muster Drill

Here is a question about the muster drill, a little bit off topic.

 

We sail in January out of San Juan with a 10 PM sailing time. We plan on arriving in SJ around 3 pm and dropping off our stuff on board and then rebounding sometime close to the 10 PM sail time.

 

When would the muster drill take place?

we are doing a similar cruise this week and were told the muster drill is at 9:30 right before sail away. I am dreading this because we are getting up at 2am that morning and will be exhausted (traveling with 3 kids too)

On our last Carnival cruise the advanced announcement came on saying there would be a Muster Drill and to go to your cabin for your like jacket and proceed to your muster station when the announcement/horns instructed you to do so.

 

We had our life jackets on the bed and were sitting on our balcony awaiting the "Call to Muster".

Security came barging into our cabin and banging on our balcony door telling us to get to muster NOW.

We told them, no problem and that we would go immediately and explained why we were waiting like we always had in the past until the horns sounded.

They were very RUDE and continued to yell at us to go NOW.

 

We were some of first at our muster station and the horns didn't even sound for another five minutes so it make for a very long wait.

We once went back to our room to get rid of our life jackets to see our hall have personnel ever few doors. I guess they were making sure no one was in the cabins.

 

Anyway they told us we couldn't go in we were supposed to be at muster. We explained we were released and they looked confused. Fortunately about then others started showing up. I guess they didn't here the announcement

. lol. But they were never rude.

I believe it was my review that this person is speaking of, and what I said was that my husband and I were the only ones at the muster station at the time it was supposed to start. Being first time cruisers, it made me wonder if we were even in the correct place. People eventually showed up, but not until closer to a half hour later, about the time the ship was supposed to sail away. And at no time did Carnival staff do any kind of roll call or checking to see who was there and who wasn't. So I honestly don't know how they would have known if someone skipped it.

 

 

The scheduled time is just approximate. It actually starts when they are ready. They make an announcement and then people start going. It takes a few to get everyone there. As far as roll call, that would be a mess. They do count everyone there. I'm not sure what they would do if they came up with the wrong number.

Princess actually scans your card and knows who has been there and actually has a follow up for those who missed it lol

When sailing from San Juan as a home port, all aboard is 8:30 PM , muster is 9:30 PM and ship will sail at 10 PM. First night MDR is open seating from 6 to around 9. When muster is called you will be told to leave the MDR.

Ah, ok. That must explain it. They must have made the announcement close to 4, and I'm sure it's because they new at the time we weren't going to sail away at 4. We actually didn't sail away until after 7.

 

I don't recall anyone counting heads, though. But I could have just missed it.

We are taking our first Carnival cruise soon. I was reading a review of someone on the Dream and the reviewer said when they arrived at their muster station only a couple people showed up- does Carnival not enforce that everyone must attend this drill?

 

We just got off the Dream yesterday and as of last Sunday, November 8, everyone was required to participate in the muster drill. This one was conducted a little different from our previous ones and seemed to go much smoother. Our muster station was in the Crimson MDR and it was full.

Yes Princess is more accountable. Once our group must have been let go to early because we went back to our room and the entire hallway had crew members standing down the hallway about every 6 cabins or so and told us we couldn't go in the cabin, we needed to be at the Muster drill.

Now Carnival I have no idea how they would really know if I showed up because even if they got a count and totalled it, they don't know what people missed it. They also take much longer than Princess in gathering everyone.

 

I prefer Princess's method but I will still cruise both Carnival and Princess.

That would have literally been my last cruise with any line that did that. So completely unacceptable.

Off topic a teensy bit here but I always love at muster listening to whomever they've decided needs to give us the "speech". On past cruises we've had STAFF say it was the MONSTER drill, The Mustard Drill, we've had STAFF talk to the entire room like we were children. Granted some people don't know how to shut up and put their phone down for 10 minutes so we can get through the drill:rolleyes: But I just vote on calling those few out not treating the whole room like children. Those folks that do the ole duck and dive to avoid the muster would be the very ones freaking out if there were an emergency!

The cabin stewards check every cabin to make sure there is no one hiding in their cabins. The crew also checks every avenue on the ship to see that everyone is at their muster station.

 

I wish they would all go to the muster stations in the main theater and MDR instead of under the lifeboats. On our last two cruises in 2015, we still were under the lifeboats and crammed in there like cattle. One poor lady passed out half way through the drill from heat exhaustion in front of us and that held us up for another fifteen minutes while they attended to her. Felt sorry for the people on the other side of the ship because they didn't know what the delay was for.

Last time I had to haul a life jacket to the drill was 2002 on the Sensation out of Tampa. It was on an outside deck, everyone standing, crowded and HOT! I surely don't mind the way they do it now. In an air-conditioned theater, sitting, or showroom, whatever. Just a talk and demo. Just wish people would get there promptly as quicker you get there, quicker you can leave. I refuse to let myself get annoyed, as it used to be worse. Enjoy your cruise!

 

We went through that a few times on the Triumph and it was enough to make us realize that we need to ask each time to included in the special needs muster drill. Our son just couldn't handle it...he would get really anxious being smooshed in among 100-200 people and the heat and the exhaustion (we would get up at 2 am and drive down to the port in those days..now we know better and drive down the day before) would just combine for not much fun on anybody's part as he melted down.

 

So now we just go "Can we attend the special needs drill please?" and it's always inside, he's allowed to sit down and it's MUCH more pleasant.

Next thing you know they are going to bring the "dinger" that they swipe our S&S cards in when we get off the ship and swipe your card to know you are there! :rolleyes: We try to get there at the last minute so we are at the tail end..we can be first out of the club or theatre and we hang back and let everyone pass us then we are at the end again and when it's over we bust a move on the stairs back to our cabin. No elevator..you'll be waiting all day;)

2 weeks ago on the Fantasy they were scanning sail n sign cards to verify attendance. First time I'd seen that.

On the Fascination too...it was our first ever cruise, so we weren't really even sure what muster drill was. We got out of the pool just as they announced muster and had to sit inside one of the lounges in wet bathing suits and towels and it was cold.

We are in the Special Needs Muster Drill. It is inside and they take you name and cabin number.

It is definitely enforced. They do not start the muster drill until everyone is there. It can be super annoying to wait on those who are late.

We did cruise on the Dream. What we found odd though was that they didn't have very good control over the crowd. Passengers talked all the way through it and they didn't do anything to stop them. Kids were running around, parents not paying attention, etc. I remember them saying that kids under a certain age should have an arm band on at all times. Saw several kids during the cruise without the arm bands on.

 

As I said in my earlier post, it's better in those public rooms but they should make it mandatory that you keep quiet so that others can hear what's going on. Especially for the first time cruisers.

 

I have read on here that after the drill, you are escorted to the lifeboat stations to see where your boat is located. On the Dream, we weren't.
