AF-1 Posted April 3, 2018 #101 Share Posted April 3, 2018 Yes, I knew I wanted to do this. I also am taking my daughter who is in college. I have always been loyal to Carnival but trying other Carnival brands too (Princess and Holland America). One of the first things I did after retiring was to buy stock in CCL for those onboard credits on their lines. That was great advice I got from cruise critic! amypete Posted April 5, 2018 #103 Share Posted April 5, 2018 I am retiring in August of 2019. We are doing a 10 day Princess Quebec City to NYC with a few days there at the end to stay where we did on our honeymoon, many moons ago, at the Algonquin....450 some days to go! Sasksilver Posted April 11, 2018 #104 Share Posted April 11, 2018 I'll officially retire at the end of January 2019, but will be out of the office prior to that on vacation for up to 10 weeks. Tonight I booked my first "retirement" cruise, sailing on the RCCL Anthem of the Seas on a 12 southern Caribbean cruise. Got the 2nd to last studio balcony room (a balcony, hooray!) available with a reduced single supplement. The price and itinerary are awesome. I've never be to San Juan, and two of the ports St. Maarten and St. Lucia are particular faves of mine. AND I get 5 sea days which I also love. One is not enough! Tonight I booked my "second" retirement cruise. Friends and I are sailing out of New Orleans on the NCL Breakaway in December on a 10 day Western Caribbean cruise. We're spending 3 days in NOLA after the cruise as well. Now I just have to get through the next 7 1/2 months. :p
OhioLair Posted April 11, 2018 #105 Share Posted April 11, 2018 Before I turned 50, I read an op-ed piece in a hobby mag that changed how I viewed "retirement". In the piece, the author was recalling how the club he belonged to had received a large donation of unused, unopened model trains. A gift from a recent widow. Her husband had been buying pieces to build the model railroad empire of his dreams once he retired. Sadly, he retired, got sick and died in under a year. The moral of the story was to not wait to do the things you want to do in life. Life is short! Why wait until you retire? Do it NOW so you have the mobility and energy to enjoy it to the fullest. long before that i had been traveling, but that article changed my view. At 50, we transited the Panama Canal, and have done at least one cruise a year since. I turn 60 in 2019, and planning that trip now (Vancouver to Singapore). 66-10mo's, which will be "retirement", not sure yet. But by then we will have been most places we have wanted to go, so maybe it will just be a revisit to my faves. . . . .
ronpes Posted April 11, 2018 #106 Share Posted April 11, 2018 OhioLair, I totally agree. There are so many places that my wife and I want to see and rather than putting it off and waiting until I retire, we are doing them now whilst we can for health and financial reasons. Yes, there are many re-modeling jobs etc that are required about the house but nothing major, and in my opinion they can wait until I do officially retire and then I will have more time on myhands. I always say to my wife that when I am lying on my death bed, I want to be able to say “remember the time we went to Asia, or Australia or New Zealand” instead of “remember that new kitchen we got installed” ! We always wanted to see Australia and we ticked that box last year along with Singapore. We enjoyed it so much we are going back to Sydney this time next year and also going to some of the pacific islands and Hong Kong. Others on my list are; (in no particular order, San Francisco, Hawaii, Alaska, and I would like to see more of Asia. Our son also has the travel bug and later this year will going to Antarctica and all round South America. Now THAT would a fantastic trip for me but perhaps a bit too cold for my DW so I will settle for Alaska. Sasksiler; Well done to you on booking what I am sure will be wonderful trips. So much to look forward to. My countdown clock today is telling me 408 days but,...who's counting! Remember as a fellow poster said, make the days count, not count the days ! new_cruiser Posted April 11, 2018 #107 Share Posted April 11, 2018 I can't remember if I've posted about my retirement cruise here yet. I retired on Monday. At the end of the month, I'll fly to Japan for a few days in Tokyo before boarding Windstar Star Legend 27-day Far East to Pacific Northwest Star Collector. I'll have a leisurely ocean crossing to decompress from all those years of work. Then in Alaska, we will have 6 naturalists on board for about 200 passengers. There will be zodiac and kayak excursions from the ship in Kenai Fjords, Tracy Arm and Misty Fjords.
Sasksilver Posted April 11, 2018 #108 Share Posted April 11, 2018 Ohiolair, I so agree! Though I have booked a couple of "retirement cruises", I been travelling for several years and plan to continue to do so as long as health and finances allow. I have other plans for retirement too that my work/life balance won't allow for, including a move to a more temperate climate. I'm so very tired of Saskatchewan winters - we're expecting 5-10 cms. of snow today (about 2-4 inches). In addition to not leaving things until one is retired, I also encourage folks to retire when it is feasible. We had two individuals in our workplace who passed away this year, both who were eligible to retire years prior, but who for the own reasons continued to work. I feel for them, as they never got to experience retirement and at least of them expressed regret for the plans that never came to fruition. As the old saying goes, don't put off to tomorrow what can be enjoyed today.

LoveThisCruisingThing Posted May 8, 2018 #111 Share Posted May 8, 2018 I will be retiring June 2019 after 35 years of teaching. I will be taking the last Princess cruise to Alaska for the season in Sept 2019. Then in 2020, I will go on a 2 week riverboat cruise in Russia....Moscow to St. Petersburgh. I hope to continue my yearly Christmas cruise to Mexico but that may become every 2 years as I will be closer to family and enjoying holidays with them. Slugsta Posted May 20, 2018 #112 Share Posted May 20, 2018 My retirement was something of a surprise as I was forced to go early on medical grounds so no counting down the days and planning a celebration! I am unable to fly now but an fortunate to live near enough to Southampton to make cruising possible. We would both love to see Quebec, so have a 24 day round trip booked next year. We would love to do the Baltics again too but will have to see how the savings hold up. Meanwhile, we have 2 weeks in the Med and a 3 day shortie (that one with our son) to go this year :)
lenquixote66 Posted May 21, 2018 #113 Share Posted May 21, 2018 I retire in 2.5 years and I'm already thinking about a retirement cruise. My husband will still be working, so we can't take anything longer than a couple of weeks, but I'd like to plan something very special for the fall of 2018. What did you do for cruising when you retired? A 2 week vacation to Alaska .We flew to Fairbanks and did a 7 day land tour by bus and train .The second week was a cruise and it was fantastic. Rare mac_tlc Posted May 26, 2018 #114 Share Posted May 26, 2018 Current plan is to retire in Dec 2017, after 36+ years. Have a Crown Loft Suite booked on the Oasis of the Seas for January 2018. Just in case the plan gets accelerated to a June 2017 date, I have the westbound TA on the Freedom of the Seas booked in October 2017. Things have changed a bit ... as they usually do. Didn't make the December 2017 date, so the CL on Oasis did not happen. Didn't make the June 2017 date, so the Freedom TA did not happen. But, I just handed in my papers yesterday and will retire in July of this year after 37 years 1 month and 5 days.. Have an Aquatheatre Suite booked on Oasis for the whole family in August, a transatlantic on the Brilliance of the Seas in September, and a Crown Loft on the Allure in October. You can't take it with you....... Looking forward to going to Home Depot at 10AM on a Tuesday, never having another Monday, and not shoveling the snow off the driveway at 5AM with a 0 degree wind chill so I can get to work. mac_tlc

Hoping to make a similar post myself in 2 years, 7 months and 7 days!! I’m hoping to do a round the world cruise the following year. I’ve been working since 1969. I’m going to blow thru a chunk of the kids inheritance. They can have the china, silver and the antiques. I’m treating myself. ronpes Posted May 26, 2018 #116 Share Posted May 26, 2018 Congratulations to you all. My count down clock is telling me in 364 days I will be clocking off for the last time. We have Australia / Pacific island cruise booked followed by a week in Hong Kong. I may be tempted to revert to a 3 day week but we will see. DH has already had several "pre-retirement" cruises. He is a "Retiree-In-Training" :) That needs to include "practice" traveling like a retiree, right?
