Oasis of the Seas Trip Report (November 14th 2015 Sailing)

Hello everyone! My family and I just returned from our Oasis of the Seas cruise. We cruise every year, (we've cruised with Carnival and Disney) and this is our third Royal Caribbean cruise. We have previously been on Allure of the Seas and Splendour of the Seas. Our group includes my boyfriend, his parents and myself. Let's get this trip report started!

We flew into Fort Lauderdale late Thursday night, and checked into Hyatt House. We picked up our rental car on Friday morning and visited the Sawgrass Mills Outlet Mall. On Saturday morning, we dropped off my boyfriend's parents at the port and dropped off our rental car with Avis. Our hotel was close to the port as it only took us five minutes. When we arrived at the port via shuttle, there were huge crowds waiting to go through security. I'll admit, this wasn't the most fun or pleasant process. Actually, this was probably one of the worst crowds we'd been through. The decks were separated into two group and each group was to queue up on the left and right side. When we asked the crew members if there was a difference between the queues, they said no. But only when we made it to the entrance of the queue where the rope began that we noticed, that we were in the wrong line. Many other passengers noticed as well, so everyone tried to cut in front of other passengers to get into the right queue. It was not pretty. It was very disorganized and hectic, and there were no authority figures to tell us where to go.

IMG_8597.jpgIMG_8599.jpg

After all the commotion, we finally boarded the ship, and we were allowed to go straight to our rooms! I'm not sure if its a Carnival thing but we always had to wait in the terminal for hours for boarding, and then some to enter our cabins, no matter what time we arrived for a Carnival cruise. Our cabin was on deck 3, starboard side, facing forward.

After dropping off our carry-on luggage, we headed upstairs to the Windjammer Cafe for lunch. The food was mediocre, nothing special but again we noticed there were no utensils anywhere in the restaurant. We took a quick walk around the ship, but I wasn't able to get many pictures due to the torrential downpour.

IMG_8615.JPGIMG_8638.jpg

As the ship left for the ocean after our mandatory muster drill, the rocky waves began. It was rockier than usual and I definitely have not experienced such strong waves on such a big ship. We were tired from all the hoop-la, so we both decided to take a nap before dinner.

Our family had early dining reservations in the Grande dining room. Our waiter, Kevin, was a comedic character. He was always joking and laughing and that's exactly the service we appreciate! There is nothing worse than having a way too serious waiter and believe me, we've had some (re: ice cold Carnival).

Unfortunately due to the wind and rain, the acrobatic water show, Oasis of Dreams, was cancelled. We walked around the ship to try to stay awake and ended up in the arcade. Free play for the rest of our evening!

Stay tuned for day two on board the Oasis of the Seas!

Love reviews and you caught my attention with yours.

Question: What time did you arrive to port?

Where was your muster station?

Thanks

Yes, when did you arrive at port? And when did you board the ship? Usually cabins aren't ready until 1:30, so I'm guessing you arrived at the port well after noon...

Well that explains it! We boarded on the ship right at 1:30 PM according to the time stamp on my first picture on the ship!

We arrived at the port around 12:30 - 12:45 PM.

Our muster station was C3, which was the comedy club.

You mentioned free play in the Arcade your first evening. Was this because the Aqua show was cancelled? Anybody else ever experienced this? I didn't even set foot in the Arcade on my Oasis cruise. I was afraid I would spend too much money at Skee-Ball - (not to mention throwing my arm out :) )

I've seen the free arcade play on other ships the first night. Don't know if it's a fleetwide policy, but it's not uncommon.

I believe it was only from 9 - 10 PM on Day 1! I don't think many people knew, because the arcade was pretty empty during this time, and it got busy right after!

Thank you all for the feedback! I am glad you are enjoying my trip report! Keep the questions coming!

Our first port of call was Nassau. We had an early arrival at 7 AM. Because we had been to Nassau before, my boyfriend and I decided to sleep in. We had looked out our window to a dark, and gloomy looking sky. We finally woke up around 11 AM. We grabbed a couple danishes from Cafe Promenade before heading on land.

IMG_1767.pngIMG_0017.pngIMG_0026.png

We walked around downtown, and took a quick look at the Straw Market. Nothing had changed much in Nassau, but I noticed there was a lot more haggling than my previous trip in May 2012. It was humid but the wind was strong. It was pretty uncomfortable so we decided to head back to the ship. We made it back to ship at 1:30 PM. As usual, we had lunch at the Windjammer and marvelled at the Norwegian Getaway, which was docked next to us. We walked around Oasis' Central Park on deck 8, and headed back to our cabin to get ready for dinner.

IMG_8682.png

So early! I know but day two was also formal night. "And that's why the ship leaves Nassau at 2 PM," our server told us the night before, "don't be late," because we would have plenty of time to get ready. I think the menu was one of my favourites during the week. Over the years, I feel like Royal Caribbean's menu has become mediocre. Usually, nothing stands out for me and I have a hard time picking out an entree, but not tonight! (Food photos are on my website, way too many to link!)

After dinner, we headed over to the Opal Theatre for Cats. Now I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about this show, mostly negative, but I truly love everything cats (the animal) so I was willing to give it a try. I'm sorry to report that I did not enjoy the musical. After the first number, I was genuinely confused by the storyline. I had no idea what was going on, and what was a jellicle cat? My boyfriend was falling asleep, and after the song about the fat cat, I decided it was time to leave. I tried! My in-laws, on the hand, stayed and really enjoyed the second half - and I've heard that the second half is amazing, but I truly couldn't sit through the first half.

IMG_0494.png

So, off we went to Casino Royale for a little while before turning in to an adorable towel elephant.

Stay tuned for day three - our first sea day! - I hope to have this up by Sunday night!

Hello everyone!

Is anyone still following along? Let me know! I enjoy answering questions, and I'd love to hear your feedback!

Day three started with an early wake up call to the spa. I had an appointment for a full body massage with hot stones (for an extra cost). Unfortunately for me, I have very tense shoulders so it wasn't as relaxing as it was painful. In addition to my treatment cost, Royal Caribbean charges a mandatory 18% gratuity on top of it.

Day three was also our first sea day of the cruise. The winds were strong and the waves were rocky at sea. After the spa, I took a quick nap before lunch at our favourite place, the Windjammer Cafe. Afterwards, we spent the rest of our day on the deck in the Solarium, watching the clouds.

IMG_8793.png

We decided to skip the dining room for dinner. Instead, we headed to Sabor for a Mexican fiesta. Sabor is a la carte, therefore there is no cover charge. We ordered two dinner tasting menus for our group. The tasting menu allows you to order one small plate, one taco or quesadilla, one main course, one side and a box of sweets. Our waiter made fresh guacamole in front of us. We ordered a ceviche, calamari, tuna crudo taco, quesadilla, mole short rib, and Mexican rice. Two samplers were plenty of food for us, we had no room for dessert!

IMG_0211.pngIMG_0229.png

IMG_8834.png

The entertainment of the night was the Headliner Show at the Opal Theatre. The entertainer was Kenny James of Star Search fame. He sang old favourites, with a backup band and his son on bass. He got the crowd dancing and singing along, but it was a quiet night with a half full theatre. It was good music for the night, but I felt Royal Caribbean could have done a little bit better. You can tell why Kenny James was singing on cruise ships - his voice certainly wasn't very strong. I believe he had a CD for sale after his show, and he was also offering autographs by the exit.

We turned in early after the show. We turned in early after the show. But I didn't go to bed just yet, I ordered a chocolate pear tart from room service while the boyfriend chowed down on the Sabor desserts. My absolute favourite dessert on Royal Caribbean ships is this chocolate pear tart on the room service menu. It is the best! Not overly sweet, and just the right amount of fruits to chocolate. I always try to have it as often as I can when I'm on board.

IMG_8826.png

The next day was our stop at St. Thomas, the only port with a booked excursion, and we had to get up early. Until then...!

Hope you're enjoying the trip report, I'll be back soon to tell you more!

When I woke up to get ready for our excursion, we had already docked in St. Thomas. The excursion we had booked was the Sapphire Beach Island Drive. Overall, it wasn't all bad, but reviews for this excursion were pretty harsh. Now I'm not expecting limo service, but our shuttle was pretty ghetto like everyone else said. It was a long, and dangerous 20 minutes on the narrow, steep roads of St. Thomas. We arrived at the beach to discover the resort was under renovations, which meant a lot of shoddy looking buildings and a mystery food menu (we later discovered it was a BBQ station hidden behind the hotel). The water at Sapphire Beach was cool and it was mostly calm, but there were enough waves and movement for the water to become cloudy. We had complimentary snorkeling gear, but the cloudy water made it difficult for us to be able to see anything underwater.

IMG_8867.png

Look at that! Not one single soul on the beach! Just kidding. There were tons of beach folks to our left. We were second cruise group to arrive, and there were a few vacationers, but it did not feel crowded at all. We lounged on the beach, and I read a book as the boyfriend slept.

IMG_8914.png

On the way back, our driver stopped at this popular peak for us to take photos. You can see three ships docked on the left side, Havensight. Oasis docked on the far right, at the lousy dock, Crown Bay, with no stores. But what a view it was! It was just breathtaking. We requested to be dropped off in downtown, and we grabbed lunch at a Greengos. It was quite expensive as we only ordered two quesadillas with water. Our bill was $35 USD after tip due to the mandatory 18% gratuity. After a short walk around the block, we took a taxi ($4 per person) back to the terminal. As we waited to board the ship, we were entertained by the street art on the ground.

IMG_0495.png

We stayed in the dining room for dinner that night. Our server surprised us with a Jamaican goat curry. The featured dish of the night was chicken gyoza, which was surprisingly delicious. However due to bad presentation, I don't have a picture of the dish. The boyfriend thought it was freshly made on board, but I thought they were store bought frozen gyozas. I guess we'll never know!

After dinner, we walked around the Boardwalk again. We like to get in a quick walk - and a breath of ocean air every night after dinner. At that time, it is often way too windy on the upper decks, so the Boardwalk was perfect for us. Our entertainment of the night was a late night comedy show featuring Kivi Rogers, and another comedian. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the other comdeian, but Kivi stole the show. He kept us in tears the entire time.

Day five was another port day at St. Maarten, one of my favourite ports. I'll be back soon to tell you all about it. Hope you're enjoying my trip report, stay tuned!

Time to play catch up! I hope everyone had a great Christmas. I took a little extra few days due to the holidays but I am determined to finish this trip report. It is, however, getting a bit difficult to recall certain things because it's been a month since the cruise. But anyhow... let's begin!

St. Maarten is one of my favourite repeat ports. There is always something to do, a new beach to explore and the most welcoming atmosphere. This time, we decided to check out Maho Beach. Maho Beach is on the Dutch side of the island, and it is known globally for its close encounters with airplanes. We took a taxi to the beach, the going rate is $8 per person in a group of four or more. The drive through the island was about 25 minutes. The beach was already overcrowded when we arrived. It was difficult to walk through the beach and because the tide was so high, there was little space to lay on the beach (as you can see in the photos below). The sun was beaming down on us, and it was a scorching hot day.

Maho1.png

We sat on the rocks as we watched the planes land. It was an amazing feeling, and even after the third, fourth and fifth planes, I was just as amazed. It's just insane how close the planes land! The airport runway is literally behind the beach umbrella, across the road! Halfway through our stay, we realized there was a surfboard at the bar with the arrival times of the planes! Do check out that board at the beginning of your stay if you're at Maho Beach for some extreme plane spotting. Only one plane took off while we were there and we definitely felt the engine. It was so strong that it created waves in the ocean, and people standing directly in its path were being blown away into the ocean. Overall, it was a neat experience and I'm glad we had the chance to visit Maho Beach but I don't think I will return to this beach.

We shared a taxi with another family on our return to the ship, but we decided to stop in downtown. We walked around town, had a quick meal at McDonald's and purchased a few souvenirs. Nothing has changed in St. Maarten. We took the water taxi back to the ship and paid for the ride on our way out. It was then that I realized we were going to be ship runners, we were five minutes away from sail time... but why is no one else running? I booked it anyway, and slipped in a puddle, but got back up and made the world's fastest purchase at the Guavaberry stand by the security checkpoint, and I ran to the ship with the boyfriend close behind me. The line up moved slowly, and we made it onto the ship just as it was supposed to leave - or so we thought. When we finally made it back to our cabin, albeit a little confused, we discovered we were an hour early. The moral of the story is... Make sure you are on ship time!

IMG_0851.png

IMG_0860.png

The pictures above do not do St. Maarten any justice. The weather was beautiful - blue skies and sunshine, but somehow it didn't translate in our photos..

That night was the only night we were able to watch the ship leave the dock on the deck. The sun had set and St. Maarten was all lit up. It was a beautiful view. When there was finally no more land in sight, we quickly beelined it to the dining room for dinner.

StMaartenNight.png

dinner1.png

I had pasta for dinner, but I was not full. So, we headed upstairs to the Windjammer for seconds. Again, we took a walk on the Boardwalk, and wandered into the Opal Theatre where Mad Max was playing in 3D. It was a strange movie, so we decided to head down early to Studio B for Frozen in Time. The ice skating show was based on Hans Christian Andersen's fairytales - The Ice Queen, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid, etc. It was enjoyable, and props to the skaters for being to skate so well on the ship in rocky waters, but I do think children would enjoy it much more. Unfortunately, there were not too many in the audience. During the show, they also had a sand artist illustrate The Princess and the Pea on a projector. The art was amazing - I'd never seen anything like it!

Sandart.png

As usual, after the show, we grabbed a quick bite in the Promenade before turning in - to the casino that is - yet again. We gambled our night (and money!) away as the ship sailed into the night...

The next two days are at sea! Our trip is ending, sadly. Stay tuned for our onboard adventures as our ship returns to Fort Lauderdale.

Great review. Personally I love the details and seeing any photos you don't mind sharing (to answer your question :-) ).

What a shame though about your St Thomas excursion. Is the sand on a hill on both sides or is that just what it looks like with the angle of the camera.

Your St Maarten day looks great. We may be Bernard's Tour so we can stop at Maho for one of the places. Good tip not to stand near the shoreline. :D

Its the angle of the camera! :p No hills at Sapphire Beach in St Thomas.

Happy New Year! I can't believe 2016 is already here. This past year has passed by so quickly! I wish everyone a happy and healthy 2016. Here's to more adventures in the upcoming year...

I want to mention a small incident that happened during our visit at Maho Beach. I wasn’t planning on writing about this because I wasn’t entirely sure if it was relevant, and it’s a silly thing but I guess it does affect my report. The waves really were strong that day, and the tides were high. As I was looking for a spot on the beach, I settled near a high rock in the middle of the beach. I didn’t exactly set my belonging down, because I was waiting for the rest of my family to arrive, and I was trying to get their attention. A woman swooped in and literally set her station up and sat down on the rock I was standing in front of. Her husband, uncertain - and aware she was taking someone else’s spot, followed suit. I was so shocked at her rudeness, I was tongue tied and I couldn’t say anything. I also didn’t want to cause a scene, so I moved to the lower rock next to her. I put down my beach bag and towel, and BAM. A huge wave came and took everything away. I chased after my flip flops, and luckily the boyfriend caught the handle of my beach bag before it floated into the ocean. Everything in my bag from my camera to my book was soaked. As a result, I don’t have many pictures from the last two and a half days of my cruise. My phone was shot after the incident. It then spent the next two days in rice, and luckily recovered. My camera recovered the next day after I cleaned all the sand out of the lens, but the battery died (because I stupidly bought the wrong charger), so I was unable to use it. So, that’s my hiccup/sob story of the trip.

Day six was our second sea day. While we were sad to be on our homestretch of the cruise, we were looking forward to be able to lounge on the ship for two days. Our plan for the day was to book our next cruise.

We slept in, and woke up round noon. We stopped by the Solarium to grab a bowl of miso soup and grabbed lunch at the Windjammer Cafe. We lounged on the deck with our phones in the afternoon. We had purchased the internet package after it significantly dropped in price on the second day of the cruise. It worked out to be $13 a day for 5 days. Boy, were we glad to have it on the last two days. We’ve become so dependent on the internet, we didn’t know what to do without it.

Nowadays, you have to book an appointment with RCI's Next Cruise desk to book your next cruise. Walk-ins are only accepted when there are cancellations. I guess on a ship this big, some form of order is required. Since we were already booked on a Carnival cruise for 2016, we were looking at 2017. We wanted to explore the southern Caribbean, so we had a good idea of what we were looking for. We settled on a 10-Night Southern Caribbean cruise on the Serenade of the Seas. At the time of booking, the second passenger's fare was half off and each person is to receive $100 onboard credit for the upcoming cruise. In addition, we each received $50 onboard credit for our current cruise on the Oasis. After our booking, we went back up to the deck to watch the sunset.

sunset2.pngSunset1.png

It was our second and final formal night. As usual, we got all dressed up to have dinner in the dining room. It was lobster night, and we were excited for it. On our previous cruise in Europe, the Splendour, skipped lobster night much to our disappointment. (Does anyone know why!?) We also had a special dessert. All week, our neighbours in the dining room were eating Filipino food. One of the cruiser had a nephew who worked as a chef on the Oasis, so he was always making special dishes for them. They had a fruit and jello bowl, and our server served us some as well. Initially, I thought it was the infamous halo-halo dessert, but it wasn’t. It was very delicious, but the boyfriend and I remembered it was also Baked Alaska night, so we both ordered one as it was our favourite cruise dessert. I gotta say though, I do prefer Carnival’s baked Alaska more so than RCI’s.

Lobster.pngBakedAlaska.png

After dinner, we decided to participate in the professional photoshoots set up around the ship. Unfortunately, we didn’t end up buying any photos. I’m not sure if the skill level has gone down with the photographers but none of our photos turned out very well. There were even a few where our heads were cut off in the photo! We returned to our cabin for a quick change and found this little guy (bat) waiting for us.

Bat.png

Our entertainment of the night was Come Fly With Me in the Opal Theatre. The show had aerial (trapeze) arts, dance sequences and vocal performances. It was the one show we thoroughly enjoyed during the cruise.

One more day before disembarkation in Fort Lauderdale. What a bittersweet feeling! Stay tuned as I wrap up this cruise report.

I almost forgot about this!

Later that night, we also wandered over to Studio B where The Quest Game Show was taking place. It was our first time watching this game show, and we had no idea what to expect. Well, it was definitely an adults only activity! It was hilarious watching the participants try to complete their quests, and a bit awkward at times. Some people were really willing to do anything to win! I definitely would recommend watching if you're up for some laughs on one of the last few nights of your cruise.

Here we are, the last day of our cruise. What a bittersweet feeling!

We woke up around noon and immediately went to the Windjammer Cafe for lunch one last time. As we walked up the stairs, we saw a large sheet cake (with a thank you message) at the entrance! I've never seen this before! People were ogling the cake and taking pictures (like myself), and children were trying to grab a piece, so I skipped when they cut the cake.

It was a cloudy day as we continued our journey back to Fort Lauderdale, but it was a sea day so the deck was completely full. The sun went away in the late afternoon and it became very windy again. It was starting to get chilly so we left to get ready for dinner. When we got back to our room, our disembarkation papers were waiting for us. It was time to pack. I had to have my absolute favourite dessert again - the chocolate pear tart - so we ordered room service as we started to pack.

Cake.pngDeck.pngTart.png

We had dinner in the dining room in the evening. The star of our meal was the bay scallops with the cauliflower puree. I, myself, had three of these appetizers. The cauliflower puree was "to-die-for" delicious! We also got to try a fish dish that our Filipino neighbours were having as well. A little bit on the dry side, but it was nice to try something different! Nothing caught my eye for dessert, so I went with a sorbet. All the chefs came out and danced to "I Gotta Feeling" with the waiters. It is a tradition on Royal Caribbean ships and it was a lot of fun to watch/sing along.

Scallops.pngFDish.png

We said goodbye to our waiter, Kevin, and thanked him for his sense of humour. He was headed to Europe to the Harmony of the Seas so we wished him the best - maybe we'll see him again one day. Funnily enough, he spent the last four years on the Allure, and our family was on the Allure in May 2012, so we were definitely on that ship at the same time!

We rushed back to our cabin to finish packing. We finished just in time for Oasis of Dreams. The show had been cancelled on our first night due to weather conditions. A side note, I've heard that it is almost always cancelled on the first night due to weather, so if you are planning to watch this show, do book the second showing later in the week. Oasis of Dreams is a show filled with synchronized swimmers, skilled divers and acrobats. It was amazing to watch them perform at sea in the night time.

OasisDream3.png

We didn't want our night to end. We spent some time in the casino, and eventually cashed out our points. We had enough for a few keychains and a Casino Royale t-shirt. At last, we decided it was time to go to bed. Tomorrow morning, we'll be in Fort Lauderdale.

Disembarkation

We were the second group to disembark, but it was way too early for us. So we decided to take our time. Our stateroom attendant woke us up prior to docking, which we weren't happy about. However, we didn't realize we hadn't docked as we rushed to get ready to leave. It turns out we were an hour behind. Sometime during the night, the Oasis had picked up two men who were stranded in the middle of the ocean with their boat. As a result, we were delayed. We left our cabin for breakfast at Park Cafe and finally left the ship when it closed at 10 AM.

The line to retrieve our luggage was backed up, but it was a quick process otherwise. We grabbed our luggage, which were the last ones standing for our disembarkation group, and went through customs. Soon, we were on our way to our hotel.

Flights to Vancouver were mostly in the early morning and we knew we wouldn't make it so we had one more night in Fort Lauderdale before flying home to Vancouver. We caught a Panthers' game that night. Although the Panthers lost, we had a great time and experience.

It was a nightmare going home with cancelled flights and a re-route to Miami, but with all that craziness aside, we had a very relaxing cruise. It was a much needed vacation as we hadn't cruised in over a year! We always have a lovely time with Royal Caribbean and this cruise was no exception.

Well that's it: our entire seven day Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Oasis of the Seas. I hope you've enjoyed my trip report! Feel free to ask away if you have any questions regarding the ship or the cruise.

Check out my blog www.floraphung.com for more pictures and other cruise reviews. Thanks for reading along!
