Recommended Posts

Hello, we are going from Stockholm to Bergen on the Viking Homelands Sept 4th and was hoping to get some information on which port the ship docks in the following cities: Stockholm, Helsinki, Alborg and Bergen. Thank you for your help

Don't know the names of the ports, but can tell you roughly where in relation to the towns based on our experience last spring.

Stockholm - right near town, within walking distance of the bridge and Old Town. Right next door to the "Viking" ferry stop. (No relation to Viking Ocean - but you can see this ferry spot on some maps.) Not in the port that's way out of town in an industrial area.

Helsinki - involved a bus ride. We went on a tour, but shuttle buses were provided during the day which would take you near the Market Square. It wasn't a long bus ride, but would not want to walk it.

Aalborg - within sight of the Old Town. Easy walking distance.

Bergen - we were docked in the nearest large ship berth in the central part of town. Easy walking distance to the iconic picture postcard of the old wharf houses. However, there were no other large ships in the harbor at the time due to the Star's Christening, so this might not have been the cases for the summer itineraries. I read that there was an official investigation of the preference shown to Viking for the Christening. But it could be that she berths in this first slot all the time due to her smaller size.

Hope that was helpful.

When the cruises start again you can track the ship on Vessel Finder. It gives you a map and follows the progress of the ship so you can scan in or out to see where everything is in relation to the port dock. This way you'll be the most up to date.

"Rick Steve's Northern European Cruise Ports" will give you information about the various locations. Judging from what I've seen so far, if you are in an even cabin you should be able to see Stockholm off your veranda. Odd will be looking at Sodermolm.. Helsinki, you dock, not at Market Square but to the east of there. Not far but that's why people are talking about the shuttle bus. Now in Bergen there have been a couple of locations. One was where the ship was christened and the other is where a lot of cruise ships are docked. Again, not far from the fish market but a little walk, not isolated. Both these locations are pictured on the Avid Cruiser site in the report of the Viking Star by Aaron Saunders. My understanding is there has been some discussion about preferential treatment for the Star during the christening, maybe due to the fact of the mayor being the godmother of the ship, so that might all be different this year. That's why I had mentioned following VesselFinder.com in an earlier post,

Viking Star is now docked in Bergen. This should answer your questions.

Dauntless, thank you. What do I use to see which dock?

Go to Vessel Finder.com, enter Viking Star. It will give you a diagram of where the ship is docked. If you cant figure it out from that, just keep expanding the view until you do find a landmark you know of and go from there. We are on the port side of the ship and will be able to view the city from our veranda. The angle of the dock allows a better view, even though the ship is positioned facing away from the city. Hope this helps. Once the ship leaves port it is tracked so you must look when in port or catch it the next time through.
