Yes, the law was recently changed so that casinos can operate whilst at sea, not whilst in port or anchorage.

Must have been a very recent change; we were on the Pacific Eden in May/June and the casino was shut for the duration.

 

And please note this cruise does NOT go to Margaret River. The tenders bring passengers to the BUSSELTON Jetty. It's another 50 km to Margaret River, which is about 10 kms inland from the ocean. You can go to MR on one of the organised tours or if you hire a car.

The ships do need to be out to sea at least 12 miles (approx.) for the casino to open, if weather forces the ship to stay closer to shore then the casino and duty free remain closed.

' Due to Western Australian gambling legislation, the onboard casino and bingo cannot operate on domestic cruises. Therefore the casino will be closed for the duration of your cruise. '

 

And it was. Maybe the regulations have changed since then. But it's my understanding it's on domestic cruises that the casino is closed. There was no mention in the email re a 12 km (or miles) limit.

 

The duty free opened but as was said, not for alcohol or tobacco.

Yes, I believe he wants to, but as far as I know, it hasn't been lifted yet.

It must be still in effect then. Surely it would have made the news. A quick google search yielded nothing since 2011 when it was lifted temporarily.

Crown/Burswood own the gambling rights in WA so the onboard casino won't operate. This is also why there are no pokies in pubs/clubs in WA.

I know! It's completely ridiculous! But as kobecat said, it all took place in the late 80's during the whole WA Inc saga.
