Price checking on HAL's site

Can anyone give me tips on how to price out a specific cruise on HAL's site? I'm especially interested in knowing what the charges are for 3rd/4th passengers for a specific voyage. Before the site was redesigned a few years ago, I could get a total and itemized price without putting in passenger information. Now even after typing in all the passenger info, I just get a total without itemization. I find this quite frustrating since HAL advertises "FREE or Reduced cruise fare for 3rd/4th guests!", but don't tell you which voyages it applies to and what the reduced fares are.

 

Do I just need accept having to enter all information and then back-calculate from the total price to figure this out?

If you do find a better method I would love to hear about it. I used to do what you are describing all the time until the web site redesign (still hate it - do you hear that HAL?). We have a PCC and so we did end up calling when things got too complicated with all the different promo's, etc. That being said, when I get desperate enough I do open the site and create fake bookings to try and pry the 3rd & 4th passenger information out of the site. Generally the same offers are available whether you are a Mariner or not from my experience.

 

Signing in seems to just flags your PCC (if you have one) to call you the next day and ask you about your booking. My wife has gotten several calls from our PCC with them starting out the conversation "...so it looks like your husband has been checking out bookings again, anything I can help with?"

 

Our PCC has been awesome and has helped us with several cruises for us and some of our friends. But when you "just gotta know" how much the 3rd/4th passenger is at 2am, the PCC cant help you then...

Other online sites give this information easily. I just use online agencies. I HATE the HAL online booking system for the reasons you mentioned. I hate the idea of picking up a phone more though.

Other cruise line web sites (including some under the Carnival Corp umbrella) do a nice job of itemizing, by passenger, all the charges including any optional charges (insurance, pre-paid grats, etc.) without going through the entire booking process. Not sure why HAL cannot do this as well. :mad:

When you login and do a booking the rates will reflect any promotions that apply to you. I did a mock booking for a dec 4 cruise on the koningdamm with out login in and it was 1700 per person . I then login and the same cruise and room was 399.00 per person for a casino rate that I qualified for.

We are looking at a cruise and if I put my Mariner number in first the price is 1099 each. If I put DH in first it is $699 pp. Both numbers were entered on each booking.

I see references to "Casino Rate" occasionally here on CC. What is the Casino Rate? Is this similar to Las Vegas, where you have one of their preferred player cards and you build up credits based on the level of money you have in play ? You get to a certain level and you get free dinners, buffets, shows, and if you are a really big high roller, (a whale in Las Vegas terms), you get free penthouse suites, free airfare, etc. Does HAL's Casino Rate work like that ? Does the casino staff keep track of how much money you have in play, win or lose ?

We've never used the casino I can think of better ways to waste my money. On our last cruise one of our table mates was on a free cruise from a casino promotion. It was not her first time either. But she spent a lot of time at the one arm bandit. To each their own.

Basically, no, to most of your questions. HAL does not offer free perks/suites etc because you gamble in their casino. The HAL casino discount is typically just one type of promo rate offered to passengers who may, or may not, have used the casino on a prior cruise. We just received a casino discount (we are not big gamblers on any ship, but we do visit) and so did our friends who have never been in the casino.

 

However there is a travel program with Las Vegas casinos that give special rates for cruises. I know nothing about these first hand, but I'm sure some folks here on c.c. could elaborate.

What gives is that you need to be a savvy consumer and do your homework. It's not uncommon for retailers to tailor the rates they charge to what they know certain customers will pay.

For us, price is paramount. I might look at the HAL site for itineraries, but for price I check the online discount outfits. I usually call my travel agent and ask if she can match the online price. Usually she can come close.

We use on line TA sites for price checking. Do not have the patience required for the HAL web site, or even worse the Celebrity site. They are both atrocious...user unfriendly, poorly designed,and very slow.

On the main web page, click on "Mariner Society" in the lower right corner.

 

Then, in the left hand column, select "3rd/4th Guests Special Fares".

 

This answers the above concern, at least for 2016.

The weird thing with us though is we are both 3 star mariners and have sailed together on all our cruises. I don't understand what would differentiate one of us from the other. Is it that I shop and spend onboard so they think I will pay more :rolleyes:?

I can't see the point of HAL charging different rates to spouses.
