Gambling in Hawaii While on Ship

We are considering taking a 15-day Hawaiian cruise next year. What I had not thought about is whether or not we would be able to gamble in the ship's casino when sailing to the different islands. My best guess is that it will not be allowed because Hawaii is a US terriitory. So, I would like to someone to clear this up for me. Thanks so much. :)

You can't gamble while in US waters....period. Pride of America (NCL) doesn't even have a casino onboard. Other ships which have casinos, close them while you are touring the islands, as you are never out of US waters. If you're crossing the Pacific during the trip, they may open the casino for THAT portion...but not while IN Hawaii.

Please disregard cb's posts as they are almost invariably wrong. Once the ship is outside 12 nautical miles, the casino can open. It is only ships that home port in Hawaii (currently only the POA) that cannot open their casinos at all. NCL's Star used to do this during the season in Hawaii.

The casino was open every night on our Hawaii cruise. Even though the distance between the islands isn't much, they go far enough out to sea to open the casino.

That has been our experience also. The casino even opened after our midnight departure from Honolulu. Please correct me if the following is in error: I think that the casino can open once the ship is beyond 12 nautical miles from land.

Casino is open once the ship sails and you are 3 miles out to sea.

I just checked the Princess Patters from our last Hawaii cruise. Here's what I found out:

-Leaving Hilo - Casino closed due to Local Customs Regulations

-Leaving Lahaina - Casino opens approx. 9:30 PM after sailing

-Leaving Nawiliwili - Casino opens approx. 6:30PM after sailing

-Leaving Honolulu - Casino closed due to Local Customs Regulations

I think it just depends on the route taken between the islands as to whether the casino is open that night or not.

Quite actually, Hawaii has been a state since 1959.

Yes, I do remember being told by casino staff of opening time when in Hawaii. Maybe the staff were also not aware of regulation of ship distance from land.

Thank you all for your information. I am very pleased to learn the ship sails far enough out in between the islands. This makes sense. Thanks again.:)
Just check the back page of the Patter on each of the island days. It will tell you if the casino will be open that evening, and approx. what time it will open if it is. Here's what the page looks like. The first shows the casino closed that night. The second shows that it opens at around 9:30 PM after sailing:
