Is it possible to purchase a Hong Kong Octopus card at the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal?

 

If so, can you also redeem the unused portion and deposit at Kai Tak?

There is no MTR service in the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, you can only buy an Octopus at any one of the MTR stations, or redeem it later. You will need some local currency for your bus / taxi ride from the Terminal. But I understand there may be free shuttle buses to the Diamond Hill and Kwun Tong MTR stations, courtesy of the shopping malls there.

thanks for this information. could someone tell me how do you know what balance is remaining on card. are you told after each use? I don't want to find out I have no money left when trying to pay for something .

There are machines for you to buy octopus card and you can use the machine to check balance.

They can also be bought and recharged at any of the numerous 7-11's, that's where the hotel sent me. They can also be used on the Ding-Ding trams. I loved traveling on the double decker trams. You just get on and pay when leaving with card if you look your balance will be displayed.

Each time you use the card the current balance is displayed on a small screen near the sensor.

FYI - there are no authorized Octopus Card outlet at/inside KTCT - just take the free/ship shuttle to one of the participating shopping malls, next to MTR station and you can purchase one (also from 24/7 convenience store including VanGo, 7-11 and VanGo.

With the On-Loan Octopus, unused money can be processed for a refund, including the $50 HKD deposit at MTR stations, including HKIA's MTR customer service center (Int'l Airport) for those flying out/departing by air - NOT at Kai Tak, however. Unused money do not expire and when it is deactivated after 1,000 days - it can simply be reactivated at a MTR service center in H.K. You can transfer and/or "gift" that to a family member, friend or someone traveling to HK as a very useful and practical item - and, yes ... it is accepted at McDonalds and Starbucks, along with numerous chains of food outlets and pharmacies, etc. in buying "essentials" for visitors, like bottled water.

After reading all this why would anyone get the tourist sold card? You are out the 39HK, Am I missing something?

 

Also one question, can a couple share one card?

In the old days, the tourist card was available only to non-HK residents with special features, and a collector's item & kept as souvenir (got one buried somewhere from 25 years ago) - technology had been in continuous use since then, way ahead of the Americas. My recollection, as long as there's residual value remaining, even if it's just 5 cents in HKD - the last ride on MTA is free & you get to keep the card (as no refund or deposit were stored.)

 

It was especially good for short visits - for longer stays & to make full use of the Octopus feature, the regular card is more practical - it typically take just 5 minutes to go to the counter, wait for one's turn & get the deposit refunded (and, do this at the airport after exiting AE train, before proceeding to check-in & thru security, as MTA's service centre/kiosk, etc. are all landside.)

 

Each person should get his/her own Octopus Card - it's not designed for sharing on a given trip. Locals can apply & get their personalized card with photo embedded for extra security (well, it can track the card user's movement & spending, etc. as long as one isn't concerned about privacy)

 

The Airport Express card with special ride discounts & sharing, etc. are the exception as a single card is activated and used to take advantage of the special offers.
