Sand Dollar Lady Posted October 18, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 18, 2016 If this is not allowed please forgive me. I am going on my first Royal Caribbean cruise in November. I purchased 3 one hundred dollar gift certificates thru Smart rewards (verizon wireless). I was going to apply them to my cruise for onboard credits as a surprise to my other two roommates. I just found out that I can't used them for onboard credits and I also can't cancel and rebook because I am past the final payment window. I also can't use them because I did book through a travel agent. I have called Verizon and they will not take them back and I have also been on the phone for two hours with Royal Caribbean and they will not do anything for me. I am looking for any suggestions on how I can recoup my money. TIA

You need to go higher up the ladder with calmness and control. :)
Ken at the beach Posted October 18, 2016 #3 Share Posted October 18, 2016 (edited) How long are they valid for? You may need to book another cruise to use them. Edited October 18, 2016 by Ourusualbeach

ericm078 Posted October 18, 2016 #5 Share Posted October 18, 2016 I had a situation with a reward card my wife had through work. We couldnt use it onboard as an on board credit. We ended up using it ahead of time booking specialty dinner reservations, and a shore excursion. There was one dinner we ended up canceling on board amd the refund was given to use as an a credit to the room. Not sure if that will work in your situation or not. kknorr0320 Posted October 18, 2016 #6 Share Posted October 18, 2016 The Verizon ones say they have to be used to book a new cruise. I think your best bet is to book another cruise. Check to see how long they're good for. Sent from my SM-G900V using Forums mobile app
cb at sea Posted October 18, 2016 #7 Share Posted October 18, 2016 I've never understood the use of those "gift cards" or "certificates"...what's wrong with real money???
kknorr0320 Posted October 18, 2016 #8 Share Posted October 18, 2016 The Verizon ones are a 10% discount. So if you buy $4000 worth to pay for your cruise it costs $3600. Sent from my SM-G900V using Forums mobile app
NJporkroll Posted October 18, 2016 #9 Share Posted October 18, 2016 The OP has no recourse with Verizon. Why should VZ be responsible for the buyer not reading the terms and conditions of the item prior to purchase. In other words "caveat emptor" Sent from my iPad using Forums
reedl Posted October 18, 2016 #10 Share Posted October 18, 2016 Are the transferrable? If they are, you could sell them to someone, perhaps either at face value or the discounted price you paid. Either way, you need to read the 'fine print' for everything you purchase. But the best advice would be to book another cruise.
waterbabe40 Posted October 18, 2016 #11 Share Posted October 18, 2016 I have a bizillion points with Verizon precisely because their offers and "discounts" are basically useless if you read all the fine print and restrictions. I can never use them!

Sand Dollar Lady Posted October 19, 2016 Author #13 Share Posted October 19, 2016 The end of the story was that I was able to sell them. Yes! I have now learned to read the fine print. Thanks for all of the input.
