Back from 5/22 Diamond

Recommended Posts

We made it home, overall the cruise was a success, had some obvious bumps, but it ended smoothly and none of the "big" deals turned out to be enough to really even take the shine off of it. Debarkation was business as usual, and she is on her way to a plain old no-hassels cruise for the 5/29 sailing.

One tiny tid bit, you can no longer make reservations at Sterlings for every night of the week, two is the most you can have, you can still walk in, but can only reserve it for 2 nights.

Hi Steve,

Glad you had a nice cruise! Are you going to post a review? Your positive attitude would make for a good one! Not that the glitches can't be mentioned, but you seem to put them into perspective!

Wish you were still cruising but welcome home anyway. I haven't been on the boards for several days so didn't see any posts telling us if you were successful in obtaining an upgrade. We were amazed at the number of people who cancelled their cruise due to the problems.

I posted earlier that I would have stayed on the ship even if it never left Seattle as long as I could enjoy the dining and entertainment.

Once you got on board did you immediately go to a house phone to make PC reservations or wait till you got to your room?

We did NOT get an upgrade, we were high on the list but that list was abandoned to soothe the savage beasts that cried so vocally at the poor pursers staff. Normally you call the concierge from your own phone but it can be done from a house phone dial "D I N E".

I would also have been fine onboard in any port but Alaska was gorgeous and 50 degreee, back to nearly a hundred here. I think the $500 credit was more than reasonable, would gladly X off a port on every cruise for that, we spent like drunken sailors and still got cash back. That was BETTER than an upgrade, no bill at the end, $$ in fact. I could get used to that.

As to the people who left, I am happy they can try again without financial loss but many of them were petulant children in terms of attitude and the idea of listening to them for a week was not a pleasent thought, so everybody won.

I have enjoyed your post. How was the timing on disembarkation. We will be finishing our cruise on the second Saturday in September and expect security to be high at SeaTac and with a 12:30pm flight to the East Coast we are a little nervous. Any feedback on your experiance would be helpful. Thanks

We cut a fair amount of worry by carrying our own luggage off, that makes you first to leave and INS isn't backed up till the lines start really flowing, we were at the airport by 8:00 a.m. *your mileage may vary*.

Thanks so much for your report Srphnx! I was wondering how that cruise would end up. Do you think the passengers as a whole were satisfied with their cruise? Just curious. icon_smile.gif

Welcome home, Steve!

I've only read one post on another site from one of the group that disembarked last week. According to that person, "hundreds" of people jammed the atrium area and a "mutiny" (again, his words) was averted only when a large group was allowed to disembark.

I'm surprised that the staff delayed the ship's departure even further to allow this group off. Was it really that ugly?

SpongerRob,

It was actually 192, and yes they were allowed to disembark, their concern was being refunded in cash not cruise credit the cost of cruise, air and lodging, feeling that the itinerary was so radically different that the cruise they booked was no longer the one offered.

I was in that crowd as an observer untill 2AM it was in the Atrium and casino. There was the use of the words "uprising" and "mutiny" the later being silly as passengers don't mutiny, crew does.

Either word was reckless as Princess would legally be within their rights to take threats like them to heart and put you ashore with a pair of shiny new handcuffs as your consolation prize. These days threatening a vessel carrying pax is s TSA thing and I think they were very poorly chosen words.

How Rude, selfish, and obnoxious.I'm glad for you, Steve, that they got off. What a trip, that would have been, And I hope they all give up cruising all together, and give us all a break. This subject is bought up all the time, and should be no surprise to anyone. Ships can leave late, get back late, miss ports, miss entire itinerary and go in an entirely different direction. icon_eek.gif If you want exactly what you paid for,WITH NO CHANGES, don't cruise. Go on a land vacation, but don't do islands. They can close because of storms!!!

Thank you for a honest report. My DH and I would do the same thing as you and your wife in that you go with the flow and if things happen, they happen. I would take $500.00 credit anytime and have a good time. It was to bad you had some unruly passengers on your cruise. We have had those kinds of people on former cruises (the cruise was on schedule and nothing major happened) I think we will always have people who b**ch and moan about anything. I do have a question for you in regards to on board booking. I have done that on previous cruises but my question is if you only get one $100.00 deposit down on a future cruise and then you decide on a cruise does your wife also benefit by depositing another $100.00 and shipboard credit. I guess my question is will she also receive the shipcredit even though you decide later on to go on another cruise. I hope I am explaining this right. Again thanks for the honest review.

Even land vacations can change. We were to spend a week in Matha's Vineyard about 12 years ago. When we got to the steamship authority at Woodshole, they were evacuating because of a hurricane. It was supposed to hit North Carolinas but I guess no one told the storm that !

While we could have taken the last ferry there, thank goodness we didnt. No power for like a week, beaches wrecked. People who were there that week did not have a vacation. So there are no guarantees.

I also have been on cruises with changes in ports. The best was my honeymoon in Greece, where they changed the SHIP on us. I purposely booked a new vessel, but at the the last minute that was leased out to a magnate. We were put on a converted frieght ship, where even the DR was below the water line. Our whole room was carpeted- even the ceiling !!!! I guess that was to keep the noise from the engines down. We did get a hundred dollars for our trouble ! The worst was they moved us to the ship we were supposed to be on for the last night. It was alike a palace by comparison. It was actually worse seeing what we had missed since we had acclimated to our fate. Just to add to the problems when we docked at Pireus our tour did not wait for us and went on as they werent notified that we were coming back on a different ship. So there we were, with our bags, I had a stomach bug and no plans for 3 days till we were to set out to Cofu. our last stop (we had already been in Athens a few days too long). We ended up flying to Skiathos for a few days. On our way out, my new DH, was reading the Olympic flight schedule for Corfu to Athens and realized that our TA had booked us on a flight that was due to leave COrfu too late (she booked us on a pm flight instead of an am flight) to connect to our transatlantic flight. This is only a few of the misadventures from that vacation !

BTW this was 21 years ago before computers, etc, when people used and relied on TA's.

rI am not sure which angle to hit that from but here goes, I put down $100, hold the booking open. Later we select an actual sailing, cabin etc. At that time, I add another $100 deposit for the second person, unless within the 75 day full payment window, and then BOTH parties get the onboard credit for the future sailing booking.

To further add to the honey pot, you get two "share the wealth" coupons allowing up to 2 other couples to do the SAME thing. They can deposit only $100 each and also reap the shipboard credits from $50 to $150 depending on inside/outside and length of cruise, up to $150 each for outside in excess of 16 days.

We were on the Diamond last week also and happened upon the meeting in the Casino. It was an ugly, volatile confrontation with one passenger threatening to "pull all the fire alarms" to wake the rest of the passengers. icon_confused.gif

We are glad the unhappy cruisers got off too.

They not only wanted Princess to pay their airfare home but also the airfare to the ship. icon_rolleyes.gif

We also noticed that some of the most vocal stayed on the ship.

BTW, for disembarkation, we were the 6 or 7th group called and were walking down the gangway at 9:00am and were pulling out of the parking lot on the Princess transfer to the airport at 9:35.

We had a great time and would do it all again.

Good for you!! icon_biggrin.gif What a mess. I am embarassed for all of us, that Princess cruisers would act that way. They were angry to be inconvenienced, but had NO problem inconviencing anyone else!! No attack posts yet, but they will get no sympathy here!!! icon_redface.gif
