Customs in Portland after Canadian ports

Recommended Posts

We are on Summit on the Independence Day cruise. We are scheduled to arrive in Portland at 9 am. Our previous stops include St John, NB and Halifax. Will we be required to go through Customs when we debark in Portland? If so, any clue as to how long the process would be? All are US citizens with passports. We are interested in booking a tour at 9:30. I will also be posting this on the Canada/New England boards.

We've had a couple of these types of re-entries into the US in the middle of a cruise. Sometimes it is quick and easy but a couple of times, they have held us for several hours. If you are on a ship's excursion, you'd be better off. I would also hesitate to say you could make it by 9:30 AM if on an independent tour.

We were on the Summit last fall and were suppose to go through customs in Bar Harbor. However, we missed that port and had to go through it in Portland. Maybe it was because they were not prepared for us, but it took over an hour from when we docked and the custom agents came on-board to the start of the face-to-face process. Even Captain Kate walked the line of people and apologized that it was taking so long. They let Celebrity tours go through customs first, so unless you got in that line, all others would have been delayed by at least a couple of hours.

Hopefully, this was the exception, not the rule.
