Live from the Adonia ... my mixed review thus far!

Recommended Posts

I am going to contradict myself as I write but that is a good reflection of the experience so far. Very mixed and contradictory. We are having a wonderful time and Cuba is an absolute must see. One of the best parts of the experience is the staff; quite possibly the most genuinely intentioned, warm and friendly staff we have ever encountered on many different lines. The contradiction is that they are disorganized and the different departments aren't too sure who is doing what or when! To our delight, the food has been much better than expected but again, with oddities like a very nice salad bar with the very worst dressings I have ever seen. The buffet has good selection but we find it difficult to navigate with tight spaces and everyone going in every direction. Some spots on the ship are spectacular, our early favorite is The Glass House, a unique and gorgeous wine bar. Other spots are run down and worse, areas are dirty in need of cleaning. There are sections of the ship that have very musty and unpleasant smells, perhaps some carpets need to be replaced. More later!

The two included tours in Havana were very good. The Grand Ballet Theater was absolutely spectacular!

A couple more things that are not the best .... if you, like me, are a decaf coffee drinker, this is not the spot for you! The regular coffee is excellent but the decaf is terrible throughout the ship.

The worst thing to me has been the excessive vibration we have experienced in our aft room. It's been great since we docked but I'm bracing for when we set sail again in a couple hours!

We started in a balcony room and we admit to being somewhat spoiled. We found it very uncomfortable, very hot with weak air conditioning, and tired looking with a bathroom that was much too small to deal with. We took a paid upgrade to a suite, it's magnificent, and it is worth every penny to us. All together though, this has been a hugely expensive vacation but we are here before there are changes to Cuba.

Still, the experience has been amazing and the enthusiasm of the staff is contagious. There is some sense of frustration that they came so close but did not hit it out of the park.

I am sailing on Fathom again in a few weeks..just wondering (since you mentioned salad dressings). Do they still provide bottles for fat free dressing on their salad bar? Thanks

What aft balcony cabin did you have? We are in one of the aft cabins in between the suites and I've read that there had been some problems with this cabin being too hot. Did you pay onboard to upgrade to a suite?

We were in after balcony a90 between the suites. It was very hot. Eventually an engineer redirected air into our cabin and it was comfortable. Unfortunately it appeared that the fix involved redirecting air from a suite. I overheard the passengers staying in the suite complain that their ac was not working the same day our ac was "fixed".

I did not see bottles for salad dressing. They had a blue cheese dressing that was truly thin as water with about as much taste!

Whoa, we were next door in balcony room A93! It was like a sauna in there and yet they acted like nothing was up. First call from the engineer was to say that the door must have been opened and it needed some time to cool off. After a few minutes and feeling the weak air flow from the vent, we went down to Guest Services. There was no way we would have been able to stay in that heat!

What happened in Guest Services? Did someone then come fix the A/C problem??

Unfortunately, as I've stated, I'll be in A90 next week and will probably need help with this same hot cabin problem!

Thanks

When we got to guest services, called reception here, we took a paid upgrade to a suite. I'm sorry that I do not know the answer to the a/c situation in those rooms. If you are able to call and ask to move your cabin down a deck or two, I might try that. It seems hotter the higher up you go.

There have been several misses this week, sad.

You really need to insist that you didNOT LEAVE THE DOOR OPEN or the drapes. It is ridiculous but I had to have the engineer in my cabin 3 times and I insisted that he fix the problem before he redirected the air into our cabin. Also I told him I knew before boarding that there was a problem with ac in this cabin because I read it here on cc. He told me he never heard of any complaints. After complaining repeatedly it was finally taken care of so you must b persistent. Other than that issue we had a great cruise. I just don't think we should have had tlo live in the sweat box for 3 days. I am not kidding I have been in a sweat lodge that was cooler. Good luck

Thanks everyone for all your input.

I think I'll stick with A90 and really be firm about problems I've read about in cabin (taking a copy of relevant posts with me).

I really want to experience an aft balcony before paying lots of $ for one on a future cruise. Since I only paid for an Oceanview on this Fathom cruise, I'll deal with it.
