Jridley84 Posted May 7, 2017 #1 Share Posted May 7, 2017 So my wife and I are finally going on a cruise for our tenth anniversary. This has been a dream for me for 20 years, and we have been saving for quite awhile (sad but true, we don't make that much money). I've been reading a lot recently that Royal Caribbean has been getting really bad about up selling. My worry is that I will get very annoyed knowing that we've spent almost $1500 on this trip and we still get bombarded with requests to give them even more money. I'm thinking about cancelling my trip with Royal Caribbean (trip not until Sept 30th) and go with Carnival since I have not read much about up selling with carnival. Thoughts? pete98 Posted May 7, 2017 #2 Share Posted May 7, 2017 IMHO, that will probably happen on all budget cruise lines to some extent. While we've never cruised Carnival, we have experienced it in RCI and NCL. You can avoid it easily if you want to. chadbt Posted May 7, 2017 #3 Share Posted May 7, 2017 Hooray for your first cruise, and congratulations on your anniversary! The up-selling/huxterism/special deals world can be annoying, but in my experience avoided easily enough. Stick to your budget (you obviously know how to do that), smile and say "no thanks," and have a wonderful time.
cb at sea Posted May 7, 2017 #4 Share Posted May 7, 2017 All of the lines give you the opportunity to spend more! All it takes is a pleasant, "No, thanks"...that's all!
Jridley84 Posted May 7, 2017 Author #5 Share Posted May 7, 2017 Thanks all for your feedback. I'll stick with RCI
Rare vacationlover_mn Posted May 7, 2017 #6 Share Posted May 7, 2017 On all of our recent cruises, they very nicely left us alone when we said no thank you. We did not find it annoying at all :). Enjoy your cruise! Sent from my iPhone using Forums mobile app

Last thing in the whole process to worry about. I have never been contacted about an upsell
cruising maniac Posted May 7, 2017 #9 Share Posted May 7, 2017 I know you must be excited for your first cruise. Bet it won't be your last. All cruise lines try to extract as much of your money as they possibly can. Just say no thank you. Have a fantastic time.
Single_dreamer Posted May 7, 2017 #10 Share Posted May 7, 2017 I've sailed Carnival and the upselling is equally as aggressive. You just need to stick to your budget and learn to say no. It's hard. But true. I save extra money for additional tipping. Sent from my SM-J700M using Forums mobile app
Elationismyship Posted May 7, 2017 #11 Share Posted May 7, 2017 I've sailed Carnival 15 plus times and other lines 10 plus times . . . .the up sell is everywhere but no worse than the Costco cashiers asking you to upgrade your membership to the Executive membership at every counter. It won't ruin your cruise with any line. Folks (lots who have been cruising for awhile) like to nit pick a lot of things about all cruise lines -- take it all with a grain of salt. Congrats on your first cruise! Sent from my iPad using Forums
nyllrap Posted May 7, 2017 #12 Share Posted May 7, 2017 Have a fabulous trip! My husband and I usually sail with Royal Caribbean, spend very little while on the ship, and always have a great time. What ship will you be on?
ixian Posted May 7, 2017 #13 Share Posted May 7, 2017 Going from RCI to Carnival to avoid upselling is the definition of frying pan>fire. Just ignore it and enjoy your holiday.
Grandma Dazzles Posted May 7, 2017 #14 Share Posted May 7, 2017 Congratulations and hope you enjoy your first cruise. I have never found aggressive up selling. If someone offers me something that I am not interested in I just say no thank you. One piece of advice I would offer would be to read the CC boards. Be aware of any additional costs that may present themselves - things like drinks, photos, casino, spa, etc. You can eat very well without specialty restaurants - don't be afraid to order appetizer, soup, salad, entrée, dessert, etc. There are no limits! Budget for any excursions you may wish to take. Buy a drink package (if that's what works for you); maybe you don't need one and will be happy with the included drinks. You can prepay most of your gratuities so you are okay there; other than any extra tips you may wish to give. Enjoy!
kalliekae Posted May 8, 2017 #15 Share Posted May 8, 2017 One can spend as many $$$ as one wants or one can simply say "No thanks" and not spend an extra penny. I've never been annoyed by anyone. Be positive and enjoy your cruise.

CCC3 Posted May 8, 2017 #17 Share Posted May 8, 2017 Did you get any in board credit? If so you can look forward to spending that, instead of out of pocket money. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

Congrats on your first cruise! Costco used to really bug me about upgrading my membership, until the day I asked them if they wanted my card back....and offered to just leave my basket right there. Upselling exsists everywhere but on cruise ships they are usually pretty good about accepting "no thank you". Just go and enjoy it and practice that no thank you a few times.
