Lip Sync Battle

I think its all how you look at it. If you haven't kept up with television, Lip Synching is the latest craze. Several shows featuring lip synching with even celebrities joining in. Then your local hot spots and bars have now Karaoke and/or lip synching featured. A lot of folks enjoy these activities and get pretty creative with it. It becomes very enjoyable to participate and view. It may indeed be a way for Carnival to save money, but I do believe it is an activity that if done correctly can be very enjoyable. When Carnival introduced Dive-In Movies, I at first said who is paying money to take a cruise to watch a previously run movie. Every Carnival cruise I have been on since they introduced Dive-In movies, the lounge chairs are completely full, the popcorn line is long and even on the colder nights people will lay up with a towel or blanket and enjoy the movie. I myself try to work the movies into my schedule as well. Yes I enjoy the shows with the dancers and singers, but if you have been cruising for awhile you realize even these can become a little cheesy or overly familiar. Now bringing folks like Tim McGraw and Kerry Underwood, Jay Leno and the likes is definitely an added bonus. I have yet to be able to participate because every cruise I book with the professional stars has been sold out. Yet everyone tells me it is amazing. So in my opinion, I say variety is the spice of life and don't let a change in activity ruin what could still potentially be a lovely experience especially when you see the ridiculously low prices you get for a Carnival Cruise. I mean really, I am a world traveler with recently flying to Japan, Italy and Dubai and let me tell you a Carnival cruise is a drop in the bucket. During Spring Break in April, we flew to Florida, rented a car, booked a hotel and purchased a three day pass to Universal Studios. Let me tell you for a family of 3, without even getting in any food, our three day amusement park ticket was $215 per person. That's just to walk in the door of the park. Parking each day at the park was $20. We still haven't even had a soda, popcorn or lunch. We have to purchase on top of that 3 meals a day, hotel, rental car, etc. You get my point. For a measely few hundred dollars, Carnival is giving you transportation on the ocean to various islands and countries that you can visit without paying extra if you just choose to walk around or taxi it to the beach, hotel room, unlimited dining experiences at multiple places on board, entertainment throughout the day where guest can get involved or just watch, dive-in movies, broadway type shows and all of this is inclusive in the price. If you then want to go above and beyond the menial price of the cruise, you can pay for spa treatment, liquor, casino, Upscale dining lite the Steak Houses on board, etc., etc. I mean really, I went to Cozumel and Key West for $179 for 5 days and 4 nights. I went to Nassau and Freeport for 4 days/3nights for $249. I went to Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Grand Cayman for $569 6 days/5 nights. I went to Ensenada, Mexico for $80 on Carnival Imagination (no lies) 3 days/2 nights. I could go on and on about my 11 cruises with the most expensive one being $569 per person. I'm about to take my son on the Liberty 4 days/3 nights with a nice cabin on Lido deck for $329 per person. So I say cheer up, when people say you get what you pay for, that is not true with a cruise. You get so much more than you pay for. Please tell me where I can pay $329 on a land vacation and get everything included, hotel, unlimited food and entertainment for 3 full days. Unheard of. Just to get into Disney is $100 before you do anything else. So don't let the new lip synch showcase get you down. I am so hoping it is on the Liberty next month.

(y) Great positive post and very true!!! I go to Disney world every year for the Food and Wine festival in the fall and I certainly spend a lot more money on just the hotel and tickets than any cruise I've taken with Carnival. And gotta pay Disney prices for everything since we stay on property.

Our last cruise on the Freedom was the inaguration of Lip Sync Battle on her. The first sea day they had the competition for the 2 contestants. 1 male and 1 female. I believe they each recieved spa treatments sometime thru the week.

The male contestant made a comment that he didn't know it was going to be as big of a commitment throughout the whole cruise. They had a lot of rehearsals and other events that they had to show up about every day.

The last sea day is when they had the main event. We enjoyed it alot. They even had the children from the kids clubs come up on stage and do an act between the main events.

Thanks so much for this!! I couldn't agree more. When we sail it will be our 14th cruise with Carnival. Granted we only sail once or twice a year but even with that it feels the same ole same ole. I'm excited for this new form of entertainment.

Everyone entitled to their opinion but replacing professional entertainment with lip sync is not something that I think is an improvement.

Now if they did it in the main showroom during a sea day afternoon that would be fine but they do it to eliminate an evening of professional entertainment.

Exactly what they have done with love and marriage show as well as Hasbro.

I agree I didn't enjoy the love and marriage show as an afternoon show I certainly don't care for it as a main event.

People can say as they wish about what a great value CCL is but no question to me is their entertainment has sure gone downhill quite a bit.

We live in a small town without much live entertainment and that is a major part of what we cruise for.

When they remove live entertaiment and give us marriage show, lip sync and hasbro in the evening I think it is rather pathetic.

i agree. i had a couple nights on the ship when the nightly entertainment was poor and i was bored on the ship. what is the point of having a big theater for no real entertainment? Maybe that is why carnival is downsizing the theater to a lounge like on the sunshine/vista and horizion.

We are diamond on CCL and think the Spirit, Conquest and Dream class have correct amount of space dedicated to entertainment.

Have heard enough of what they have done on the Vista class that we have no interest in sailing those ships

I am looking forward to seeing a lip sync battle at some point but it is disappointing to think that it's taking the place of a stage show. I know they were cheese but I liked the playlist productions. To me this is slightly above the guest talent show night. Those were rarely fun and my own husband even performed on two different cruises.

Saw the Lip Sync Battle Saturday night on the Sunshine. The concept is fun but the show was only OK, not great primarily due to the skill level of the contestants. I liked the old days of Carnival Idol when they selected people who could actually sing. But, I was happy to see something different than the Brittney Spears, Madonna, etc. show. I got really tired of that one.

I know what ships it's on. I just was not sure how it was being used. If it was a sea day afternoon entertainment or replaced a nightly production show. I'm excited to see it but was hoping it was more of an extra not a replacement

I am interested to see how lip sync battle plays out. It could be fun to watch or really cheesy.

I would enjoy carnival much more if they would swap venues and put the comedians on the big stage and move hasbro, love & marriage, etc. to the punchliners lounge since the comedy shows are always so crowded.

From what I read it is a daytime poolside thing for the preliminary rounds and then the finals are at night in the main lounge.

For those saying it's used to "cheapen" the entertainment or to avoid providing or paying the talent, judging by the description and photos in post #7, it looks like Carnival puts a lot of effort into this. Ok, so the two main "performers" are passenger volunteers, but Carnival's professionals spend plenty of time rehearsing with them to help them put on a good show, so the talent is being utilized. It's lip syncing, it's not supposed to be a grammy award winning performance.

While I could agree that something like this might be better suited for a day-time show instead of replacing a main evening show, with the success this form of entertainment has had on TV, I'm sure Carnival's testing the waters to see how it does. Maybe they'll end up moving it out of prime-time if it's not as successful as they'd hoped. I say give it a chance. People were beating it up as soon as it was announced, before it was even introduced on board. "I don't like it so they should get rid of it. *grumble grumble*" You're probably not going to be pleased with every form of entertainment on board, with or without lip sync battle. To each their own.

I'm very excited for this! I love watching the lip sync battles on jimmy Fallon! I'm not upset at all about it replacing the "main" shows as I find them pretty stupid anyways. I usually only go to comedy and love and marriage lately, but I can't wait to see this too!

For all those folks who are "grumbling" about replacing "professional entertainment", I just returned from a five day aboard "Paradise", and the "professional" entertainment couldn't have been worse! There was a hypnotist who was terrible, and the Playlist shows consisted of "Epic Rock" which was nothing but distorted guitars and NOISE! The second show, "80's Pop to the Max", was a bit better, but not much. The "Hasbro" show sucked, as usual, and the "Love & Marriage" show was the most entertaining of the bunch. Bottom line, I've seen some passengers who can sing, and dance circles around any of the "Pro" entertainment.

I must be missing something - those that say this is being used in the place of professional entertainment - in a 7 or 8 day cruise do they have a show every evening? I've only been to a couple of the "broadway" type shows in the last several years - it's just not my thing - but, I don't remember seeing a main show in the funtimes every night. I use to go to the shows the first few cruises, but I admit that's been quite awhile ago, so I thought the lip sync battle was an addition rather than a replacement??

there is only 2/3 playlist production shows on the ship which is more like a regular "broadway" type shows. The other nights, there is some kind of fly on entertainer like the hypnotist, the game show and then they try to find something to fill in for the rest of the days (like the CD might have their own show)
