Murder on Emerald Princess

You have no idea what could have happened in a ship cabin or hotel room prior to your stay, so why would it matter. You might not even know what had happened in your house prior to you buying it.

Happens. Remember a motel stayed at once. I checked in Monday afternoon, was watching local news on TV in my room to find out the front desk clerk was killed there nite before in a robbery. Right where I was standing 24 hrs later.

I am wondering if they might remove these cabins physically from the ship. I may not be remembering this correctly but there was a fire in a Princess cabin some years ago (Star?) and because of the extent of the damage to the cabin unit, it was removed and replaced with another. Of course, this would probably not happen until dry dock. I remember that my DH and I were fascinated that each cabin was a separate unit that could be removed and replaced.

Unless serious physical damage to electrical or mechanical connections in the cabin, which I doubt there would be, most likely soft goods would be removed and replaced (cushions, mattress, carpet), a thorough cleaning and possibly ozone generator run in the cabin; but I doubt highly removing the cabin unit and slotting in another.

I'm friends with the neighbor of the family involved. The FBI is sending the girls home this morning. They're completely wrecked by this and have now lost both parents since the father is (obviously) in custody. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. They will need a lot of love, support, and therapy to help recover from this.

We are sending our prayers to the 3 young daughters . They have lost both parents and will have to remember this for the rest of their lives . Seeing their Father kill their Mother. Horrible tragedy.

People shouldn't worry about refunds or OBC. Be thankful for your blessings.

I had one of those cabins and yes, the did remove the entire area and replace them. They had to as structurally they were all so badly damaged.

I'm sure this time around they will replace and simply re-do the rooms since there is nothing wrong with the room itself. As it's a crime scene, they will out of inventory for a while. But they will clean the rooms like they do any crime scene and replace what needs to be replaced.

I know what you mean by "structurally damaged", but there is actually nothing structural about the cabins. As noted, they are modular units, and are not really heavily fastened to the ship's structure. I really doubt they would remove cabins since it is only a couple of them, and you have to cut an access to get them out. You can re-panel a cabin in place, it is an extreme pain in the butt, but it is doable. You have to remove the panels in the reverse order that they were installed, so if the damaged panel is the first one, you have to "unzip" the whole cabin to get to it.

And would you still have stayed at that motel had you known ahead of time?

It's doubtful.

A cruise ship is quite different but posting cabin numbers is something that most people should know before selecting a cabin, whether it been cleaned thoroughly or totally replaced.

I can't imagine what those little girls are going through.

You know they have been taken off the ship and whomever is on the "emergency call" that we all have to list are also having a hard time dealing with this -- and they may be the ones who have to fly to Juneau to get those little girls.

And those little girls will never see either their mother or father again.

So sad for so many people.

We have family members onboard the Emerald and their cabin is two away from the scene. Apparently, there was a large group of family traveling together occupying several cabins. We talked to my brother in law a bit ago and he said it was horrible. People were screaming and running up and down the halls covered with blood trying to get help. My BIL and 4 other men were getting ready to storm the cabin, but then security showed up.

can your family members let me know which room number this happened? my parents are going to be on the same exact itinerary next month, and they want to avoid that room if possible.

I will probably get flamed for this, but there a cultural and superstitious issues and reasons why people may want to know this information. It is indisputably tragic for the family, but there is a reason that there usually are no 13th floors in most hotels (and I believe on Princess ships), and in California, at least, there is an obligation to report a death on the property prior to selling, even if by nothing more than by natural causes. If people want to avoid these cabins, either due to culture, superstition or otherwise, it really is none of our business. But they have a right to know. There are people that will probably avoid the Emerald Princess completely because of this. You may think it silly or macabre, but it's really none of your business. I am so sorry for the family, especially their young children. I will bet, this is not the first time for this family. It's just the worst time.

Was anyone watching the NBC news this evening?

I saw a picture of the mother and father with 3 adorable children sitting at a very long table -- several tables pushed together.

Were there any other family members on board? Maybe it was a picture from somewhere else?

Earlier in this thread someone onboard (or who has a relative onboard) stated that they were with a family group with several cabins.

To kill someone because they laughed at you sounds like the beginning of some kind of breakdown or very heightened emotional state ...not normal for sure .I.m wondering what he struck her with or repeatedly struck her ....that there should be so much blood .The whole thing sounds like a very confusing matter .....out of control rage ...poor woman

I feel for the kids who saw this ...were they involved in trying to stop him ,The tragedy beyond this womans death is that those poor children have neither mother or father left to care for them ..plus the memory of that dreadful murder ....poor poor kids .they will need lots of support and counselling

My heart goes out to that family , anyone on ship affected by this and the rest of us who love cruising but need to remeber sometimes it really goes bad ....

Safe returns to all

A news story linked earlier stated that the weapon was a bunk ladder. Head wounds bleed horrendously and he tried to drag her to the balcony and back (according to other reports), this leads to blood being spread all over.

Those who wanted to know the cabin number had links to follow to get that information.

As a number of posters that they did not want to know, there was no need to post the numbers directly in the thread.

Oh give me a break. It was posted in the affidavit and the article - among other online sources, I'm sure.

The thread was about a crime committed on a cruise ship - what is being called a murder. The scene of the crime is an essential part of the story. You have to expect that at some point where the crime took place will be posted.

What if it happened at the pool? In the Casino? The dining room? Would you complain then?

If you didn't want to know then you shouldn't be reading this thread or any coverage.

But don't blame the poster - that's just absurd.

I read that the family was in two adjoining minisuites. A family of 5 would have 3 and 2, and in a mini, the 3rd would be in the sofabed, so not sure that was accurate.

Not sure of this either, but I did read they had their daughter celebrating her high school graduation - and she is 18. The pictures I saw of the family showed the parents, and pixelated heads of three teens, no small children.

Still tragic for them, in any case.

Sorry, but people who do not want to know details shouldn't be reading this thread anyhow. It's only right that people know what the numbers were so they can be forewarned and request another room. If they prefer to live in the dark then they should stay off of the internet in general. (especially CC where details of anything imaginable is posted)

btw- it is public knowledge, like it or not.

Thanks for your honesty. I appreciate the fact that the cabin numbers are easy to find.on this thread without being redirected and having to search. I personally would not want to be in any of those cabins if I go on that ship again. I think you are doing the right thing by sharing the cabin numbers.

I just watched NBC news, and saw a pic of a large family group seated for dinner. But it was not the victim and her family, it was the family of the witness who they showed next (Brian Beckstrom) via videophone. Same guy in both. The reporter said, "Brian Beckstrom was on board with his family when he stumbled upon the scene."

Very well said. Had a distraught client with an Emerald booking for September in a Dolphin mini call today worried I had booked her in one of these cabins. Now, she is actually on the other end of the ship, and I doubt the cabins of note would be back in inventory that soon anyway, but she has every right to know if hers' is one of the affected cabins and the right to either accept(and be upgraded) or have me move her if that was the case.

I especially appreciate and agree with the last sentence of your post.

I can see both sides of that argument. I definitely don't see a strong compelling need to post such information anywhere. However having said that I don't see a strong compelling need to censor a public discussion about a matter of public interest.

That sure is reasonable. However, I don't think posting something like "For those who want to know, the cabin numbers are posted here at this link..." is censorship. In fact, I will do you one better. I will memorialize that affidavit on my personal website so that in the event it is removed from previously linked sites, it will still be available to this thread. Here ya go:

https://mrose.org/cc/emerald-incident-affidavit/

See - no censorship!

That's how things are done when respect for everyone participating remains your chief motivation for posting.
