Very late flight out of Ft. Lauderdale

Anyone have any ideas of what we can do for many hours after getting off the Regal in Ft. Lauderdale, our flight is not until 7 pm

We thought about the Princess excursion, but the 4 hour one takes us only till 1 pm, but the good thing is we don't have to handle luggage. We thought about leaving luggage in the Ft. Lauderdale airport storage, but we wouldn't leave valuables. Does anyone have any other ideas where we don't need to handle luggage and "hang out" somewhere in Ft. Lauderdale.

I would rent a car and drive down to Miami. It's a straight shot to downtown Miami. About 22 miles.

Here is a great local Ft Lauderdale company. They will pick you up at the port and drop you off at the airport.

Their office is right off US 1 halfway between the port and the airport.

We rented a car, headed out to see some horse racing...

And then had an early dinner at GG's in Hollywood and watched a beautiful sunset. (It was November, so the sun set early enough for us to watch it and still make a 7:00 flight.)

Check to see if your airline and your departure time qualifies for EZ Check. You sign up on board. With EZ Check you place your main luggage outside your cabin the evening before and pick it up at the baggage claim area when you disembark your plane. Without luggage you can wander around Ft. Lauderdale, by taxi, Uber or using the Sun Trolley which stops just outside the port on SE 17th St. You can also take the Water Taxi ride. The loop is about 90 mins with stops where you get off and on. The dock is also just outside the port gate next to the Hilton Marina hotel.

If you have luggage, consider a car rental. If you wish to stay in the FT. Lauderdale area there are lots of sites, such as the beach area, downtown riverwalk area, Everglades boat rides, and Sawgrass Mills Mall. You can also visit South Beach in Miami which is about a 45 min drive one way.

We did the water taxi. It was a great day. We did EZ check for the bags (United Flight) and had fun for the day in Hollywood. I had originally thought our 6 PM flight was too late, but it ended up being enough time to have to rush back to the airport. We enjoyed it.

Check out Alamo car rental. They run a free shuttle to the port and can pick you up and take you to the airport where you get your car rental. Then enjoy the day, when you want drop off the car and walk to your gate.

We normally arrive a day early and rent a car, the next morning we drop the car and take the free shuttle to the port. They give us a ticket for the return shuttle when the cruise is over.

It's cheap.

Get a day room up to 4 persons, free shuttle.

We did the day room (above) and it worked out well. The hotel wasn't the ritz but they had free shuttle from ship to hotel then hotel to airport. We relaxed by the pool, watched tv, had dinner and showered before heading to airport. And no stress about luggage.

We didn't feel like renting a car and driving around all day or shopping, and you really can't do the beach since you have no where to change, plus parking can be a problem. We were looking for an easy solution and it fit the bill.

OP - this question comes up almost daily on the Florida Departures Board and occasionally on the the Ask a Cruise Question Board. Here's a recent thread that includes much of the excellent advice you have already received:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2533633. If you decide to get a day room, there are two other alternatives (much nicer hotels) mentioned - the Riverside Inn and the Hampton Inn Las Olas/Downtown.

Just did this. First, put your luggage in Bags to Go, there are two of these luggage storage areas at FLL...they will hold your luggage for $7/per piece. Then go outside and look for the Sun Trolley that leaves every hour on the hour. It will take you to the Fort Lauderdale River Walk and Las Olas Blvd area for FREE, just a $1 tip for the driver. Then take the FREE water taxi to Las Olas for some great shopping and a nice lunch.

See http://www.suntrolley.com for more options. Enjoy.

you did not tell us how you got such a late flight? We booked a flight with AA, they cancelled our flight and put us on a later flight, we fly out of Miami. I called AA told them I wanted an earlier flight and got rebook to something like what orginally booked.

We ran into this same problem on our upcoming cruise. We decided to take the Everglades air boat excursion, then the bus will take us to Miami to catch an earlier flight. Have you looked into flying out of Miami? We did the Everglades excursion last October and we enjoyed it. Didn't have to worry about luggage because it stays on the bus until we get to the airport.

You can take a taxi to the airport, rent a car and go to either Biscayne National Park or Everglades National Park. Another idea would be to drive down to the Florida Keys. You probably won't have the time to make it all the way to Key West but you would have time to visit a couple Keys and have a leisurely lunch.
