Chilean ports summer 2017/2018 valparaiso or san antonio ??

Recommended Posts

All South America cruises stop normally in Valparaiso port for disembarking or embarking of their passengers,,,,please take note that next summer season 2017/2018 , two cruises companies, Norwegian Cruises and Carnival Cruises will begin their operations in San Antonio Port about 100 Kms south of Valparaiso port . Valparaiso Port and San Antonio port are the main ports in the central part of Chile,,,,You must check if your cruises begin/stop at Valparaiso Port or San Antonio, ,,,both ports are about 120 Km from Santiago capital city,,,,best Regards :D

We are on the Norwegian Sun on 02/17/18 supposedly departing from Valparaiso. Someone on our thread has also mentioned there is a possible change to San Antonio for embarkation. I called NCL Reservations today and asked which port our cruise departs from. I said I knew that last April NCL had used San Antonio at least once due to a union strike in Valparaiso, and I asked her if all of the 2018 cruises would depart from San Antonio.

She also knew about last April's port change, but she said that as of now, the 2018 cruises will indeed depart from Valparaiso. She said if there was to be any change, my travel agent would be notified, I would be notified, and there would also be an announcement on the NCL website.

Please let us know how you are getting this information, since it contradicts what NCL told me today.

Thank you.

Interesting. I checked Oceania's SA itineraries. They all seem to say San Antonio for Santiago, instead of Valparaiso...into 2019 cruises. O's in the same corporate group as NCL.

Dang...with a San Antonio embarkation, including Valparaiso into a precruise stay looks difficult and San Antonio does not seem to have much of a tourism infrastructure.

We're not going until 2019 (NCL) so I can wait to see how this plays out, but if embarkation remains in San Antonio, we'll probably spend less time in Chile pre cruise. I had been thinking a few days in Santiago and a couple nights in Valparaiso (the latter looked charming).

Thank you for the heads up!!!

Hello,

I am have been doing some research about transportation between Valparaiso and San Antonio, and I do not see any direct bus service. Do you know if there is any, and if so, which companies?

Thanks in advance.

,Next summer season 2017/2018 the Norwegian and Carnival Cruises Companies will begin their operations in San Antonio Port. Other Cruises Companies maintains their operations in Valparaiso port.

San Antonio Port don't have a tourism infrastructure, you must make the arrangements to go to Valparaiso port that is an old city that has many places to see. Valparaiso is located about 100 Kilometers north of San Antonio, about an hour and a half driving. Valparaiso is declared patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO . Both cities have good options for lunch especially fish and seafood. For transfer or tour you could contact privatedriversantiago@hotmail.com and organize a program for your group, If you go to Valparaiso you can see also Viña del Mar city , in Spanish the winery of the sea,,,,, our Garden city,,,,,Have a nice trip and cruise,,,,,best regards

This is very disappointing to hear. We are on a Buenos Aires to Los Angeles cruise with Princess in Feb/2018. I was just advised this morning by a tour operator in Valparaiso, with whom we had a great tour organized, that he had heard also that Princess would now be docking in San Antonio. It doesn't look like there is much to do there at all.

I have heard nothing from Princess regarding this :(

See the Valparaiso ship schedule in post #6. The original post said Norwegian and Carnival cruises and neither are on the Valparaiso ship schedule. Plenty of Carnival Corporation lines are still on the schedule in addition to Princess (Emerald and Island): HAL, Seabourn, P&O, and Cunard. I hope that is true for you - we really enjoyed our day in Valparaiso last winter and it is a much better location for folks arriving a day or two early or staying a day or two later.

Thanks, Capriccio - I did check out the schedule and can see the Emerald Princess on there as well as the Island and a few other Carnival Corp ships. But.... the schedule was last updated Aug 18 :(

From the newspaper article linked here, it was only a few days ago that Carnival said they were moving ships too. I'm hoping it doesn't happen, but it looks like there's every chance it will. I was really looking forward to seeing Valparaiso.

Thank you, Valparaiso. I just hope that San Antonio is set up to easily handle passengers getting on/off ship especially if they're new to the game.

But your post has made me feel better :)

Princess is now missing from the Valparaiso port schedule yet everything one the Princess website still shows Valparaiso. Hoping they make an announcement soon so we can adjust our plans. Was a reason given for making this change?

I just got a notice from HAL that my cruise will now end in San Antonio instead of Valparaiso. I'm disappointed as I was planning to spend the day in Valparaiso before heading to the airport in Santiago on the same day. Can anyone tell me whether there is a bus service from San Antonio to downtown Santiago? I plan to spend the day there now.

I just got notice from HAL, too, but my November cruise will now start in San Antonio. My travelling companion wants to overnight in San Antonio the night before the cruise, but I'm struggling to find a hotel that's not just a budget place on the beach. Has anyone stayed at San Antonio before and can recommend a hotel either in or near town?

For good hotels in the city of San Antonio ( near the port):

Hotel Del Pacifico & Casino San Antonio

Hotel Sonesta San Antonio

About 45 minutes from the port:

Hotel La Casona Matetic Wineyard

Hi. We are on the ISLAND for whole trip around S.A. Thus far, Princess, has been officially status quo, but another CC member posted to their social media and got a "we're working on these trips" response.

As a local expert, can you recommend/suggest best independent means to get to Valparaiso from San Antonio port? We will also want to spend some time - maybe 1/2 day - seeing city highlights. You also mentioned Vina del Mar, which we are also aware of as a seaside resort. Looks like a very long nice beach too. We won't have seen a nice resort type beach for a long time - given our excursions and cooler weather south of you.

Any advice is appreciated. I do realize that many or all of the tour operators servicing the ships in Valp today will turn and offer similar tours out of San A.

I will be on HAL on the Zaandam beginning March 3, 2018 in Buenos Aires and scheduled to stop in Valparaiso on March 17. Just received notice this morning that we will now be stopping in San Antonio. From what I have read it seems that it is still feasible to do a tour of Valparaiso from the San Antonio port. Does that sound logical? Thanks for your help.

Helen

Does anyone know why the change is being made? It appears that Valparaiso is a much better choice for tourism so I'm wondering what has prompted this apparent change.

Thanks

Cheers!

We are leaving on the Zaandam - HAL on 9/281/17 and we have now been officially changed from Valparaiso to San Antonio - we don't know why - it just is. All Valparaiso shore excursions have been deleted, and nothing new has been put in its place - if any one has any idea why, would love to pass it on to a bunch of angry cruiserx - thanks

Looks like they may have built the brand new facility and forgot about the other aspects needed to attract and maintain customers. Hope they can get act together.

It's a bit of a pain for us as this is a stop on our S.A. cruise and we are going to visit Valparaiso city and now have additional travel time to/from.

I'm sure it is also about the money, always is. Carnival Corp. likely is getting a better deal at cheaper rates from the city of San Antonio than from Valparaiso. I doubt the cruise lines care about their passenger experiences and inconveniences on land before and after a cruise. They only care about their own bottom line.

Celebrity is sticking to Valparaiso so if I ever do a Cape Horn cruise again I may choose Celebrity if I want to visit Valparaiso as part of my vacation.

Princess is now showing San Antonio instead of Valparaiso on their website.

Princess has pushed back departure from San Antonio for Emerald Princess Feb.14 by an hour, now leaving at 6:00pm instead of 5:00pm. Princess has sent an email notification making the change official.

I'm happy to hear that - that might allow our Valparaiso tour operator a bit more breathing room if he can still make the tour work.

I haven't received anything from Princess yet :(

Does anyone how to get to Valparaiso from San Antonio?

Do a Google map and you will see the distance and estimated driving time.

You can get a taxi, van, bus service. Rent a car. Lots of choices.

We are doing a private tour in Valparaiso, so it is more costly because they have to pick us up and return us to San Antonio. But the up-charge was quite reasonable and competitive with us doing it ourselves.

I have always had it as 6:00pm. The impact is the next port, La Serena where arrival and departure are both 1 hr later than before (same time in port). This makes sense as the ship has further to travel overnight than from Valparaiso.

I will be willing to admit it may have been 5:00pm way back before Princess decided to sell segments (as in when we booked the 60-day trip), but with San Antonio being a segment break, the extra hour gives more time for boarding passengers to catch the ship. So, I believe it has been 6:00pm for some time now.

I received notification that HAL Zaandam for 2017November17 has been changed from Valparaiso to San Antonio.

We've already booked our hotel and tour for Valparaiso. Now we have to add a transfer from Valparaiso to San Antonio.
