Cuba Update 9/29

Cuba may be in jeopardy. I just heard on National news that the American Embassy is being evacuated. They think there may be some sonic device making people sick. It is not known who is up to this, or if there are any more in Cuba. Americans have been warned NOT to travel to Cuba.

Don't know what the cruise lines will do.

Canadian's who work in their embassy are among those affected; and, both US Embassy employees and Canadians have been affected in their residences!

Thanks for the update................this has also spread to hotels, restaurants where anyone could stay or eat.

The reason I posted this thread was the evening news had a shot of the Empress in the background as the story was read.

As with just about any other sensationalist story, one should worry about getting hurt in a car accident first, especially in Havana where virtually none of those photogenic 50s cars have seat belts..While virtually nothing has been said about it in the news, Cuba, including Havana, was just as devastated by Irma as some of the other Caribbean islands. Worry about being able to find a decent excursion, not some sonic attack.

Many medical experts say that the symptoms described aren't caused by a sonic device. So our wonderful government doesn't know who, why and how these symptoms were caused. As a result, "the sky is falling, the sky is falling" and don't go to Cuba. I really don't recall anyone posting that they had been invited to an embassy staffer's house or went to a hotel other than for a drink.

Sure. But I have no desire to give aid and comfort to the enemy (who might be attacking my diplomats) by spending money on the island.

So the poor people of Cuba are your enemy? And you also do not believe in tipping. Sad, very sad.

What does tipping have to do with Cuba? That thread was closed but you wish to re-hash the same debate again. I suspect it is a way to minimize my views. It will not work. I will not be deterred. If the Cuban people/government are indeed attacking US diplomats then, yes, why should I (a patriotic American) visit that country?

I never even posted on that thread so I have nothing to rehash. I never even finished reading it, but I just wanted to bring up your uneducated opinion which carries over in this case. I will bet that you never even sent $1 to the hurricane victims.

Again, why are the poor cuban people your enemy?

Open your eyes. The poor people of Cuba are not the beneficiary of your tourist dollars. Why do you think the Cuban military generals and communist government officials are living such a high life while average Cubans are struggling financially and dreaming about coming to US by the boatloads.

They are not my enemy. In fact, I tend to like socialism. However, the term poor implies some sort of paternalism that is unnecessary and condescending. It is also quite meaningless. What you may consider poor, I may not. In any case, I do not consider the Cuban people my enemy. I consider anyone who attacks my diplomats to be my enemy. Once I have seen proof that this attack was not from some entity in Cuba then I will travel to Cuba and see the "poor" Cuban people.

I suggest you read Marco Rubio's opinion of the incident:

I do not think that Cuba has the technology or resources to protect any Embassy or hotels...they can't even protect themselves. Why would any country even think that?

We were booked to visit on the Empress, but cancelled when Trump made his speech. We were also booked through a private tour company that was 1/4 of the price of Royal's for the same excursion.. The speech seemed to insinuate that we would NOT be able to do our own thing and wanted to interact with the "locals" and give them our money directly.

I do not think this is the time to visit Cuba and glad that we cancelled prior to final payment. I still want to visit, but do not want to be part of any political or dangerous situations.

Edited to add that I've never heard of, or spoken to any one who thinks the average Cuban is or thinks that they are rich. I do not understand your thinking.
