Salt flats without a guided tour

Our ship is going to be calling on Bonaire this coming March, and we're looking at renting a golf cart to tour the island a bit. However, we'd really like to see the salt flats that so many of the guided tours are advertising.

If we go alone without a guided tour, are there independent tours that depart of the salt flats / are there tour guides on hand, or is this really something you need to book a guided tour to see properly?

You are able to do the salt flats on your own in a golf cart. However, there are no tour guides on site - or independent of the operators. So, you can definitely see them yourself but you will miss out on all of the information they provide. Something you could Google for sure - and if you go alone I'd recommend your doing so before visiting. Have fun.
