Ocean Medallions Vacation Update Direct From Princess

See below for the email received from Princess yesterday

Hello everyone,

I’m writing to provide you an update on the launch of Ocean Medallion Vacations, now underway aboard Regal Princess.

Although our original plan was to launch the full Ocean Medallion experience onboard Regal Princess beginning November 2017 and then on other ships throughout 2018, we have instead decided to take a phased approach and introduce the enhanced experiences to a small number of cabins on Regal and proceed until we have successfully activated the entire ship.

Ocean Medallion is very sophisticated technology that hasn’t existed prior to now and we are continuing onboard testing to activate and refine it, hence we want to get it right on our journey to a full ship launch. Once full activation of Regal Princess is complete and we’re satisfied with the elevation of our guest experiences, we will then look to launch Ocean Medallion on more ships.

Over the last few weeks we’ve been communicating this update to our travel agent partners and guests who are booked on ships previously announced to become Ocean Medallion enabled in 2018. We apologize for any disappointment this news may cause you or your clients who had hoped to enjoy Ocean Medallion on one of our other ships. However, we are confident that once your clients experience Ocean Medallion, it will be more than worth the wait and exceed their expectations.

In closing, our Guest Experience operations team assures us that the product and service delivery onboard Regal Princess, Royal Princess, Caribbean Princess and Island Princess continue to be the premium experience your clients have come to expect and they will have a memorable vacation.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

So finally they have come to grips with reality. Changing a ship to host ***** is a huge undertaking and one they did not have experience implementing. I believe sales got the advantage of the IT group and way oversold it. I have seen this over and over again where sales does not listen to the technical people. This new approach is a lot more logical. They need to get one ship up and running on ***** before spreading it to another ship. That way they have found a lot of the problems before trying to replicate *****. Welcome to the real world.

If you're on other princess ships ... good luck?

No, the plan is to make it across the fleet eventually. At first all ships were to have it by the end of 2020 but now that has probably slipped. The four were chosen to be the first to get ***** originally.

The big plan for Carnival Corp is to have all of their 100+ ships using the new technology eventually. They chose Princess to be the first cruise line of their corporate group to implement it which Princess has labeled *****.

Marketing is always full of BS. That's almost the definition of marketing. They always promise the moon but then they aren't the ones who have to actually implement the changes. Any time I see a note using the phrase or hear someone actually say they are "excited" about some sort of change I know it is marketing/human resources hype from people who have absolutely no clue what it will take to fulfill their promises. The fallout when one works in IT is horrendous.

The sentence I quoted -- had nothing to do with the greatness of ocean medallion.

I read it as "even without ocean medallion, these 4 ships will continue to offer a great experience"

Which, of course, made me wonder -- what about the other ships?

Who needs *****?? My cruises have been very nice without it. I'm sure they still will be in the future without *****. ;)

I doubt if anyone actually needs an ***** but it would make the trip that much more enjoyable if everyone had them.

  • Opening the cabin door.
  • Finding others if they want to be found.
  • Ordering drinks.

WOW! That looks like it could have been posted by me. I think we see things the same way here.

Well said. Having also been on the implementation end, the words coming out of marketing was always outrageous and they would then blame the implementation people with not delivering when they were told on day one that it was beyond wishful thinking.

I would love to open the door without having to use the card when I'm carrying a split of champagne, a champagne flute or two, and a large glass of OJ. I would love to know if my wife had already left the Knitters and Natters meeting before making the trek to find her rather than making the trip and then finding out she had left already. I also would love for all bartenders to know in advance that my Bloody Mary should be made "extra spicy" or that my Gin and Tonic should be made with Tanqueray Gin. I would like to not have to flag down a waiter in the theater in order to get a drink. I would like to have it crystal clear to all bartenders that I have the beverage package so that when I get a drink in the theater the bartender in the dang casino wouldn't charge me and make me have to go to passenger services every darn time to have the charge removed. I would like to have the ship "know" people have disembarked or embarked at ports so we don't have to listen to endless announcements as they look for the people who somehow didn't get scanned back onboard. I would like to not have to dig out my card when returning to the ship when I already have enough stuff in my hands to deal with. It's the little things... :D

Never had a problem using the key card.

Don't care about finding others - we tell each other where we're going or go together.

Don't drink alcohol.

So....***** does nothing for me. Bet I'm not the only one who doesn't need *****. :D

You've really never came back to your cabin with a coffee in one hand and something in the other & then had to find your key card to open the door?

My wife & I do things separately & occasionally have to fine each other so that would be a great advantage.

Even though some think keeping one's key card on a lanyard around one's neck looks less than classy, I never have to wonder where my card is or fumble to dig it out of a pocket, purse, wallet, or, heaven forbid, bra () when arriving at my cabin door.

Neither is a wrist band or belt clip which is still better than having to insert a card with full hands.

I will tell you it was a nice thing once it was finally working well on our sailing to not have to fumble to the door to open it when coming back from the IC with coffee. You still had to press down on the door handle but at least you didn't have to get your card out, put it in the door slot and then open the door.

I received my notice yesterday that we will not have Ocean Medallion for our cruise on the Island Princess December of 2018. I was surprised they decided it that far in advance, but I understand why. I am a bit disappointed because I like new technology but no way am going to let it ruin my fantastic cruise.

I can live with pushing the handle down but it will sure make things easier not to have to reach in my pocket for that card with my hands full.....and this happens at least 2 times every morning with coffee & pastries.

I suppose the people who utilize room service just can't appreciate the convenience of the feature.

I did like not having to put the key in the door and having the light flash green so I could open the door as I walked up. It was also fun to walk into the shops and have the staff greet me by name. And being able to tap the Medallion to a slot machine in the casino to play was cool, although that also worked with the keycard. But what I loved most were things that everyone could take advantage of, Medallion or not. Princess has chosen to enhance some of the experiences on board in conjunction with Medallion such as rolling out the awesome Medallion Net and improving the embarkation / disembarkation processes. Although it will be fun to experience the rest of the Medallion features when they are ready, it will be great when the rest of these features are rolled out fleetwide.

How quickly did the door respond when approaching?
