Is the Steakhouse worth it?

Recommended Posts

1. No suit, nicely dressed - no shorts

2. You receive a bottle of wine - not sure if you get a choice

3. Gratuity is included but feel free to offer additional tip for great experience.

Thanks so then in your opinion what time would you choose on the first night and this is for the Vista!

If you enjoy the MDR food, then NO..the steakhouse isn't worth it for you. If you're not impressed with the MDR offerings, then the Steakhouse might thrill you.

I really enjoy the MDR food for sure however I believe the Steakhouse is more than worth it. The food is better and the setting is very nice. For the price you get a perfectly cooked meal with great service. Also, the setting, the relaxation, how quiet it is....ahhhhhh... worth every penny even if you like the food in the MDR.

The first time we tried the steakhouse we loved it so much we ensured we attended the cooking demo the next day and then booked another reservation for that cruise. Since then it has become a tradition that we book the steakhouse for the first evening every cruise.

While you can order Steakhouse Selections in the MDR, do pay the extra $15 and eat in the steakhouse. The experience and food are just incredible! Quieter atmosphere, even more dedicated service, and on the first night we tend to find it fairly quiet and very peaceful. Great way to unwind after all the traveling and excitement of getting on the cruise and setting the tone for a fabulous vacation.

I would normally say yes it's absolutely worth it. BUT since you said the GLORY i would pass. I've been to the steak house several times on other ships and the experience and food were phenomenal! This past february on the GLORY it was lackluster at best. Had surf and turf and the lobster was burnt. The filet was overcooked and they gave my wife a different menu than I had that didn't include all the desert options. Now on the Pride, Legend, Liberty and Dream it was to die for:cool::cool:.

yes, yes and yes, we ate there 2 nights ago and it was fabulous. You can not get a steak of that quality in the states for $35 ala cart. When you add, lobster bisque, or onion soup, crab cake, Caesar salad, you have a $100 per person meal at Ruth's Chris or Mortons. The service is excellent, atmosphere beautiful. We go at least 2 times every cruise. My wife's Chilean Sea bass was one of the best pieces of fish I ever tasted. My NY steak was cooked perfectly MR. enough said?

Maybe once upon a time the Steak Houses were on par with Ruth Chris or Morton’s (and they used to be cheaper). Now I’d put them on par with Logan’s... Still a decent meal and better than most of what’s in the MDR but I can have just as nice a meal at Logan’s for about $35 when I haven’t already paid for a pretty decent meal in a wonderful 2-story dining room.

Usually our TA will comp us a meal in a specialty so we’ll go but if not we’ll save the money for a nice dinner the night before the cruise.

You can 10 meals a day on the ship. What if you cabin fridge is more than 40 degrees? Where are you going to store your steak? A case of food poisoning could easily kill 2 days of your vacation. Why would I give a crap about your eating habits.

OMG. I asked a simple question regarding smaller portions & doggie bags. If you don’t have an answer just scroll on by. You are just as bad as riclop, but at least he uses shorter sentences.

No doggie bags, though I've heard of mixed results with taking the dessert to go.

Thank you Fryee for answering my question!

because it IS Texas Roadhouse quality at best.

Im totally ok with that. I like Texas Roadhouse and I still say the steakhouse is by far the best meal of the week! If I go on the first night, its nothing but disappointment in the MDR from there on out. The MDR food quality is getting so poor (Not to mention mediocre at best service on a good night). Ive seriously consider budgeting for specialty dining for 7 nights.

What I would like to know is WHO do you know at Del Friscos that gives you a steak dinner for 35.00 :) Last time I was there, I recall it costing me about 3X that much. You got a Prime cut of steak and my steak on Magic might not have been quiet as good but the service and ambiance was every bit as great as what I remember at Del Friscos, at a fraction of the cost.

It is my understanding that when they were called "supper clubs" they served aged USDA Prime steaks? I know that is no longer the case but Im ok with Choice. Its what I eat at home. Sometimes the loud, organized chaos in the MDR just gets old. Its nice they offer a quieter place with more personalized service and better food at a decent cost. Im glad its not for everyone and many people think its not worth it. You would never be able to get in the door if that werent the case :)

Maybe it's different on different ships but I dined in the steakhouse on the magic twice on my January cruise. Took my left overs both times. They plated it up with a lid and sent rolled silverware with a steak knife.

a better question is when do YOU want to eat? We eat late 8:30-9, some people eat at 6, it's your choice

I understand food is subjective, but the steaks are Prime, not choice and to compare it to Texas Roadhouse is ridiculous.

It takes about 2 - 2 1/2 hours for dinner. Other than that, plan to go at a time that you like to eat taking into account any shows you may want to see.

Just a note about the Vista - We were on last August and the Steakhouse was very popular. If you can, make reservations ahead of your cruise.

I expierenced the SAME issue on the Glory in the steakhouse. We usually eat 2-3 Times per cruise I. The steakhouse (casino perk) but I was soooo disappointed in the food and service there. My meal on the Glory was really poorly cooked and my server was very rude. Thinking it was a “one off” night we went back later in the cruise and had a different server (who was more pleasant but very under trained ) but the food was not nearly up to the quality I am used to in the steakhouse. I’m thinking it is a Glory thing.. this was last November.

As far as “value” from a purely “money worth” yes, as far as “worth paying extra since other food is included” that is subjective. But I say give it a try and see. We also love Cucina (for $15) and JiJi’s as alternatives to the MDR experience. It’s a “value” for us as we love the experiences.

I was wondering if paying for chops grille on Harmony of the seas is worth it. Travelling with a senior, three children, and two adults

Probably best to ask someone on the RCCL board......

Exactly!!!! Or, Morton's, Ruth Chris', Sullivan's, Peter Luger's and Bern's ( my personal favorite!)

Steakhouse is worth trying for yourself - experiences here in this thread range from the best ever to wouldn’t feed it to my dog; your personal experience is what counts. Try it - you’ll probably like it. If not, now you know. But most of all, ENJOY your cruise.

I think the experience of the steakhouse is well worth the $35....Ambiance and service well worth it. The steak is ok, not great. A cruiseline steakhouse steak is NOT in the same league as a Del Frisco, so bad comparison there. Earlier poster said it right when he compared it to Texas Roadhouse

We ate there for the first time thanksgiving day 2017 and I must say that I am hooked. I have already scheduled it again for my birthday cruise October 2018. I cannot eat that much food in one sitting but it is still a great meal for me. I too will need to take some to go and often do in the mdr for when I get hungry in a few hours. For 35.00, it is a great value and a nice thing to do while on the cruise. If I were on a tight budget when I cruise, (sometimes we are) I might skip it. The MDR and buffets more than satisfy us but I want my husband to try it at least once. He might decide it’s not worth the extra, that will be his choice. I think it is. It depends on what things you like. Some gamble, some drink, some buy pictures, we do all three of those things but also enjoy a great meal. Before I went, I always thought it was a waste since the MDR made us happy but I was wrong. It is a great addition to the cruise.

. BTW—-the cruise in 2020 is for our 50th Anniversary and we will have about 25 people sailing with us, so going to a specialty is definitely out.

I would go to Cucina del Capitano for 15.00 pp on the Magic. Contact them and they could set up a section for your large group which would be much better than anything they could possibly set up for you in the MDR. And the 15.00 pp cost is very reasonable for everyone to celebrate your 50th.

And if you're still against it because of the cost, then inquire about a sea day lunch in the same venue, which would be free.

Was considering booking the Steakhouse and pick up the complimentary wine on night one. Is the Steakhouse really worth the price, compared to the MDR I already paid for? Have never tried it, curious what veterans of the Steakhouse think. Does it vary from ship to ship, or just changes the name? Going on the Glory if that's the case.

Obviously you are asking for opinion, so here is mine. Absolutely it is worth it. I find it on par with Ruth's Chris and that meal costs us $250 after tip, minimum, to have appetizers, salad, steak and dessert. So for a mere $70 I go from Ruby Tuesday quality food to Ruth's Chris.
