What I don’t understand is how that surprised CCL/PCL management
by overhyping a new unproven system.
Marketing was obviously given marching orders to be sure pax wanted to wear
the medallions. Be a real bummer if we all thought "Big Brother!" and left them
in our staterooms.
Being a new system just like when Princess@Sea was created some delays are not surprising to me on the first ship with OM.

What I don’t understand is how that surprised CCL/PCL management by overhyping a new unproven system.

The Royal Princess was promoted as having OM in January yet we received notification that it will not be on our Spring 2019 cruises & they hope it’ll be available in the future.
Wow, that’s surprising that they already know it won’t be ready on the Royal in a year. I just can’t believe how much they overhyped this medallion system when it’s clearly so not ready.

Same here. We are on the Royal in April 2019 and thought even with these hiccups on the Regal, they would have it all resolved by our April 2019 cruise. We got the same email in December 2017 telling us no OM for April 2019. I was looking forward to OM but now I’m not so sure. Edited by mthomp5

We’ll never know for sure who approved the overhyped marketing however I prefer a company who delivers as promised.

Even the passengers in those 160 cabins may not be using OM for the reasons expressed on this forum.

Here’s their statement emailed in December for our May 2019 cruise on the Royal:

“The creation of Ocean Medallion Vacations is an all-encompassing project that is currently being activated onboard another Princess ship. We had hoped to have it launched in time for your cruise aboard Royal Princess. However, we have identified refinements and enhancements that require more time for us to fully realize our aspirations to elevate the guest experience by way of this new technology. We hope you’ll experience Ocean Medallion on a future cruise with Princess. We apologize for any disappointment this news may cause for you”.

Apparently this advance notification was made to not feel the need to offer any compensation like they did for some Regal passengers.

Thanks for sharing that.

I guess refinements & enhancements are now code words for “we hope to actually make it work”!!
I get such a chuckle every time I read something new about this worthless "high tech" solution to opening a cabin door and purchasing items onboard!

I was on the last "non-OM" cruise, too. I knew things had gone haywire when they replaced the TV in our cabin and it was out for the next day and a half. It's crazy to think that after so many months they still don't have this working fully.

Or like the recent use of the word encouraging for requiring an earlier final payment: “encouraging guests to finalize their cruise bookings earlier”

What dictionary did they use where encouraging & requiring have the same definition.

I assume we all agree that OM roll out has been a disaster for Princess. Our next cruise is about a year out and don't really care one way or the other. I had one in December. It opened our door, worked in the casino and they knew when we were in the shops or at the bar and other areas since a circle with our face & name showed up on the iPad they had.

Didn’t do anything with the TV back when I used it.

We board the Regal tomorrow in an OM cabin. I will report back as to the usability of the OM and what works with it and what does not.

When at the M&G in January on the Regal and asked if it would be ready by April when I too am back on it tomorrow the staff looked at each other and seemed to smile..which I would now reinterpret as suppressed laughter I seem to remember that one said parts of the system had not yet been invented the technology was so new. The salesperson must have been really great to be able to get them to go for many muti million $ system that hadn’t been invented yet. Mike

It seemed the new timetable to have it functional shipwide was during the repositioning to the European market. Let's see if that happens then or during one of the subsequent voyages after the TA. We certainly hope it is a done deal before our December voyage.

Our first experience with OM is positive. Arrived at the port 7 minutes ago from our hotel to board for the Regal TA. Greeted by name as we walked to the line and were whisked away to another area, processed through and were sitting down in the Elite lounge 7 minutes later.

FWIW, When we were on the Regal in January I loved the new internet even without the OM in our room. We had a new WIFI modem in the room not down the hall, great connection. I could use my cruise card on a sensor by the public monitors around the ship to create an aviator for myself. Then when passing another monitor and touching my cruise card to the sensor my aviator would come swimming into view. I know big deal but most of the system IMHO is working, it just need a few gallons of polish. In the short term I see the issue of unlocking your door as the main obstacle to getting people happy. The rest of the things that they want it to do can be added and refined later.

Last time we sailed from Southampton, it took us a similar time to check in with the 'old' system. So no real advantage/benefit there.

The OM worked fine to open our door ... the first time. I will continue to update how it continues to work throughout the cruise. Easy to sign onto Medallion.Net which is available to all cruisers not just OM. It’s very fast.....at least right now.

The sales pitch had that type of monitor in your cabin. Everyone would set up aviator and give permissions to your group. As you moved around the ship, the OM would be picked up by multiple sensors. Your party was to has access to this info by way of ANY monitor on board and show your location. it was unclear if location was just a deck and area or triangulated to actual point on any deck.base ap
From info on this board the issue MAY NOT be the OM itself, but the MULTIPLE aps that have to interact with the OM system AND the other aps. There is a post from a pax that the primary ap had issues.

Thanks for the updates. Did you still have to show your cruise card and get photographed by security to get onboard or do they now read the Medallion at the security point?

Again from info still online. While doing personalizer, you actually take photo of your passport (no info about other types of I.D.). Their claim was you arrive at cruise center wearing OM. and go directly to security and board ship. There was no mention if I.D. photo is to be used or the cruise card photo system does another photo. Since there are people who will refuse to use OM I think the old machines will still be used to take everyone's photo at embarkation.

When we collected our medallion at the terminal we had our photo taken once for the medallion system and then again for the cruise card system.Hardly seems efficient or seamless!

We had our pictures taken at terminal then again when we got on the ship then after we weren't recognized in the system after 2 more pictures, they took our blue OM cards and gave us platinum cards because they couldn't get them to work.

I mentioned earlier that my biggest problem with program was that anytime I got near a public OM terminal (like waiting in line for dining room), my personal information (picture, name, cabin number) was available for anyone to see.

That’s horrible. Let’s hope that’s an unplanned issue and not a permanent feature.

It all sounds good... but please don't tell me I need an ipad or smart phone to access this... and you can do it from the Smart TV in your cabin......

As a cruise to us is time to switch OFF and relax..

I suspect it's available on smartphone/iPad, but I'd bet the rent money you can
get the Purser's desk to do it.

The Princess information stated pax downloaded a primary ap that is to be used to "upload" pax info into the OM system. Other aps are needed for other functions. From posts read this week, paxs having issues launching and using the primary ap. There is a question if additional aps even exist at this time.
