HAL boarding pass printing issue - you're not going to believe this!

Recommended Posts

I've been reading about all the problems people have had printing boarding passes, so I tried today to print ours for our upcoming cruise. I've tried everything suggested here, including different browers, etc. No luck.

I then called HAL and was told 1. I didn't know what I was doing. 2. My printer settings must be wrong (no, works just fine on everything else). 3. There are no problems with their website (the supervisor finally agreed that there have been "minor" issues). 4. No one has had any problems printing boarding passes (I told him that there were several posts here on Cruise Critic about just that, but he didn't want to hear it). 5. They could mail me boarding passes - for a $25.00 fee.

I think HAL just lost a customer.

Ouch. $25.00 fee! I've never been asked for my boarding pass upon check-in. If I can't print mine in late July so be it. I've already printed my luggage tags:)

The "customer service" person I spoke to first flat out told me "I can't do anything for you." When I suggested they could mail me the passes, that's when I was told $25.00 or no go. The supervisor was absolutely no help either and was clearly not interested in helping.

Lousy, lousy "service."

That’s terrible thanks for sharing.

I took both hard and electronic copies of our boarding passes to our Oosterdam sailing last October. When we got to the check-in desk I asked which version they wanted to see and they said they preferred the hard copy.

We leave May 1 and I printed the documents with no problem from the new site . I was relieved!

Happy you were able to print with no problems. A good sign you'll have a great cruise. :)

We could care less what HAL 'prefers'. Hard copy or soft copy boarding pass. We only care about what is acceptable.

HAL would probably prefer that we don't complain when our AC or plumbing is on the fritz. They would probably prefer that we spend more more in the casino when we avoid it like the plaque if it reeks of tobacco smoke. This is about us, not HAL.

We are customers. And we have lots of cruise ship choices. HAL should act like they understand this.

We had no issues accommodating their preference in document version since we came prepared and had both. And clearly both are acceptable..

No need to fuss or raise your blood pressure about printing anything on the HAL's website. The EZ solution is if you can't print, ask your friends or someone you know and have them print it for you. Most people have no problems printing and if you are having problems then something is wrong with your browser setting, it could be the popup, use Chrome instead of Explore and etc..If all else fails, clear all your cookies, history and that still doesn't work, get a new PC with at least Core I7 because if you can't print a basic document, your PC is old. I don't why know people get all upset for such a simple solution and raise the blood for what? I just think you guys are just having too much free time even responding to such topic that's nothing to do with cruising. It'd be more interesting if the topic is about interesting cruising ports or tours that can help people decide what to see and do in ports. Wasting 80 + pages of discussions for a printing issue? Wow, if I were an MOD here, I'd derailed this thread. Period.....

When you used to be able to print documents by simply clicking the print button, and now you have to go to a neighbor's house to find the right equipment, is is not called progress. It is called being stupid.

I’m one of the people here that could not print my luggage tags or cruise documents from the HAL website and went to a friends home to do so. My point to all this, from my perspective, is that I have been using a computer for the past 30 years or so and have never had a problem printing anything that I downloaded or was sent to me. That probably represented hundreds and hundreds of documents over the years. Why I could not print something from a company from which I have spent thousands of dollars from still baffles me.

I so agree on "stupid".

My friends couldn't print theirs. They had been trying for hours.

She called me and gave me her booking number and since I had already struggled with mine, I knew which surf method to use. But.....a booking number is a dangerous thing. She knew I was trustworthy but....

The randomness is one of the things that makes this so frustrating. I've printed numerous HAL boarding passes over the years, and until today I've never had a problem.

I thought about writing to management, but honestly, that seems like a waste of time; nothing leads me to believe they'd be responsive.

My plan remains to use the PDF downloaded to my tablet, and if they don't like that at embarkation, well then they can print me a boarding pass.

Why not just print the downloaded PDF? If you don’t have a printer connection, email it to yourself and print the emailed PDF.

Perhaps you haven't read all the posts about this. When this started, people were naming their OS and the various browsers they'd tried. It isn't just Chrome or Explore, and it has happened to people with new computers. See my other comments below.

Exactly! When so many people are having trouble, especially those who've printed their docs in the past, it seems the common problem in all of this is HAL. I can't believe that so many posters on these threads are so computer illiterate that they all are unable to do something that SHOULD BE simple.

It may not be the case here, but I've seen trouble from folks who haven't yet

switched mentality from "newest, shiniest Microsoft- or Apple-only" features to

impress their instructor, to "lowest common denominator" features to grab the

widest possible user base.

Well, after reading this thread, I thought I'd better try printing our boarding passes, since we leave in just over a month to Alaska. Shocked but pleased that our passes printed without a hitch. I simply turned off the ad-blocker before printing. The HAL site clearly states (as have several others) that not turning the blocker off will interfere with the document printing. They also have a line next to the boarding pass printing button: "having trouble printing your boarding pass? helpful hints" - something like that. So there definitely has been a big issue. Maybe someone actually fixed it! I don't have a wizbang new computer - just an older desktop with Chrome. Hope everyone else also has better luck now.

There's another solution to this is to use Microsoft's snipping tool and most office PC has this tool. All you have to do is click on the left side MS icon and you'll see a scissor picture icon and use that to snip out your document and copy to your word document then print. I don't think you guys have the right hardware so it's time for an upgrade.

The bottom line is people are afraid to learn new stuff and as you said, old mentality = I like to hang on with my analog TV because it still works. Yes, many people still hang on to their analog TVs. Live the life people, put the old hardware in the recycle bin or take it to the county recycle center. Do spend the $$$ to better your life because one should "never never" be frustrated or have sh/e blood raise for simply print a document.

Enjoy your life!!

What is your 'advice' for someone with a brand new Dell laptop using Firefox? and relatively new printer.

Uhhh... You're kidding, right?

If you want customers to willingly hand you THEIR money, you must cater to how

THEY wish to spend it according to what THEY think gives THEM the most pleasure,

and you must do so lest someone else gets handed that money.

In any event, thank you for so ably demonstrating just what I fear might be HAL's

webmeisters' mindset.

The issue is HAL not teaching us what we need to do when using this new website. When the button says print and the website refuses to print, it is HAL's obligation to (1) make it work as presented, or (2) teach us how to make it work.

This has nothing to do with being "afraid to learn new things". In fact that is an insulting conclusion.

Hello everyone - just stop and take a deep breath...as I said back in post #91, the printing of boarding passes works just fine now. Simply follow the directions on the page. They even have helpful hints next to the printing button.:)

Love to learn why HAL now has to explain how to fix what was previously not broken. Print meant print. Now it means take a tutorial to learn how to print. Bring back the snail mail boarding packet in the fake leather pouch. It was not that long ago, that is how you got your boarding documents.

When I try to print my luggage tags or boarding pass in Chrome, I get a "Insecure Content Blocked" warning. When I click on the "Get help with printing your boarding pass" link in Chrome, it takes me to a general FAQ that addresses everything but printing. It's redirecting to a different URL than the one that displays when you hover over the link. When I click on the same link in Edge, it shows me the page you were seeing with advice about how to make it work. In other words, just because you're seeing it work doesn't mean everyone is seeing it work.

That said, their advice is a workaround and not a solution. Modern websites should not require you to turn off ad or popup blockers to work. Poor programming is the cause of that. In addition to going against what most internet safety sources say, many people are likely trying to do this from work machines that may have the option to disable such blockers turned off at the user level.
