Drinking straws

Just off a 2-day preview cruise on Bliss.

NO straws at the bars. Not even upon request. A couple times when I ordered a mango meltdown, bartenders told me up front there were no straws.

Often I had a mango moustache as a result!

There were straws available in Starbucks. Also, I got a milkshake at Coco's, and it came with - you guessed it - a big ol' plastic straw.

On the Bliss now. You’ve just given me a reason to order a milkshake. I’ll recycle the straw for my mango meltdowns [emoji4]

There's plenty of articles out there if you Google them on the impact of straws on marine life and how the straws get there if you believe the only way for them to get there is by throwing them overboard.

Yep. You’ve convinced me. Banning straws will probably help halt climate change too..... although indirectly.

Banning plastic straws will never offset the effect of cow farts on the ozone. We are doomed anyway and as a result I am going to use all of the plastic straws I want. When I am done with each straw I will feed it to a puppy.

I don't know why it has to be a full on ban of straws. Why not ease into it, have a transition period. Make the straws available only by request. So those of us truly feel we want or need one can have one, and plenty of other people will say no thanks. Just like they try to get you to reuse your bath towels in hotels, but make it optional, the usage of straws should be optional and kept to the minimum (many drinks truly do not require a straw). There are biodegradable straws available, why can't they use those? Maybe they cost too much and they don't wanna absorb the cost. Lets face it, they are saving money by not giving out the straws, even if that's not the primary motive for doing so. They whole situation just stinks for a straw loving, sensitive toothed person like me. If ice touches my teeth, it's just over. So I guess my next cruise I'll need to pack my own straws, which is just incredibly lame. Will there someday be a ban on bringing your own straws too? Hopefully it doesn't come to that.

I got a mini version of one of the milkshakes, and it was plenty. I didn't see it on the menu but our server told us we could order it.

I am jealous of you! LOL

Such a beautiful ship. We had so much fun!

Wyland was onboard - don't know if he was staying for your cruise. Guy Harvey was too.

Tip: Go to The Cavern to see The Beatles tribute band -- and get there EARLY. It's a small venue and very, very popular. It was so much fun!

There will be straw-sniffing dogs as you pass through security!

My daughters will take their kids' reusable straws from DIsney World on the next cruise.

Do you think we'll see similar straws for sale onboard?

I can't believe this thread is 7 pages long about straws!

If it's that important just bring your own!

Why not?

To some people - those with sensitive teeth - it's important.

And significant enough that some bartenders warn up front that there are no straws when you order a frozen drink.

Whenever there is a change, people all want to weigh in on it. Or ridicule people weighing in.

I've seen it on so many issues.

Has NCL made an announcement I've missed? It would be much more effective for them to come out and announce their reasons.
I have no idea, I just posted what Celebrity is thinking of doing with regard to plastic bottles, not straws, responding to another poster who wondered why they didn't ban plastic bottles and NCL has nothing to do with Celebrity.

Why does NCL have to make an announcement that they are not giving out straws?

I'm on the NCL Jewel and just ordered a frozen Bushwhacker at the pool bar. The bartender brought it to me and apologized that there is no straw.

I thought at first he meant they ran out or just didn't have any, but he went on to explain that the company said to no longer give out straws.

It's not easy to drink a frozen drink without a straw.

And this is the third day. I had no issues in earlier days of getting a straw. I had to ask for one each time, but I got one.

So I'm not sure if it's just a pool bar thing or a shipwide policy.

To whom do I complain?

Americans alone use 500 million straws daily. So sorry your drink is hard to consume. You will get better at it or bring one reusable straw with you on your vacation. Little things to save the planet. One day at a time.

I have not read all the posts since there are so many, so I don't know if this has been brought up. Upon telling my daughter that they are doing away with straws on ships, she said that I should get a reusable straw and just put it on a lanyard. I bet all the people that hate lanyards would go nuts with this. Not only the ship card, but straws on lanyards too! I thought it was funny and wanted to share.

I was trying to point out that they could make an announcement that it was to help the environment......somewhere along the line of 'if you hang up your towel....'.

If they posted a notice to explain it might make it easier on the bartenders

Maybe the cruise line can put an announcement in the dailies, stating its "green" efforts include the elimination of straws in drinks.

Although Starbucks gives them out, and there were tons of people with Starbucks drinks ...

I agree, they could put something in the dailies would be nice, but I don't think they have to do a press release/announcement.

Easy solution is to just bring a refillable glass with a built in straw (think the glasses they sell at Starbucks) and have them put your drink (or do it yourself) in the container.

Yea, I don’t get why Starbucks doesn’t have to abide by the straw ban.

Just got off the Escape on Sunday. We received straws with all of our frozen drinks. Maybe they were trying to use up their supply? I’m not sure why the inside bars gave us those drinks in disposable plastic cups though. Seems like that would be just as an environmental concern as the straws.

Thanks for the suggestion. So sorry it bothers you but I'll bring my own box of straws. You'll get over it.

Guess what?

I ordered a Bushwhacker just now and got a straw without asking.

I remarked, "Oh, we get straws again!"

The bartender shook his head and said, "Don't ask me. It changes every two days!"

I'll keep the hundred plastic straws that I bought in port today for 100yen in my cabin as backup.

If they stop giving them out again maybe you can sell your stash quietly in a dark corner of the casino on the black market.
