Just back 5/22 Sailing

Recommended Posts

We just got back from the 5/22 sailing - We did just the 2 nighter

The arrival to the port went smoothly - We arrived paid our $38 for valet parking

Brought our bags to the porters - We gave them $4 for taking our bags ($2 per bag)

The line to check in was very decent and we were with an agent within a few minutes - The longest part was filling out the credit card authorization form - They checked our passports, took our pictures, and printed out or sail cards

The next line was them offering us the dinner times and trying to upsell the admirality special restaurant - We took a 6 pm sit down

The next line was trying to sell us excursions which we skipped over

The next line is the drink line - We already were given free 10 coupons for drinks (more about that later) - So we decided to get the 10 pack of regular drink coupons so I could have some soda - $69.95 for 10 alcoholic drinks and $30 for 10 non alcoholic drinks - Next time we won't get the small drink package for soda because the soda's are only $2.50 so unless you use it for other things like the big bottles of water or specialty coffee or milkshakes then it is not worth it - We did not use all of them so I saved them for when we get on the ship again in July

Next it was time for us to get on the ship - we went in to guest services first no wait to find out where we go to get our free drink coupons and found out we had to go to the bar by the casino to pick them up - So about this they had a promotion that you get the 10 free drink package when you make your booking - These coupons were actually only good for up to $12 value so if your drink cost more than that you simply paid the difference - Plus with these coupons they add 18% gratutity so the drink my husband got the most was a martini and so that was 12.99 so he paid .99 plus 18% gratutity turned out to be like 3 and some change for each drink with the coupon - So basically if you have to buy the package your saving about $5 a drink for the martini's that is

We went upstairs to grab some lunch - I was particularly impressed with the grills portion of the buffet as their hamburgers were actually really decent - During the times that we saw staff eating they were always eating the burgers so you know if the staff are all eating them then they must be one of the best things there - the fresh fruit was also really good - and i also got some fries which was pretty good

We played some cards until the rooms were ready and then went to our room - Lovely little room with King Size bed and also had 2 pull down beds which we did not use - The room was clean and our stewart Siti was amazingly sweet - Decided to take a nap so we slept til 4:45

Muster location was in the stellar restaurant which was nice not to be stuffed outside like sardines - Muster took about 20 minutes and we were on our way to have some fun - Our favorite place to go was the Commodore Lounge AKA Martini Bar - We loved little Michelle in there and would often go there to just sit and listen to music and play card games - We enjoyed talking to Jared whom was the piano player the only thing we did not like was that the times said Sing along with Jared so we assumed he would be singing well that simply was not the case he only played no singing so it was not as fun as traditional piano bar but it was still nice

We went to dinner in the stellar cafe - Sadly I am an extremely picky person so their standard menu was not to my liking luckily they offer a New York Strip from the Admiral restaurant which I decided to partake in - Other than it needing a little salt it was very good and worth the price of $18 - The desert that evening was kinda like a chocolate mouse type thing and it was extremely bland and did not taste good

We played Name that Tune after dinner which was Jared humming songs as he played the piano which was quite fun - the winner gets a free Bahama Mama - I stayed a bit longer to listen to Jared play music afterwards then decided to head to bed

Went back to the room which was made up by our stewart Siti - Got into jammies and turned a movie on my ipad on to watch

The room was very cold which is great because that is just how I like it

Next morning we got up at 715 - got dressed and went up to the buffet to eat breakfast they had eggs, boiled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash, waffles, pancakes, french toast, cereal, fresh fruit, yogurt, etc. The traditional staples they also had an omelete station going - I got the scrambled eggs, the bacon which surprisingly was crispy normally on cruises they aren't crispy, and I got a couple of small waffles - Everything I ate was super yummy

After that we decided to get off the ship in Freeport - We took a taxi ride $10 roundtrip to Lucaya Beach area when they drop you off they give you a ticket to bring back to the taxi stand to get a ride back - We of course explored the marketplace and every single stand was here pretty lady come in and look inside - I actually inquired about a few things I was looking $25 for a coffee mug are you kidding me $25 for a tote bag - So I ended up just not getting anything from them because they were over charging and normally I play the haggle game but they started far to high so I did not want to play the haggle game - Then we went over to big daddy's yellow hut - If you are by the marketplace look behind them and you will see a bunch of buildings walk through the buildings and you will see water and there is a little yellow hut and this guy sells the best conch on the island so hubby got himself some fried conch and conch salad - Also stopped in a little store and got some Pepsi since the ship only sells Coke (did not buy it to bring on the ship just got a 20 oz) - After that we walked back over to the taxi stand and took a ride back to the port where we decided to explore that a bit (Be careful when riding back if you want to avoid a long walk because if they drop you off at the port where the marketplace and senor frogs are then it's a long walk to get to the ship so if you don't wanna walk it tell them to drop you off at the grand celebration ship) Anyways we walked around their marketplace found the same bag and the lady sold it to me for $13 and got a coffee mug for $5 and found a bracelet for $5 - So for less than I was going to spend on one item I got all 3 items I was looking for - After this we proceeded to take our long walk back to the ship

Once we got back on the ship we decided to take a mini nap to cool off before making our way to get some Smokehouse BBQ - The BBQ is by far the best thing the ship offers in my opinion - The brisket is to die for - You will find the Smokehouse BBQ outside by the AFT pool

We decided to go play the Price is Right they had already gone thru about 8 of the items when we arrived and they were nice enough to go thru those items again real quick for us - Hubby ended up winning and got a small Grand Celebration tote bag along with a pen and a bottle opener keychain

After this we played Friendly Feud which is just like family feud - Our team lost but we still ended up with a consolation prize of a bottle opener keychain - the winners ended up with a plastic waterproof case to put stuff in

After this we went and played What's in the bag - this was fun and mad we were looking for sun screen i literally ran all the way thru the buffet area to the front of the ship to find someone with suntan lotion - by the time I got back they had already moved on and done like 3 other items - I did not feel like I was gone that long but I guess I was anyways the game guy was so impressed by my dedication to run to the other side of the ship to get the sunscreen he let me back in the game - I got out in 3rd place but it was still fun

By this time I was hot and sweaty from running around so we went back to the room to relax until dinner and get cooled off then went down for dinner at Stellar's requested the same table as we like 2 of the tablemates we had and we loved our waitress - Thank God the other two table mates did not make it in time to sit at our table this night as the 4 of us were in agreement that we could not stand this lady (Long story short she was supposedly a social worker but talked down about everyone especially those needing help and basically called all the people working on the ship to support their families scammers because they were away from their family) - Anyways again I am picky so ordered a New York Strip again - for desert I tried another chocolate cake and it was better than what we were given the first night but still not that great - Our waiter ended up surprising us by bringing us 2 slices of cheese cake which was really good and tasted even better with the strawberry sauce they put on it - one of our table mates ended up chowing down on it

After dinner we went to see the Tina Turner show with Michelle Marshal - Let me tell you this is by far the best show she was simply amazing - I told her I would find her on Facebook as she is a vegas act turns out she also does Oprah impersonations

We also saw the couple doing the sax and singing which was also amazing - Plus some more piano playing and Name that Tune with Jared

After this I went back to the room to relax and watch another movie on the ipad - Ended up ordering 2 sandwiches and a cheese plate for the hubby and me around 10 - Only took about 10 minutes for it to arrive but I was not happy as I asked for no lettuce so I just ended up eating the chips on my plate there is a $3 fee to order room service - they have like 3 or 4 items you can order for free and then a bunch of items you can purchase - the $3 fee is no matter which items you order or how many items you order

Around 12 I decided to mozy on up to the buffet to see what they considered snacks - they had some dessert and meatballs, leg of lamb, pizza, and a few other misc things - I chose 2 slices of pep pizza and I was pleasantly surprised and it was pretty decent to eat

The next morning we got up around 715 again and quickly repacked our bags most were already packed since we basically lived out of the suitcase since it was just a 2 day trip - went down to the buffet for breakfast again and then back up to the room to get our bags so we could self disembark between 730 and 830 if you are willing to carry your own luggage off they will let you walk off yourself otherwise they have you wait in public areas for disembarking last disembark time is 1030 - You have to be out of your room by 830

The one thing about the rooms I did not like was the gray plastic keycard I am used to my sail card being my room key but on here that is not the case they give you 2 gray cards for your room door - be careful not lose them and be sure to put them in the key slot by the mirror when leaving the ship for good otherwise if they get lost your hit with $20 fee for each key missing

Customs was not so bad we got about 1/2 way thru the line and they only had 1 custom then finally 2 more showed up and the lines started moving much faster - All together we spent about 30 minutes in customs and leaving the airport - Once outside I gave the valet our ticket and our car was brought around in less than 10 minutes

On the ship they did announce that they had a special to book another oceanview room for $129 per person - But we already had our next trip on this ship planned so we did not partake in it but it's a good deal

All in all I had a good time granted it's not a bigger cruise line but it was fun and I like that it can be done in 2 nights so I can leave on a Friday and be back by Sunday

bnorris, a great trip report. You did quite a bit for a short cruise. I have a lot of things going on so I won't be sailing for a while. I will be on the Carnival Breeze for New Year's Eve cruise. Thanks again.

That was a great review!

I love the play-by-play :)

And you just gave me some good information - as a bonus I've got drink coupons coming, but I was told to go to guest services. Now I'll be ready that if they aren't at guest services, I'll need to go to the casino bar...

Yah I was told to go to guest services but when i got there they told me casino bar

Great Review!

your experience mirrors our trip last month. That is some good cruise ship pizza! I am hoping out trip on the Classica next week is just as good.

yah normally i don't like cruise ship pizza so this was great

I am kinda waiting to go on the classica because like with the celebration i am afraid of growing pains LOL - my first time on celebration was 2 years ago and although it was a nice little get away I did not have as much fun on it as I did this time

Be sure to do a good review when you get back I would love to hear your opinion on it to see if it's worth booking a groupon for it

Thanks for the review. I have one question, in Freeport can you go to the Senor Frogs at the Carnival dock? I have heard the it is fenced off so the Grand Celebration passengers cannot go to the Carnival dock.

Yes you can get there but it is a bit of a walk - My taxi driver accidently dropped us off to where carnival docks and we were not paying attention so we just hopped off and then when we realized there was this huge fence blocking us from getting to the boat we had to ask someone how to get on the boat and basically it is just a long walk around the fence - So yes you can do it but expect about a 10 minute walk to get there - When you get off the ship just ask any of the taxi drivers or port workers which way to go to walk around to Senor Frogs

No free pizza or ice cream on Classic . You have to pay at pizza restaurant and ice cream parlor . There was an ice cream machine near buffet but wasn't hooked up . I was told they needed a 110 volt plug and only 220 volt in that area .

okay my friend had posted on my facebook page that she would never cruise again with them and said they wanted to charge for pizza and you confirmed what i was thinking that she was on classica ... So then I was planning on trying classic out but I think I will just stick withe my free pizza and ice cream on celebration

I have been on two MSC ships and am willing to pay extra for Gelato & Pizza; if it is outstanding. MSC's were, so I am happy to do so. Now I won't pay extra on Royal or NCL, as their quality just is not there.

For me really it's a toss up - Since I have had it for free I know it is good - But the fact is there is so much food on a cruise ship to begin with I really hate paying extra for food - But then again I was having to pay extra for dinner because I am so picky so I could avoid that by going to get the free pizza for dinner but then that takes away from the dining experience because I love having dinner in the MDR

So I guess on this ship if I really wanted pizza and I could buy it by the slice and it was not to expensive maybe like $2 a slice or less then I might would purchase it on this ship

The walk from the Grand celebration is now about a 5-10 min walk depending how fast you wald. But yes you can go to the Senior Frog and that area easily. You can cut through two parking fenced areas which are open at each end. Not that bad a walk at all. The used to dock at the other pier right there. Not now. Carnival and all the others do dock at the Senior frog location.

Why do the port authorities make it difficult at all with the fencing? I suppose security concerns, but the owners of Senor Frog's and the other site (whose name escapes me) like Senor Frog's cannot be very happy with this set-up.

If it was not for the taxi driver dropping us off to the wrong location I would not even realized that we were that close to Senor Frogs - Quite honestly we thought we were on a different part of the island as you don't see any of that stuff from the ship and if you hop a taxi you never see it either

Was Senor Frog actually open? on our Celebration trip in April, almost everything in the "carnival port area" was closed. We were told they only open all those things when a Carnival ship is there. Seems dumb to me to have a nice port area with a ship there every day and not use it.

Yes it was open but a Carnival ship was there

If Senor Frog's not open, what's the point of going to Freeport or even getting off the ship?

I need to remember this and time my Grand Classica visit when a Carnival vessel is at dock as well.

Umm last I checked a majority of the people don't go to Freeport simply to go to Senor Frog's

I could care less if Senor Frogs is open

I like to take the taxi to Lucaya and there is a little yellow stand hut behind all the buildings next to the water that my hubby swears is the best conch he has ever gotten so we like to go there and he gets his fresh conch salad and fried conch and I enjoy sitting by one of the tables and people watching or just looking out at the water - Sometimes we like to walk over to the beach area behind the police station

bnorris 10,

To each his own. I know many love the Lucaya area and I am glad that they enjoy the area. During my last visit to Freeport on Carnival Pride, I had an absolutely pleasant time spending my time in that area near the ship's dock. Live music at the gazebo and shop employees in the area who were welcoming and helpful in my search for what I was wanting, and, then, capped by my Senor Frog's experience!

That's my thinking!

Well the way you made it sound was that if senor frog was not open it was pointless to get off the boat

If the shops are not open and there is no entertainment at the gazebo and Senor Frog's as well as the other watering hole is not open, for me, and your experience may differ, I'll stay on the ship.

I get ya glad you clarified as originally you simply said if Senor Frogs was not open you were not getting off the ship
